Barber: Bigotry Losing Due to ‘Leftist Propaganda’

That new Washington Post/ABC News poll that found record support for marriage even in states that passed laws banning same-sex marriage after 2004 is a real problem for the bigots. They can’t admit that people are just becoming less like them, so it must be “leftist propaganda.”

“The leftists’ propaganda is working,” Matt Barber, vice president of Liberty Counsel Action, says of the Washington Post-ABC News poll published this week.

In the poll, 50 percent said the U.S. Constitution gives homosexuals the right to marry under its guarantee of equal protection. Forty-one percent said it did not.

The poll also found a supposed record high of respondents, 59 percent, said they support same-sex marriage.

“The media and the entertainment industries are changing public opinion rather than reflecting public opinion, as you would expect and hope that they would,” Barber suggests.

Because of the propaganda, he adds, “people don’t scratch beneath the surface, don’t understand the facts and are easily swayed,” when the propaganda is overwhelmingly on one side of an issue.

Matt Barber in 1968: “Now that those left-wing judicial activists on the Supreme Court have overturned the will of the people and of God and allowed interracial marriage, the liberal media and Hollyweird are feeding people propaganda and trying to change public opinion rather than reflecting it. The communists in the movie industry are making films like Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and they’ve got a white Captain Kirk kissing the colored Lt. Uhura on Star Trek. They’ve clearly joined forced with the liberal media in an attempt to normalize interracial relationships.”

"What you call bigotry I say is a return to decency."

“The media and the entertainment industries are changing public opinion rather than reflecting public opinion, as you would expect and hope that they would”

Says a man who has dedicated his life to trying (and failing) to change public opinion rather than reflecting public opinion. His real complaint seems to be that other people are just better at persuasion than he is.

It’s another version of a common trope: “We’re right. We know we’re right. If other people don’t agree with us, it’s because they’ve been lied to, or bribed, or have some hidden evil agenda.” The idea that Barber might actually be wrong never gets off the ground.

ED – You mean out there somewhere in 1968 there’s a Matt Barber sporting a goatee who supports marriage equality?!?

people…are easily swayed when the propaganda is overwhelmingly on one side of an issue.

Even more so when the facts are. There’s your problem.

The best part? Live by the wedge issue, die by the wedge issue.

Bet the farm, Mr. Barber. Bet the farm.

So when they take their information and drill it into the heads of unwitting and unwilling children who have no choice because their parents are part of the brainwashing process teaches them to hate the gay, that’s okay.

But when well reasoned arguments that it might be a bad idea to hate someone simply because of who they love or who they desire changes a person’s mind, that’s “propaganda.”

    Got it.

“leftists’ propaganda” = “knowing someone who is LGBT and finding out they are not inhuman monsters,” aka “Ellen DeGeneres.”

“The media and the entertainment industries are changing public opinion rather than reflecting public opinion, as you would expect and hope that they would,”

I am unclear how asking the question “Overall, do you support or oppose allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally?” is a push-poll. Of course one could push-poll on the subject, but the Washpo poll certainly doesn’t look like one.

FYI, all the actual questions can be found here. You be the judge on whether it was a push-poll or not.

The media and the entertainment industries are changing public opinion rather than reflecting public opinion

Yeah! The bastards are showing gays as people just like everyone else rather than the monsters the rabid religious right thinks they are! Of course, the fact that 65% of Americans now know that they know gay people (as compared to the days when most gays were closeted) and can see that they don’t have two heads or want to molest children any more than straight people do has had nothing to do with it!

The media and the entertainment industries are changing public opinion rather than reflecting public opinion, as you would expect and hope that they would.

Yeah, the media should just tell people what they already believe without trying to present arguments or other viewpoints on issues. And entertainers should stop trying to present new ideas and just stick to whatever we’ve seen a million times before.

“The media and the entertainment industries are changing public opinion rather than reflecting public opinion, as you would expect and hope that they would,” Barber suggests.

So not everyone thinks it’s a good idea to live in an echo chamber? Especially not a right wing echo chamber? Who’d’ve thunk?

Like an idiot, I’ve spent the last ten minutes trying to figure out how old Barber is*, to see if he really is responsible for the quote from 1968… Nope. Okay, I got suckered, call me naive. (C’mon, I know absolutely zippo about the man.) Going by his photos on Liberty University’s website — pfff, dude looks like a salesman at a Verizon store in Cicero, Illinois — he’s younger than me. (*snort*) And he brags about hanging around with a convicted felon…

… In the form of G. Gordon Liddy. Shit buddy, you wanna hang around felons, I can introduce you to some. And all they were doing was moving large amounts of drugs. You know, chasing that American dream, following the entrepreneurial spirit; what’s wrong with that? (Dammit, if the Libertarians were in charge, they’d be considered visionaries!) What they weren’t doing was trying to circumvent and rape the United States Constitution. And my drug mule/dealer friends have some interesting stories to tell. What’s Liddy gonna talk about, his time on the film sets of Airwolf, Miami Vice, MacGyver, and Eighteen Wheels of Justice? (I’d pay money to see that last one.) How one time while working on Super Force, the Craft Services truck was a half hour late and he had to eat his bagel really fast?

Ooohh, what’s this: on his Liberty University page under “Areas of Interest/Teaching” is an entry of “Sexual Behavior and the Law.” Uh huh. Yup.

It’s almost too easy, so feel free to join in. Personally, I think it may translate to “You Get Caught Jerking Off On One City Bus and They Act Like You Killed Somebody.”

    Other possibilities:

    – Blowing the T.A. in Pre-Law For A Better Grade

    – When The Police Raid the Rest Stop Bathroom: A Field Guide

    – Flirting With the Court Reporter: Do’s and Don’ts

Alas, given his views, I’ve a hunch that “Sexual Behavior and the Law” is much more sinister. More along the lines of “Using the Law to Curtail the Sexual Behaviors of Others.” Any position other than missionary is a misdemeanor, carrying a fine of $500 and/or six months in jail; reverse cowgirl is a $1000 fine. Oral sex is a felony: suckin’ dick is a three year minimum for both participants, eatin’ pussy is the same. Dick-sucking by homosexuals is double the sentence… Although lesbians convicted of pussy-eating have their sentences reduced to fines, because girl-girl is, like, totally hot, dude. (Unless they’re butch; in which case, the sentence is tripled for ruining the wank session fantasy material of the judge and arresting cops.) Homosexual anal intercourse is a minimum seven year sentence. Heterosexual anal intercourse is a three year sentence; this may be modified to a $50 fine if the convicted woman is able to convince the prosecutor’s wife that no, it doesn’t hurt, it’s fun, you really should try it.

It goes without saying that any sexual activity which involves equipment — restraints, buggy whips, tables with straps built in, masks, drool gags, and fur-lined handcuffs will be dealt with harshly… Unless the accused can provide video files of the activities; upon receipt of the files, most judges will drop all charges, with the stipulation that new video files will be provided to the court every fourteen days for two years. If the files cannot be provided, the judge may request to attend one of the events in person. Anonymity on the part of the judge shall be assured; he is already in possession of a mask, leather chaps, and boots.

    Anyways….

Former boxer or not, I just can’t work up any feelings of threat or worry about Matt Barber. He’s a bigoted chump who attended Falwell’s School for the Terminally Angry and Terrified, who thinks that being interviewed by one of the Watergate criminals is a good thing, and has ensconced himself in a social bubble so tightly that them thar ho-mos are somehow a personal and societal threat to him. Maybe I’m getting away with straight privilege, but I refuse to consider him more than a pathetic dickwad, a panicky schmuck who’s managed to turn his personal issues into a career. Screw him.

These folks were shaped by propaganda, and raise their own children that way, so they have trouble imagining life without it. Especially because part of their conditioning is to avoid introspection and hypothetical situations and their consequences. It would never occur to them that other people might be different in that respect. In fact if you bring it up they will assume it is some sort of propaganda, and try to counter it with their own.
