Schlafly: People Moving Away From Marriage Equality States

Phyllis Schlafly engaged in her favorite pastime on her radio show recently, making completely unsupported assertions without any evidence whatsoever. Specifically, she claimed that many people are moving away from states that have marriage equality to get away from those awful gay people.

The Court held that because the U.S. Supreme Court had recently ordered that federal benefits be granted to same-sex couples who are married under state law, the civil union law in New Jersey was inadequate to ensure that homosexual couples in New Jersey are able to receive the same benefits as married couples.

There was no dissent from the New Jersey Court’s ruling, not even by Christie’s own judicial appointments. But many Americans are dissenting with their feet, by moving away from same-sex marriage states and into the many states that continue to recognize the value of marriage as being between only one man and one woman.

I’d ask for evidence, but this is Phyllis Schlafly we’re talking about. Probably the holy spirit told her or something.

Should be easy enough to validate with the 2020 census. The problem is, by then , where will bigots be able to move to? I predict huge population growth in Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas.

Just look at the population of Wyoming. It’s sky rocketing I tell you. It almost has as many people as 1/3 the island of Manhattan.

Kinda interesting, New Jersey is reportedly the state with the highest ratio of people moving out.

  • marcus

Wow, those people are going to be seriously screwed when marriage equality becomes the law of the land. Well, I guess they can always move to Iran…or Nigeria.

Hey dumbasses, don’t let the screen door hit you on the ass…

And when the fundies concentrate in the red states we can watch the resulting fireworks.

    cswella,

Your cite is not representative of actual migration rates – contra Forbes’ claim, but instead reports what United Van Lines experiences. They typically have corporate relocations as their client base; so their customers are not representative of the total population migrating. E.g., the biggest demographic moving out of Michigan are young adults: http://www.michigan.gov/cgi/0,4548,7-158-54534-140915–,00.html (then click on the charts showing migration rates by age).

Michael – did you see the presentation on the MI ‘brain drain’? That’s a worry.

It’s even worse than she says. The Gays are actively removing Traditional Americans from the homostates. Seriously, The Gays arrive in the dead of night, load you and your Traditional Family on to one of their floats and transport you to the border!

    I wish they would.

California has 38 million people, the bay area has 6 million. IMO, it’s way too many.

Now with our record drought, water is going to be very scarce and the whole state is likely to light up in fires this summer.

  • colnago80

    Re raven @ #9

A lot of Californians are migrating to Nevada, another state with a water shortage problem.

  • teawithbertrand

I am currently living in the state that was the very first to recognize marriage equality, and I know about a dozen assholes who would be doing me a great personal favor if they moved away. The farther, the better.

  • freemage

Even if we stick to the Forbes list, there’s 6 states with Marriage Equality (most of which, it’s worth noting, only got it this past year as a result of judicial action). 3 states have no recognition (or have explicitly anti-SSM laws/amendments). The last is Wisconsin, which allows for legal unions but not ‘marriage’. So, even there, her claim is weaksauce at best.

It is Phyllis Schlafly after all. She is of course preaching hot buttons to the sheep. When she spouts bilge like this just ask her about her Gay son.

  • John Pieret

Americans are dissenting with their feet, by moving away from same-sex marriage states and into the many states that continue to recognize the value of marriage as being between only one man and one woman.

Coming from a state where SSM is legal, is geting rid of the least educated and most hate filled people supposed to be a bad thing?

  • Synfandel

Specifically, she claimed that many people are moving away from states that have marriage equality to get away from those awful gay people.

Does Phyllis Schlafly think that gay people suddenly materialized out of thin air when their marriages were legalized or that straight people spontaneously transformed en masse into gay people when the law was passed? Does she think that there are any fewer gay people in states that don’t yet recognize gay marriages?

Earth to Schlafly: They’re here. They’re all around you. They’ve always been here and they they won’t cease to exist just because they’re mistreated.

  • felidae

Ms. Schlafly, please make America more beautiful and civil: put on a burka and shut the fuck up

    @marcus :

Wow, those people are going to be seriously screwed when marriage equality becomes the law of the land. Well, I guess they can always move to Iran…or Nigeria.

Actually I’d say Uganda and Russia suit them best presently – although hopefully that’ll change one day sooner the better.

Nah, don’t warn ’em a little bit of slapstick comedy never hurt anyone!

Well, okay never, oh alright, would you believe rarely) killed anyone?
