Franklin Graham Loves Putin Too

The love affair between the anti-gay Christian right and Vladimir Putin continues. Franklin Graham, the son of Billy Graham, went on ABC News on Sunday and praised Putin’s anti-gay crusade as him doing the right thing for Russia, as though the right thing for Russia was different than the right thing for America.

Speaking to ABC News on Sunday, Graham doubled down on his praise of the Russian president.

“Putin is going to do what’s right for Russia, and not what’s right for America, but for Russia,” he opined. “We used to have a president in this country that did what’s right for this country, but we don’t seem to have that right now.”

“Putin is going to make these decisions that he thinks is best for the Russian people, and he thinks that taking advantage of children — exploiting children — is wrong for any group so they passed a law,” Graham added. “So, I do agree with him.”

He’s lying, of course. The Russian law has nothing to do with “exploiting children.” It uses children as a fake excuse to punish people merely for saying that gay people should be treated equally. People have been arrested under the new law just for wearing a shirt with a rainbow on it in public and for holding pro-equality signs. This is totalitarianism being justified with the lie that it’s necessary to protect children.

And is there any doubt that Graham would support the same law in the U.S. if he thought it had any chance of passing? The Christian right is so smitten with Putin over this precisely because he can push through an agenda they no longer can here.

The moral of the story: Don’t ever let Franklin Graham handle your jewelry because he’ll pocket it in the name of God.

Putin is an authoritarian dictator who hates gays and will use any pretext to invade another country. I’m surprised right wingers aren’t offering to have his babies.

People have been arrested under the new law just for … holding pro-equality signs.

To be fair, some have also been arrested for not carrying pro-equality signs.

Oh, I think Graham thinks a similar law would be the right thing for America, which is why he makes the crack about our not having a president who does what’s right for this country. He’s just lamenting that we don’t have an autocrat who could push through a law Graham likes, even though it is opposed by a majority of Americans. Not that Putin had that problem in Russia, where homophobia still reigns.

So the only people actually exploiting children are the people passing shitty laws in name of preventing children from being exploited.

About those admirers of Putin as an exemplary homophobe, what do they think about him and Ukraine? Will they consider him good on some things and bad on others? Or will they take his side about Ukraine?

  • Nick Gotts

    lpetrich@8,

They’ll have to decide who’s more homophobic. The fascist party Svoboda, which has several ministers in the current Ukranian cabinet as well as the public prosecutor’s office, is certainly providing Putin with some serious competition.
