John Oliver is leaving the Daily Show for his own weekly show on HBO and Jon Stewart surprised him with a very cool goodbye on his last show. It’s very funny and very touching to watch.

I always thought he was going to take over for John Stewart when he leaves. In some respects I thought he was better than Stewart during Stewart’s hiatus and filmed some of the best bits as a correspondent. I think the show is going to miss him more than he misses the show.
John Oliver had this to say about the new venture.
I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now. I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at The Daily Show for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.

I’m sure that’s still an option. Anchoring The Daily Show is probably one of the best gigs there is for a comedian like John Oliver, and if he can take the daily grind, he’d undoubtedly jump at the chance if it was offered to him.

My only criticism of him during the hiatus was that he tried too hard to be similar to Jon Stewart. He adopted many of the same “bits” tics and mannerisms as Stewart when he was in the chair. From a continuity POV, I guess that was a fair enough decision, but I think it limited him somewhat.
Yeah, I picked up on that as well but I think that their styles are very similar, if you watch Oliver’s standup I don’t think he deviated from his identity too much at all. It is going to be interesting to watch the new show to see how he develops away from the Daily Show. Being on HBO they will be able to be a lot edgier and it looks like the main writer for the Daily Show is following him.
I’m going to second kantalope’s recommendation. It’s one of the funniest podcasts out there.
