Carson: Gay People Don’t Get ‘Extra Rights’

The right wing’s latest rising star, Ben Carson, spoke at CPAC and declared himself a brave truth-teller who will never bow to the “PC police.” And then he offered up this bit of stupid: “Of course gay people should have the same rights as everyone else. But they don’t get extra rights, they don’t get to redefine marriage.” Oh yes, of course. Because having the same rights you have is giving them “extra rights” or “special rights.” How does someone of Carson’s obvious intelligence say something that idiotic with a straight face?

How does someone of Carson’s obvious intelligence say something that idiotic with a straight face?

I would say that its a side-effect of a democratic form of government, but dictators seem equally fond of this behavior. So I’m at a loss.

they don’t get to redefine marriage

And in past years, your ideological forebears would have said:

Slaves don’t get to redefine ‘citizen.’

Women don’t get to redefine ‘voter.’

Interracial couples don’t get to redefine ‘marriage.’

  • Chiroptera

Huh. I suppose there was a time when conservatives were complaining about women trying to redefine “eligible to vote.”

“Marriage” has been “redefined” bunches of times. When anti-miscegenation laws were struck down, for example. In that some states “define” marriage to excluse first cousin marriages, other states “define” marriage” to allow first cousin marriages. Different states, I believe, still have different definitions of marriage depending on allowed minimum age for marriage.

I think that it’s time to point out that “redefine marriage” does not have a coherent meaning; it’s a dog whistle to get the dogs to start baying.

“Of course gay people should have the same rights as everyone else.”

And for over 200 years, heterosexual couples have had the right to marry the consenting adult of their choosing. Gay couples should also have that very same right.

  • Chiroptera

I meant to add “for over 200 years in the US.” I don’t know about the history if marriage laws in other countries.

  • sugarfrosted

Gay marriage doesn’t give gay people extra rights. Straight people are allowed to marry the same sex as well.

  • dugglebogey

Extra rights? That would be like asking to be tax exempt, like churches are.

Is that what they mean by extra rights?

  • Chiroptera

    lol

Looks like eric had the idea about women redefining “voting” before I did.

  • colnago80

Carson is also a creationist and has called the ACA Socialist. Like most tea partiers, he has not the slightest notion as to what Socialism is.

“And for over 200 years in the US, heterosexual [white] couples have had the right to marry the consenting adult of their choosing. Gay couples should also have that very same right.”

  • Hatchetfish

Since I’m pretty sure 1967 wasn’t over 200 years ago.

  • eric

@8 – couples have had the right to marry a consenting adult of their choosing? When did threesomes become legal?

Just teasing. I get the gist. :)

And Chiroptera – great minds think alike…

Sugarfrosted, if you’re not already married I want to have your babies.

  • RickR

“Special rights”? Really? That stupid little talking point? It’s like #47 on the list of anti-equality arguments by wingnuts. If there was an anti-equality list of claims that wingnuts shouldn’t use (like the list of anti-evolution arguments creationists shouldn’t use) then “special rights” would be at or near the top.

Who is this Carson guy and why was he invited to CPAC??

    *looks at picture*

    Ah. Got it.

How does someone of Carson’s obvious intelligence

Point of order… anyone that can say something that idiotic with a straight face, are by definition not intelligent, and that is obvious.

  • Pierce R. Butler

How does someone of Carson’s obvious intelligence say something that idiotic with a straight face?

A tacit implication that just maybe he could get on the shortlist for VP nominee?

  • Matt G

These assholes WANT THEIR OWN SPECIAL RIGHTS, for crying out loud: they want the right to discriminate against gays and lesbians. Another irony detector on its way to the landfill….

  • sharonb

    Response:

Why Dr. Carson [or insert other bigot name here], it’s not a special right.

You can marry your same-sex partner too, if you choose!

(That would probably shut them up.)

  • vmanis1

    Nothing shits those clowns up.

If I don’t have the right to stand up and say stupid things without people laughing at me, why should Dr Carson?

  • vmanis1

    Oops! `shits’-> `shuts’

    Paging Dr Freud…

Fuck. Another black American who thinks that walking behind the elephant with a broom and a shovel is the same things as being the ringmaster. Idiot.

“How does someone of Carson’s obvious intelligence say something that idiotic with a straight face?”

    Ed:

How does someone with your obvious intelligence manage to finish typing that sentence without hurting yourself? I’ve met a lot of pretty stupid people with very impressive resumes. I have no idea how it happens but it is not uncommon for people that are shallow, venal and indignorant to wind up in charge of, well, a larger group of shallow, venal and indignorant people.

“Women don’t get to redefine ‘voter.’”

I think what they really set about re-defining was themselves as persons rather than chattel.

  • Francisco Bacopa

We can trust this guy to cut a child’s skull open and remove part of the brain, all while reasonably expecting the child to get better as a result. Yet he says this and is a creationist. Intelligence and skill are surely compartmentalized.

  • Doc Bill

“How does someone of Carson’s obvious intelligence say something that idiotic with a straight face?”

That’s the power of religious delusion that, as Hitchens said, poisons everything.

Michael Egnor is another surgeon who is quite delusional. You don’t have to have an intellect to be a doctor, you just need an ability to learn your trade. Outside of that you can be batshit crazy.

Of course, in the CPAC forum there is no discretion, anything goes and nobody is too insane. It’s really quite shocking if you consider that this car of clowns represents the so-called “intellectual” wing of the Republican party. Just a bunch of sexually repressed grifters.

When Ben Carson says, “Of course gay people should have the same rights as everyone else,” he means that gay people are as entitled to marry partners of the opposite sex as straight people. This is a variation on the theme that laws against sleeping on sidewalk grates apply to rich people as much as to the homeless. The sheer inanity of the statement is thus cloaked in a kind of pseudo-logic. This style of “reasoning” is popular within fringe groups like the Tea Party.

  • http://Reallyawakeguy.blogspot.com somnus

Redefining marriage wouldn’t count as a special right anyway. People and societies have been defining it and redefining it throughout history. All gay people are doing is claiming their right to represent themselves honestly at the table where the definitions are made.

  • dingojack

    Brain surgery eh?

    :) Dingo

  • mikeyb

What Ben Carson wish he could say – gay people don’t deserve any rights, they are hell bound sinners who need our prayers for them to repent and get the therapy to get the gay out.

I’m single. Whoever the fuck wants to get married should be able to. Knock yourselves the fuck out. Have a great time.

Oh, please, no tax breaks for it. And, um, stuff.

‘How does someone of Carson’s obvious intelligence say something that idiotic with a straight face?’

He thinks about all the shit he’s going to buy with his speaking fees.

  • colnago80

    Re Doc Bill @ #21

This is more applicable to surgeons then other medical specialists. A surgeon is like an automobile mechanic. He/she doesn’t have to know much about science in general or biology in particular to perform his/her tasks, just as an automobile mechanic doesn’t have to know anything about the thermodynamics of internal combustion engines to work on a car’s engine.
