You gotta hand it to Ted Cruz, he’s persistent. As the Senate considered passage of the omnibus budget appropriations bill (it passed easily, 72-26), he tried once again to defund Obamacare through an amendment to the bill. Amusingly, he tried to do it through unanimous consent, which means a single objection kills the amendment. That’s exactly what happened, of course.
As the Senate prepared to vote on a $1.1 trillion spending bill, Cruz named the omnibus his latest victim, presenting two amendments to the budget bill to defund Obamacare shortly before the Senate voted to invoke cloture.
Without hesitation, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) objected to both of his amendments.
“The majority leader and Senate Democrats have chosen not to listen to the American people,” Cruz said, yielding the floor.
Now that’s just funny. Like all wingnuts, he’s convinced, or at least claims, that the American people are on their side. So let’s take a look at a few of issues where Cruz’ position is diametrically opposed to public opinion. Nearly 2/3 of voters think we should raise taxes on the wealthy, which Cruz opposes and thinks is “communist.” By about a 55-40 margin, Americans support same-sex marriage. By about a 60-40 margin, Americans support the deal negotiated with Iran. By about a 60-40 margin, Americans support legalizing marijuana. Why has Cruz “chosen not to listen to the American people”? Because he doesn’t really give a damn about public opinion, he only gives a damn about his own agenda. And that’s fine with me, actually. I’m okay with that. What I’m not okay with is invoking public opinion as the only thing that matters while flagrantly ignoring it when you feel like it. That makes you a hypocrite.
