Cable News and the Malaysian Airplane

CNN has decided that the disappearance of the Malaysian airplane is their ticket back to ratings gold (and there is evidence that they’re right), but devoted virtual round-the-clock coverage to that one topic has led to what can only be described as monumental stupidity, especially from Don Lemon. Here he asks if a black hole might have swallowed up the plane (you know, without swallowing up all of us with it, presumably).

And here he wonders if something “supernatural” might have made the plane disappear:

Seriously. These aren’t conspiracy theories, as they keep saying, they’re just the babbling of people who literally have no idea what they’re talking about.

About Ed Brayton

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

The Daily Show had a good segment on this a couple of days ago. In addition to showing CNN’s journalistic sellout, Stewart also pointed out that while some commentators like Rachael Maddow are decrying this behavior, her own home network (MSNBC) is also doing it.

Last Wednesday, Hannity was on at a restaurant. His guests pointed out that Israeli military was on alert over this and they don’t go on alert for no reason. (Yeah right.)

About the only “theory” as to the disappearance of the plane that I haven’t yet heard is that the plane was captured by aliens and the people taken back to their home planet for dissection and anal probing. But then, I don’t listen to or watch much radio or TV.

Heh, so, my main online source for new is BBC — but if there is some breaking news that I am curious about, and I want to hear the speculation now instead of waiting 20 minutes for it to be vetted, I’ll very occasionally pop over to CNN. They are more willing to toss up a rumor than an unverified rumor than the Beeb, after all :) And yeah, the Malaysian Airlines disappearance, with all of its rapid-breaking news and unverified rumors, has caused at least one visit to CNN that wouldn’t have happened otherwise..

I quite liked Rachel Maddow’s segment on MH370 the other day. She said, `There was no news today on the missing plane. We’d like to have news to report on this story, but we have none. When we have some, we’ll bring it to you. Back after the break.’

    So…much…air…time…to…fill!

@4 – I think Stewart cited an approximate doubling of CNN’s ratings. So they’re getting a lot more than just one extra click. :)

Larry (#3) – You think so? Let’s see how Australia’s answer to the Beeb reported it on a little show called Media Watch.

Well, CNN is trying to compete with the Fascist News Channel by out stupiding them.

I’m reminded of an old quote I read attributed to Carl Sagan that went something like this: “There’s no mystery in the Bermuda triangle because it is mostly water, where planes and boats can easily sink out of sight. Now a Duluth triangle, that would be a mystery.”

  • Abby Normal

MH370 already found… 20 years ago… in the Bermuda triangle.

“Good evening. This is CNN Headline News for 10 pm on March 26, 2024, and our top story at this hour: Flight MH370 is still missing…”

Mark Chu-Carroll over at “good math, bad math” calculates that if you took the entire surface area of the plane, flattened it out, and spread it over the surface of the ocean, it would still only cover 0.1% of one square mile. IOW human intuitions about how easy it would be to locate airplane debris in the ocean even if its floating in plain sight is way, way off. So there is no need to even posit ‘sunk without a trace.’ Unless you have a good idea where it is to begin with, not finding floating debris is pretty much the expected outcome.

You might want to keep that one under your hat- given CNN’s desperation for content, they might start pestering you for an interview!

As stupid as it is, at least he can claim that he is just addressing theories that people are submitting. More disturbing is the response from the panelist that even a small black hole would suck in our entire universe.

  • colnago80

    Re greg1466 @ #18

Considering that there is a giant black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy (some millions of Sun masses), which has done no such thing, his ignorance of modern astronomy is mind boggling.

To be fair, you never really understand black holes until you meet one face-to-face. Then you can never forget. The one I met, while baking naked, plucked all the sesame seeds off my buns.

Hannity had ex US Air Force General Tom McInnerny on his show on the 19th, who claimed the plane was In Pakistan, and that this would be revealed to the public in 48 hours. And here we are, a week later, and no grand revelation.
