Meet the Wingnut Candidate: Bob Marshall

There are a lot of far right candidates out there saying astonishingly stupid and appalling things, but Bob Marshall, a state legislator in Virginia now running for Congress, may have them all beat. Even the Moonie Times is reporting on his history of bizarre and extremist statements.

Delegate Robert G. Marshall has said that disabled children can be God’s vengeance against women who have had abortions. He has described incest as sometimes voluntary, and he has questioned the sexuality of a Supreme Court justice who has favored marriage equality.

But unlike W. Todd Akin, whose offhanded reference to “legitimate rape” cost the GOP a winnable Senate seat from Missouri in 2012, Mr. Marshall is unbowed over his history of controversial rhetoric as he seeks a seat in Congress representing Northern Virginia.

“I don’t care. I mean, if I say something in public, I say it in public,” Mr. Marshall said Thursday…

Speaking before a pro-life group last year, Mr. Marshall offered a long and detailed argument that Justice Anthony M. Kennedy’s majority opinion in the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage was unsympathetic to social conservatives.

But it was the statement with which he capped his remarks that stood out.

“For all I know, Kennedy’s a homosexual,” he said. “You can’t be doing some of these things without this kind of conclusion.”

Like many of his other comments, Mr. Marshall stands by it.

“Clearly, some of the people who are making these decisions must be rationalizing their own bad behavior,” he said Thursday.

In 2010, at an event calling for an end to state funding for Planned Parenthood, Mr. Marshall suggested that women who have abortions are more likely to face “vengeance” from “nature” in children with a greater likelihood of having developmental disabilities.

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion who have handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the firstborn of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” Mr. Marshall said.

The author of a 1989 Boston Globe column asked him about his opposition to all abortion — even in cases of rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother. Mr. Marshall, then the research director for the American Life League, posed a baffling question of his own in response.

“What if incest is voluntary?” Mr. Marshall said. “Sometimes it is.”

Ladies and gentlemen, today’s GOP.

“I don’t care. I mean, if I say something in public, I say it in public,” Mr. Marshall said Thursday…

I can see that. Marshall said nothing that anyone who is not decent or deserving of respect should apologize for.

Now I’m torn. I can’t decide between Voluntary Incest or The Subsequent Children as a band name.

  • dmcclean

There is even more fail behind the “What if incest is voluntary? Sometimes it is.” comment.

Even if this were true it wouldn’t be relevant, because his interlocutor wasn’t proposing that abortion be mandatory in all cases of incest, just that it be available for the woman (or girl) to choose. Such a proposal would have no adverse impact on Marshall’s hypothetical participant in voluntary incest if she also voluntarily wished to carry the pregnancy to term.

    Bob Marshall:

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion who have handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the firstborn of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” Mr. Marshall said.

This is a flat out lie. Researchers looked at it decades ago. The data says it doesn’t happen.

    2. It is also very insulting to people who were born handicapped. Cthulhu, they already have lives that are hard enough.

Silly Raven, trying to respond to a wingnut with facts. They don’t know the meaning of the word.

Well, Bob Marshall is a morally defective liar. No surprise, it is a fundie xian characteristic, after all.

But his Sky Monster god isn’t looking so good either.

His imaginary Monster god is punishing innocent children for the (alleged) sins of the parents.

Even we humans don’t do this very often and generally consider it ethically wrong. It’s a pathetic god when humans are better than it.

  • Synfandel

Strictly speaking, carnal relations between two competent and consenting adult siblings would be voluntary incest—not that that has any relevance to the question the delegate was asked, as dmcclean (@3) explains above.

    Motherfuckers tend to say that.

Silly Raven, trying to respond to a wingnut with facts. They don’t know the meaning of the word.

    Yeah I know.

    1. Can god create a rock so big he can’t lift it?

Can fundie xians create a monster so cuckoo even they won’t vote for him?

    2. It is sort of a touchy subject for people, including myself. We’ve all seen people born with handicaps of one sort or another, including in my own extended family. Some of these peope are now dead early…due to their congenital conditions.

Bob Marshall would blame god and the parents. Normal people would blame reality. The universe isn’t perfect and stuff happens.

The Rethuglicans will be choosing their candidate in a convention, not in a primary. Marshall’s opponent, Barbara Comstock, ain’t nothing to write home about but compared to him, she’s a left wing pinko commie. This is a winnable seat for Democrats, it they run a strong candidate. Obama carried the district in 2008 and barely lost it in 2012.

  • Richard Smith

For all I know, Marshall’s an ignorant asshole. You can’t be saying some of these things without this kind of conclusion.

  • Nihilismus

So God doesn’t want a women to terminate a pregnancy even when it is clear the fetus has a serious deformity that will make the possible baby’s life painful — and if she goes ahead and terminates the pregnancy anyway, God will make sure any child she is willing to carry to term is also deformed? Doesn’t this just keep encouraging her to terminate each pregnancy?

As for voluntary incest, I assume he means sexual relations from two consenting adults who are close enough in relation to fall under a particular state’s incest laws. Although I am pro-choice, I never fully understood “incest” always being lumped in with rape and life of the mother “compromise” exceptions to abortion. I mean, if people are thinking of a father impregnating his underage daughter, that would fall under rape, or at least statutory rape — the point of the exception being a lack of consent. Consensual incest doesn’t make much sense as an exception to a pro-life position based on competing interests.

When it’s involuntary* incest, the woman’s body has a way of shutting the whole thing down.

    * AKA “rape”

  • iknklast

Raven @4: Don’t you know? You can tell if a woman had an abortion if she had a disabled child. If she says she never had an abortion, but her child is born with some disease or challenge, she is obviously lying.

Vindictive asshole. A sadist, too since all of these ‘sins” are things that He, a supposedly omnipotent being, could easily prevent.

    @2,

Voluntary Incest or The Subsequent Children

Long band names were all the rage for a while, what the heck, Voluntary Incest and the Subsequent Children (VISC) It has a ring, I like it.

Synfandel@7, my poor eyes late at night saw “carnal relations” as “camel relations” and I wondered what other perversions Marshall thinks are sometimes voluntary.

Now if only there were a prominent Republican woman with a disabled child to tell this guy that he’s full of it.

  • dingojack

“What if incest is voluntary?” Mr. Marshall said. “Sometimes it is.”

““Clearly, some of the people who are making these decisions must be rationalizing their own bad behavior,”

So Mr Marshall — when did you stop having sex with your own children?

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion who have handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the firstborn of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” Mr. Marshall said.

    So he’s a neo-Lamarckian. Color me unsurprised.

  • Trebuchet

As for voluntary incest, I assume he means sexual relations from two consenting adults who are close enough in relation to fall under a particular state’s incest laws.

In all seriousness, I’m sure you are incorrect. He means fathers having sex with young daughters, who, being female, are just natural sluts.
