Mikey Gets Email

Mikey Weinstein forwards me a lot of the hate mail he receives and they vary in their levels of stupidity, malevolence, bigotry and ignorance. But this one is almost impressive in the Sarah Palin-like stringing together of buzzwords, slurs and insults it contains.

You stinking kike commie athiest liberal dick sucking Obummer loving Jesus hating faggot lawyer. Who worships satan queers and abortions and muslum sand niggers like Obummer more than your own country. TRAITOR JEW!

Needs more random capitalization though. And more cowbell. I’ve mentioned many times that I suffer from hate mail envy. I don’t get nearly as much hate mail as I think I deserve, especially compared to Mikey, PZ and the folks at American Atheists. But I think it’s obvious that the way to garner the attention of the truly deranged is to be Jewish, whether actively religious or not. I know there are lots of people who were “born Jewish” under Jewish tradition and are atheists but still identify as Jewish (Silverman is not one of them), but it is possible to actually convert to Judaism while being an atheist?

    Can you dig it?

but it is possible to actually convert to Judaism while being an atheist?

Assuming you meant “is it,” the answer is (as with almost anything Jewish) “that depends.” The Orthodox would say no (big surprise.) On the other hand, I know several couples where one or the other, in pursuit of matrimony, became a Reform MOTT [1] despite being a nonbeliever.

The thing is, though — how are you about latkes and gefilte fish?

is it possible to actually convert to Judaism while being an atheist?

Well the Scoiety for Humanistic Judaism appears to be non theistic and says “A Jew is someone who identifies with the history, culture and future of the Jewish people” rather than using an ethnic or religious definition. So yes it looks like you could.

Geeze you really want us to dig deep don’t you? Do I have to do it here, or do you want me to send it to you via your email address? Would you prefer ‘kike’ or ‘atheist scumbag’, or what?

Enquiring minds and all that ….

Traitor Jew’s! I love that place! They’ve got the best little sandwich cookies, and I really appreciate that they give their employees fair wages and good benefits…wait, what are we talking about again?

I am quite fortunate that I have never had to eat gefilte.

    Not once.

It seems remarkable stated that way, but I think the smell has been enough to give me the moral courage to resist despite peer pressure.

Latkes, however, I have consumed with relish – a pickled pepper, onion, and garlic relish that was good, if vinegary.

I see a win/win in the making. Pick-up the banner promoting the U.S. granting Mississippi to all Jewish-Americans for consideration of US$1.00. Part of the deal is you’re considered an honorary Jew while the bigots go nuts given the publicity of working towards this most attractive conveyance.

If the state of Israel is interested and will move their government and Jewish population here, then I recommend throwing South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama in the deal. Concede them statehood; I recommend they call it Israel X.0. I’m not sure what iteration they’re on now but it’s sure greater than 2.0.

No, Southern California is a better choice. We can move all the Orange County residents to temporary camps in Palm Springs. Or simply evacuate L.A. Might be one way of getting a less corrupt L.A.P.D.

Don’t feel bad. I have hate mail envy too. I used to get the most hilarious epic screeds from antivaccinationists. Now, these days all I seem able to manage is the occasional Tweet from Eric Merola (producer of all the propaganda films on Stanislaw Burzynski) saying that I should put gun in my mouth or referring to me as satanic, then deleting the Tweets a few hours later, presumably after he sobered up. Sadly for him, the Internet remembers all.

  • rbh3

You gotta wonder if these dimbulbs know that Jesus was a Jew.

  • http://www.respectfulinsolence.net Orac

I do, however, get antivaccinationists harassing me at work, and cancer quackery supporters submitting formal complaints about me to my state medical board, the latter of which generated a letter saying they had investigated and found no violations. No doubt the “investigation” was to click on the links presented as “evidence” of my malfeasance and laughing that anyone could be so clueless.

  • Artor

    @rbh3

Duh, don’t you know that Jesus renounced his Jewish faith and converted to Evangelical Him-ianity right after he was crucified? Pat Robertson was the one that converted him, since he was the only other Xian around back then.

@5, I too love shopping at “Traitor Jews!” The ironic part is they’re a spin off of a German supermarket chain. Cheap wine and giant blocks of chocolate for everyone!

    I give up, who?

BTW: how long would a Star of David or a religious symbol from any other religion last at Shaw Air Force Base?

  • Matt G

That screed needs to be put to R&B and made into a music video.

I hate the lack of punctuation. I don’t know if he means, “Satan, queers and abortion” or “Satan queers and abortions”. Those “Satan queers” are some badass mofo’s.

    > but it is possible to actually convert to Judaism while being an atheist?

That depends. Basically, to convert to Judaism, you have to study & convert with a rabbi, and which Jews will recognize that conversion depends on how reliable they think your rabbi is. So, as a general rule, Orthodox will only accept Orthodox conversions (and stricter Orthodox might not recognize more modern Orthodox conversion), Conservative will recognize Conservative conversions, most Orthodox conversions, and Reform conversions done within certain guidelines, and Reform pretty much accepts anybody’s conversion. So, the question really is “can you get a rabbinical court to sign off on a conversion while being an atheist?”

That’s not as straightforward a question as you might think. You’d certainly have to participate in some sort of organized Jewish ritual, which most atheists might object to. No Orthodox or Conservative authority would accept as valid a conversion of somebody who didn’t believe in G-d. Reform conversions, on the other hand, don’t really have any hard and fast rules — technically, men don’t even have to be circumcised to convert (though most rabbis would require it). Given a liberal enough rabbi and beit din, it might be possible to convert to Reform Judaism as an atheist, though I think the Reform movement as a whole would frown on it. However, there’s another alternative.

Reconstructionist Judaism isn’t technically atheistic, but they’re certainly less comfortable with traditional theism than any of the other denominations. Think of them as kind of like Unitarians, but Jewish. I don’t know that much about them, but I’m pretty positive one could convert to Reconstructionist Judaism without belief in a literal G-d. Of course, your conversion probably wouldn’t be recognized outside the Reconstructionist movement, though you might still be able to emigrate to Israel under the Law of Return. Of course, you’d probably be committing to performing a lot of (humanized) ritual, accepting a lot of (humanized) tradition, and (if you’re a man) getting circumcised, so I’m not sure most atheists would really want to take that path.

(And, yes, I know it was a joke, but I just found the question kind of fascinating.)

There’s a whole branch of Judaism that you’d fit into Ed. Rabbi Wine started the Humanist branch here in Michigan. I’d belong if it was so expensive! That’s the thing about being Jewish. They don’t pass around a collection plate every week. You pay up front to belong to the synagogue. I do consider myself to be a Humanist though. Culturally Jewish, because that’s how I grew up, and spiritually Humanist.

A Jewish athiest? You’d be in very good company – Baruch / Benedict Spinoza, Isaac Asimov and Stephen Fry to name just three of plenty, plenty more :

Without asking for TMI, I’m willing to bet that Ed was circumcised as a baby at the hospital when he was born – almost all USian men around that age were – so that’s one requirement he doesn’t have to worry about.
