Iranian Man Executed for ‘Waging War on God’

Yet another example of theocratic barbarism, this time out of Iran. Hashem Shaabani, a teacher and peace activist, was put to death by the Iranian government for the “crime” of “waging war against God.” Like many, he was tortured into a fake confession in order to justify his execution.

An Arab-Iranian poet has been executed in Iran for “waging war on God” and threatening national security, human rights groups say.

Hashem Shaabani was executed in an unidentified prison in late January, the Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre writes.

He had been sentenced to death in July 2012 by the Ahvaz Islamic Revolutionary Court for muharibih (“waging war on God”), sowing corruption on earth, propaganda against the Islamic Republic and acting against national security, it adds.

Shaabani, a member of the Arabic-speaking Ahvazis ethnic minority, was the founder of an organisation promoting Arabic culture and literature in Iran known as the Dialogue Institute and was popular for his Arabic and Persian poems, Al Jazeera reports.

It adds the 32-year-old often spoke out against the treatment of ethnic Arabs in the province of Khuzestan.

He was first arrested in 2011 and a year later he appeared on Iran’s state-owned Press TV, where following months of torture he was reportedly forced to confess to “separatist terrorism” and receiving assistance from Hosni Mubarak and Muammar Gaddafi.

In a letter published by Ahwaz News Agency last year, Shaabani pleaded for the intervention of human rights organisations and insisted he had “never participated in any armed activity, whatever the motives.”

He added: “I started my journey wielding my pen against the tyranny that is trying to enslave and imprison minds and thoughts; colonising people’s minds before colonising their lands and destroying people’s thoughts before destroying their region.”

And that tyranny has now murdered him.

I really don’t see how what he did is waging war on God, even in the twisted mind of a theocrat :-/

    #1 Thumper: Token Breeder,

It doesn’t matter. He said something the people in charge didn’t, something that can always get you killed under a brutal totalitarian dictatorship. This is not a regime that has any real respect for human rights. All they really care about is their agenda and staying in power.

    Thumper@1,

This charge is used against anyone opposing the Islamic Republic: functionally, it translates as “subversion”, “espionage”, or similar.

True enough. But how does that distinguish it from the power elites in the USA or the UK, which kill innocent people with drones and without any legal process? “But we have elections.” you may say. So does Iran, with some degree of real choice. Admittedly, candidates for President can be and are blocked from standing by the Guardian Council. But how much chance does a Presidential candidate in the USA have without the backing of billionaires?

  • marcus

Nick Gotts@ 3 The people who wantonly killed this innocent human being are evil lying murderers. Our “power elites” may also be evil lying murders, I won’t argue the point. IMO, however, there is something especially barbaric and cruel in this particular case.

What the hell, Ed?!? As a liberal atheist, you’re not ever supposed to express negative opinions on the barbarities of fundamentalist Muslims. Did you forget that they are our best allies in the War Against Christianity and the Struggle to Destroy ‘Merica?

SteveoR pointed that out in the OMG! The Iranians Are Coming thread a few days go. Apparently you need a reminder.

marcus – part of the difference is that our people in power mostly want to be as removed from the violence as possible. Those who actually torture have a literally hands-on approach.

    .

Nick – we have liberals in this country who are too squeamish to kill a cow for their Big Mac but who voted for a president who would send bombs and marines against the scary brown people. I hope none of them are posting here; I would be disappointed.

I voted for him because he was going to kill fewer brown people than the other guy. Least worst options are a part of any realistic moral calculus. Sadly, it’s easier to save cows than poor people in the middle east.

I might as well say you’re a hypocrite because you won’t shoot your neighbor in the face, but you’ll pay taxes that go to shoot somebody else’s neighbor in the face.

Hmmmm, evidence that Iran has a shitty government that suppresses the rights of its people.

    Much like Russia’s.

    Much like Pakistan’s

    Much like China’s.

    Much like ours, unfortunately.

But the chickenhawks only want to destroy one of those countries and murder their people. Hmmmmm, wonder why that is?

    @ ^ dogmeat :

Let’s look at this group you’ve lumped together for a sec

Russia – no fair and free elections, corrupt totalitarian state run by an ex-spy turned dictator.

Pakistan – corrupt murilky not-very-wellor stably governed nation that sheltered Osama bin Laden for a decade and secretly supports the Taliban whilst pretending to fight it.

China – Communist one party state totalitarian dictatorship that occupies Tibet and murders its people and its own dissidents.

The United States of America (I presume you are American right?) – a democracy with regular free and fair elections, stable secular constitutional law and the world’s only superpower that landed people on the Moon in peace for all Humanity. A land where freedom of expression and tolerance and respect for everyone’s ethnicity and religion or lack of religion is celebrated and a land to which the huddled masses like to flee for safety, opportunity and the pursuit of personal happiness.

One of those is the odd one out – its flippin’ obvious which one that is and why your comparison is ridiculous!

Also massive strawmonster and citations badly needed in claiming “chickenhawks” (who exactly?) want to destroy “only one” of tehse natiosn and “murder” its people.

I don’t think anyone has actually advocated this nor in the extremely unlikely event that they have that that individual or group of people would have suggested that just for Iran and not the others.

I said no such thing. Of course. Quite the opposite thing instead actually.

What is it with the pro-Islam faction here and their total lack of reading comprehension?

  • StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!

    Correction for clarity :

Pakistan – corrupt murkily and not-very-well or stably governed nation that sheltered Osama bin Laden for a decade and secretly supports the Taliban whilst pretending to fight it.

Also please note “sinned34” that I”m pretty sure Ed Brayton identifies as a Libertarian moderate atheist rather than a liberal one.
