The Blissful Ignorance of Glenn Beck

In a statement so blatantly ridiculous that it should have left every one of his listeners shaking their heads in disbelief, Glenn Beck told his radio audience, “I don’t know anybody who is anti-gay, at least not any of my friends.” Bear in mind that he wore a baseball cap all last week to honor Ken Hutcherson, who was both virulently and violently bigoted. Right Wing Watch points out the obvious:

We have no idea what Beck’s definition of “anti-gay” must be if it doesn’t apply to the people that he surrounds himself with since, as we pointed out last week, his good friend Ken Hutcherson was probably best known for being a vehemently anti-gay activist who once called for a ban the promotion of homosexuality.

And let’s not forget that Rabbi Daniel Lapin, whom has appeared on Beck’s show numerous times, has said that “barbarism has sex in the canal through which dead, useless, waste material is excreted” and declared that people with AIDS should have been rounded-up and quarantined during the early days of the AIDS crisis.

And what about Beck’s good friend David Barton, who has said that gay sex should be regulated by the government and asserted that it is a sign that a nation is going through a spiritual revival when it stops tolerating homosexuality. Barton has predicted that gay marriage will lead to people marrying dogs and horses and said that it doesn’t matter what the Supreme Court rules, homosexuality ought to always remain illegal. Repeatedly declaring that homosexuality is “an aberration” that “violates the laws of nature,” Barton has also proclaimed it to be “reprehensible” and “disgusting” and stated that science will never find a cure for AIDS because the disease is God’s punishment for those who engage in “shameful sexual acts.”

Barton also has close ties to rabidly anti-gay activist Scott Lively and even spoke at a fundraiser for Lively’s group. Lively, of course, has been instrumental in spreading the Religious Right’s anti-gay animus all over the world and took partial credit for the crackdown in Russia, declaring it to be “one of the proudest achievements of my career.”

Indeed, Beck has been publicly opposing the anti-gay law in Russia as totalitarian — a law that virtually every one of his Christian right buddies has publicly supported and praised. Is he lying? Or is he actually that delusional?

I seem to recall that Beck, on an appearance on Billo the clown’s show several years ago declared that same sex marriage was no big deal.

In Beck’s little world, you are anti-gay only if you are the one actually wielding the baseball bat.

That’s not antigay. Antigay is if you torture and then shoot them.

I’m sure there are extenuating circumstances that you don’t know about.

Here you go: Cenk Uygur replays the clip.

He didn’t so much say it’s no big deal, as, “We have bigger fish to fry: the country’s burning down.”

Although you could make allowances that if a right winger wants to support marriage equality without losing his place in the right-winger community, this sort of tepid support is exactly what you’d expect. He deserves at least a little credit for replying to billo, “What, the gays are gonna ‘get us’?” He also makes good use of the Jefferson quote, “if it ‘neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg,’ then it’s none of my business.”

Naturally the subject changed to abortion, so Beck could take two steps back for his one step forward.

Waste canal? Has this clown not heard of urine?

Do not use inaccurate words to describe Glenn Beck. His is not blissful.

Apparently I was dis remembering who said it. After further cogitation, I think it was Ann Coulter, although not on Billo the clown’s show.

Beck means anti-gay as in anti-happy.

If a gay person confesses that they’re very sorry they’re gay and would give anything to change their horrible situation and stop their behavior … and you refuse to give them your support and/or sympathy … then THAT is “anti-gay.”

Because that one knows its place.

I’m going with delusional. I know, I know, we’ve put a ban here on using “crazy” to describe wingnuts who don’t actually have mental illness, but I maintain that Glenn Beck genuinely has something wrong in his head. It’s why I’ve never felt entirely comfortable laughing at his antics lately. I get the impression that he needs professional help and he’s not getting any, or at least not getting the right kind.

Am I being overly sensitive to the well-being of a man dedicated to polluting public opinion with his crackpot theories? Perhaps. And even if he does have some kind of disorder, it’s not severe enough that it’s kept him for carving out a reasonably profitable niche for himself, so maybe I shouldn’t feel too sorry for him.

… David Barton, who has said that gay sex should be regulated by the government …

From what I know of the history of government regulation (not much but prob’ly much more than Barton), every agency dedicated to regulating an activity (the Bureau of Mines, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Agriculture, Securities & Exchange Commission, etc, etc) ends up as a consistent promoter of that activity.

Should Barton ever take enough brain stimulants to reach the level of coherency, somebody might have fun bringing this up to him.

David Barton is too easy of a target and I’m not sure he’s even a real person. At the very least he’s unsubstantiated. I would like to call out Rabbi Daniel Lapin’s ignorance in his quote “barbarism has sex in the canal through which dead, useless, waste material is excreted”. Not only is poop not dead, but teeming with bacterial life, it truly takes a lay person to believe that human or any other type of excrement is useless or a “waste” at all. Take this podcast from RadioLab about the NYC sewer system and Manhattan’s infamous “Poop Train”. Really informative. http://www.radiolab.org/story/poop-train/

I’ve never had oral sex with him, but I guess if he’s willing to go down on me, what the hell…

I agree. There is something genuinely wrong in that man’s head.
