Dumbass Quote of the Day

From David Barton:

“This is one of the things that liberals have done to us in recent years is make us think that everybody is inherently good and therefore if an accident happens with guns, it can’t be the individual’s fault who walked into the theater and shot everybody, it’s got to be the gun’s fault because people are inherently good.”

He’s got it wrong. Guns don’t kill people. Bullets don’t even kill people. Tissue damage and blood loss kill people.

  • chisaihana5219

So if I get drunk and run over someone, it’s not my fault, it’s the Car’s fault?

  • sc_72717b0d8dc4053e632b6512091cef73

That is indeed the stupidest comment that I have ever seen, even for David Barton. Its more the opposite: its the gun people who keep telling us that we need more guns, because most people are good, therefore more guns = more good guys with guns.

…and therefore if an accident happens with guns, it can’t be the individual’s fault who walked into the theater and shot everybody…

    Not. An. Accident.

  • Mr Ed

Just to clarify Dave, Herbie the Love Bug isn’t a documentary. Inanimate objects like guns and VW bugs don’t act on their own.

  • Chiroptera

Huh. That sounds like the old conservative meme: Liberals want to let all the murderers and rapists out of prison but want to take away all our guns so we can’t defend ourselves.

Still pretty stupid, but not a band new stupid.

  • moarscienceplz

Some dude with a John Wayne complex carries a loaded gun into a movie theater, gets in to an argument with someone who throws popcorn at him, so he then pulls out his loaded gun and kills the popcorn thrower, and David Barton thinks this can be classified as an “argument”?

He seems to need some remedial English classes as well as training in basic logic.

  • moarscienceplz

    Sorry. “accident” not “argument”.

  • teawithbertrand

I don’t think anyone is “inherently” anything. I do, however, think that fewer assholes walking around with fewer guns would be good.

  • eric

Sure it’s the person’s fault. But without the gun, this hypothetical person would not have killed everybody in a theater. Liberal attitudes towards guns are not about changing who’s to blame, its about noting that guns make killing faster and easier. That is why we hand guns out to our soldiers; because they do, in fact, make it easier and faster for one person to kill many others. If they didn’t, we wouldn bother equipping our soldiers with them.

  • cswella

Who’s the liberal that’s been telling everyone that David Barton is inherently good?

  • Jackie, all dressed in black

How is a man gunning down a crowd an accident? How exactly was he going to go on a killing spree without a gun? The mind, she boggles.

  • Sastra

It doesn’t sound to me like a conservative meme per se. It sounds like a very popular Christian meme.

If you aren’t a Christian, then you don’t believe in “sin.” If you don’t believe in sin then that means that you must believe that all people are inherently good. They don’t need forgiveness. They don’t need rescuing. They don’t need God’s help to become better. They’re already perfect, according to the nonChristian.

This is the argument where they try to show that only Christianity can account for sin — and therefore only Christianity has the remedy for it. Everything else must involve some weird thinking where humans are nature’s version of God, pure and sinless when born and corrupted only by any attempt to discipline them.

  • tbp1

Is he even trying to be coherent? Did he ever, for that matter?

  • alanb

@Jackie: How exactly was he going to go on a killing spree without a gun?

He will walk into the movie theater with a baseball bat, and if the theater is full of liberals they will be so certain of his basic goodness that they will stand there while he beats their heads in.

  • billgascoyne

Apparently, Barton’s view is that one must believe either that people are inherently good or that people are inherently bad. Black and white, no shades of gray allowed.

  • http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User:Modusoperandi Modusoperandi

alanb “He will walk into the movie theater with a baseball bat, and if the theater is full of liberals they will be so certain of his basic goodness that they will stand there while he beats their heads in.”

To be fair, the liberals would first shame him because it wasn’t a Fair Trade baseball bat made from recycled or sustainable lumber.

  • tfkreference

To quote a little known song on a mostly forgettable album by Queen, “People get shot by people, people with guns.”

  • alanb

@Modusoperandi: To be fair, the liberals would first shame him because it wasn’t a Fair Trade baseball bat made from recycled or sustainable lumber.

Only if he’s a white male. All others will be excused as victims of the patriarchy.

One of the most brilliant things that the Welcome to Night Vale crew came up with is their parodies of the NRA’s slogan. Like:

    * Guns don’t kill people! It’s impossible to be killed by a gun; we are all invincible to bullets, and it’s a miracle.

    * Guns don’t kill people, we are all immortal souls living temporarily in shelters of earth and meat.

    Or:

    * If you say guns kill people one more time, we will shoot you with a gun, and you will (coincidentally) die.

  • John Horstman

    Holy false dichotomy Batman!

  • John Horstman

Also, my favorite satire of the “guns don’t kill people” meme is from Weird Al’s delightful VHF. In the scene, they’re interviewing an NRA supporter who says, “Gun’s don’t kill people, I do!” and pumps the shotgun he’s holding.

  • jnorris

If guns don’t kill people, then why does the army give soldiers guns?

  • smrnda

I don’t think people are good or bad inherently, but let’s just say that GUNS enable a bad person, or a normal person having a bad day to do a lot more damage than they could do with their fists, a knife, or a stick. A reason to restrict access to guns is that there probably are people who can be trusted with them, but there is no way to really screen for these people.

  • TxSkeptic

After the “gun accident” in the theater, someone should ask Barton where he would bury the survivors?

  • corwyn

How exactly was he going to go on a killing spree without a gun?

Sadly, any number of ways (which I won’t enumerate here of course).

  • bmiller

There are always ways that a rageaholic with time and resources to plan a bloodbath can kill people. But they are generally a lot more difficult than spraying a theater with gunfire.

  • zmidponk

I could be wrong, but I think it’s the ‘if you outlaw guns, only criminals will have guns’ bullshit, blended with a sort of reversal of the NRA slogan ‘guns don’t kill people, people kill people’, then talked about as if this is what liberals say and believe, leaving aside the small, inconsequential detail that it isn’t.
