Pussy Riot Members Violently Attacked

A few of the members of Pussy Riot may be out of prison, but they clearly aren’t out of danger. They’ve been arrested, struck with whips and now had acid thrown on them and been beaten by a mob of thugs at a McDonald’s in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

Two members of Pussy Riot were left with chemical burns and head injuries after they were attacked by youths in a branch of McDonald’s, the group said Thursday.

Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were left covered in green stains after “an organised group” of young men attacked them with antiseptic, pepper spray and weapons, Tolokonnikova’s husband Pyotr Verzilov said in an e-mail to AFP.

A video released by Pussy Riot showed six young men wearing patriotic Russian symbols shouting obscenities at the women while videoing the action in a branch of the fast-food chain in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.

One held up a placard saying: “Dirty whores, get out of the city.”…

Tolokonnikova posted doctors’ statements on Twitter saying she suffered chemical burns to her eyes, face and hands from the attack on Thursday.

Alyokhina said she required stitches for scratches on her forehead and suffered concussion.

This is barbaric. It’s really that simple.

Could we offer them asylum? Or am I being naive?

In Russia, free speech has you.

Maybe Pussy Riot and Ted Nugent are some kind of band version of Dorian Gray, they keep getting the treatment under Putin he claims he’s going to get under Obama. He’s already got the life of shallow debauchery done, next he just needs to gain self awareness and set them free.

  • Matrim

@ dhall. We COULD offer them asylum if they wanted it. I doubt we will, though.

Thank God Russia was liberated from the nightmare of Marxist tyranny!

Remember, Russia is now the right’s ideal for upholding “Christian moral values.”

Hey, at least they can be persecuted while eating a Big Mac.

Lancy – nice to see the concept of sarcasm (or even cynicism) hasn’t punctured your boyish appeal to naivety.

Hope Eddie Snowden enjoys his life there. So glad he landed in a place that truly respects an individual’s right to privacy and free expression. And with all those Black Sea resorts that Russia has just acquired, he’ll even be able to take temperate vacations without a passport. Aldrich Ames must be green with envy.

I’ve always been a fan of Russian civilization.

Or would be if they ever manage to come up with one.

First it was the Czars and serfdom. Followed shortly by the nightmare of communism. Followed by the nightmare of fascism.

It can’t get much worse. Oops, yes it can. I grew up during the duck and cover days of imminent nuclear war, not knowing if I was going to live long enough to even graduate from…grade school. We could always nuke each other.

  • raven

Lots of places could offer them asylum.

If they stay in Russia, they may well end up murdered. How much more persecuted than that can happen to a person.

timpayne, #9: Hope Eddie Snowden enjoys his life there.

Well, I’m sure he enjoys life there better than he would have enjoyed life in a US prison.

You are correct, though, that he certainly deserves much, much better, but seeing how none of the western European democracies are willing to offer him asylum and he has little ability to get himself to any of the other countries that have offered him asylum, looks like that’s the best that can be done right now.

I’m surprised this didn’t happen to the Dixie Chicks during the Bush years. Seems like a TP dream come true.

To be fair Ed, there’s nothing in that report that says they had acid thrown at them. The report says “antiseptic” (which, to be pedantic, is more likely to be mildly alkaline). Certainly being showered with antiseptic or any liquid in that manner is a horrific experience and no doubt can cause serious injuries, but I prefer to see the inaccurate headlines left to the right-wing media 😉

I’m sure they thought their rotten behavior was righteous: They were the “good” patriots protecting the land from the “dirty whores…” :/

Those guys where just expressing their religious freedom, which is a valid excuse as long as it’s the christian religion.

  • see_the_galaxy

I think their supporters should try to take a collection to help with medical and legal bills. How can this be done?

@3:”…they keep getting the treatment under Putin…”

Uh, these acts were committed by (quoting the story) “youths,” not Putin.

Damn that Obama and his weakness again!

    Could we offer them asylum?

Why would they want asylum? They’re activists. If they didn’t care about changing Russian culture, they’d just stop doing what they’re doing.

I’m sure that these are “sincerely held religious beliefs” so it’s all ok.

How ironic that you missed the humor in my remark while claiming I failed to see the humor in Chiroptera’s remark.

A little OT but it look like moron in chief Sarah Palin think, to use the term extremely loosely, that some nuclear saber rattling is just what the world need.

  • birgerjohansson

Putin is too smart to use uniformed blackshirts for this kind of thing. By encouraging “patriotic citizens” (usually self-appointed cossacks) to beat up people while the cops look the other way, there is no official responsibility for the violence. Which does not mean Russian police are not horribly brutal, and can not do outright torture when they think they can get away with it.

  • jba55

@18 “Uh, these acts were committed by (quoting the story) “youths,” not Putin.”

Uh, it was a joke and not meant to be taken so literally.

    .

And presumably even Ted Nugent expects mistreatment by Obama’s personal Muslim elite Black Ops operatives, not Obama himself.

Come to America! Our musicians and artists aren’t physically abused by government shills, they are merely economically abused by music industry shills.
