Doug Stanhope on Rebecca Vitsmun

Doug Stanhope, for my money the funniest comic working today, has a Youtube video explaining why he launched a fundraiser for Rebecca Vitsmun and raised more than $125,000 to get her and her family a new house. He says he did it just to piss off the Christians.

I’m not normally a person who is concerned about fashion, but OMG – was that guy drunk when he got dressed? And that is the ugliest chair that I’ve seen in a while!

    That. Was. Awesome.

And his attire just added to the awesomeness.

“It’s funny how hate can make you do real nice things every now and then”

    Well played sir, well played

This is part of Charlie Brookers Wipe 2013, a satirical year in review program from the UK.

    (Charlie is the voice over)

Doug features often in Charlies ‘wipe’ programs whenever a US view is needed.

I knew Rebecca when she was a teenager. I gather from her Facebook posts and things she’s said in interviews that she’s not interested in pissing off Christians.

I find Stanhope fascinating. I think he’s the most insightful comic in the business, even though he doesn’t always make me laugh. But yeah–proves the point that atheists are really generous in times of need.

    Not . . . even . . . close. A data point of one here “proves” nothing.

I think the point, Michael, is that many atheists contributed to the fund. Not that one person did.

Satire notwithstanding, this video has turned good publicity for atheists into bad publicity — really bad publicity.

And I for one think that any charity should be based primarily on human needs and not how well the beliefs of the people involved match with our own.

Glad Rebecca Vitsmun got a check for $125,000. As for Doug Stanhope… I am a fan of dark humor. This is a blackhole.

    Excellent message.

So much of our language is total bullshit when it comes to how we do things. Like the words “spreading hate”. We don’t spread hate, we do specific things under the direction of hate. Technically Mr. Stanhope is spreading hate here.

Hate is a totally natural thing and much like organized sports and violence, the best solutions for what to do with things like hate will be in finding ways to channel our emotions.

Wow, do you think it’ll piss them off enough that they go back to trying to kill us? Again?

    Your deep concern is noted.

“One” event and one that’s motivated partly by antipathy. A rallying cry certainly, an illustration of how to act, sure. But again, this “proves” nothing, this singular effort provides no compelling evidence in regards to atheists as a group.

In addition supporters of science need to gag whenever anyone incorrectly uses the term, “proves”. Let’s not destroy our key advantage, critical thinking.
