Glenn Beck’s Massive Messiah Complex

Man, if you needed any further evidence that Glenn Beck has a serious messiah complex, take a look at this video from his radio show on Thursday where he compares himself to Martin Luther King, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Nelson Mandela and says this:

“Imprison me,” Beck said, looking directly into the camera, “go ahead, imprison me. I will not sit down, I will not shut up. I won’t. I will not conform. I will not comply. Period.”

“If I may quote Obi Wan,” he concluded, “strike me down. Strike me down. I will become far more powerful than you can imagine.”

Come on, that’s comedy gold. I find it endlessly amusing how he alternates between false humility — “I’m nobody. I’m just a guy who listens to God and does what he’s told” — and these grandiose declarations about how important and powerful he is. It’s easy to sound so brave when you know the thing you claim to be so resolute about won’t ever happen.

Wasn’t his mother a schizophrenic who committed suicide or something? Tragic, but I suspect he’s not merely deluded but genuinely suffering untreated mental illness that may run in his family.

I sometimes wonder if these folks are simply con artists who don’t really give a rat’s ass about politics, but see how easy it is to fleece outraged right wingers.

At the first sign of trouble he’d fold like an empty suit.

  • ianeymeaney

@1 He is an alcoholic and recovered cocaine addict. If you watch him, I doubt the “recovered” part.

With the goatee, Beck looks like he should holding up a piece of parchment, offering some poor schlub fame and fortune in exchange for his soul.

When I was looking up the American Spring last Saturday, one of the places I stopped by at was the report on the Blaze. It was interesting that all the comments from the proponents of OAS there were lividly against Beck — “Beckstabbed” was the word they used multiple times — because he hadn’t done anything to publicize the march ahead of time, and only referred to it disparagingly after it had failed. The posters opined (correctly, I suspect) that he was against the whole thing because it wasn’t his idea.

It was all extremely entertaining to watch them squabble.

Imprison me,” Beck said, looking directly into the camera, “go ahead, imprison me. I will not sit down, I will not shut up. I won’t. I will not conform. I will not comply. Period.”

Well, if he won’t sit down in his car he can’t buckle his seatbelt, which could get him a ticket in most states ….

Beck is like that villain that Rorschach dropped down an evelator shaft off panel.

  • Larry

Well, Beck certainly put that strawman in its place.

If one wants a true example (providing that this story is true) of bravery, take a look at this:

    thedailybeast:

His mom, Mary, wrestled with addiction and manic depression, leading to a marital split and her death by drowning, which police called an accident but Beck believes was a suicide.

Beck was noted for drastic mood swings long before he become political, popular, and a Mormon.

What you see is what you get. He isn’t hiding anything. While he is a pretty weird guy, he also isn’t stupid. His net worth since getting sent off from Fox NoNews is estimated at $100 million.

Beck’s descent into madness is a classic example of the danger of surrounding oneself with yes-men and sycophants. He really thinks the vast majority of the country are his followers.

With the up-swept hairdo & the incipient goatee, he may be hoping to understudy Mr. Deity.

  • himurastewie

He’s way above his pay grade trying to compare himself to Obi-wan.

  • bones

Hey wasn’t Obi-Wan Kenobi the messiah figure in Star Wars?

  • Jeremy Shaffer

bones at 15- Nope. That was Anakin Skywalker.

    Glenn Beck-

“If I may quote Obi Wan,” he concluded, “strike me down. Strike me down. I will become far more powerful than you can imagine.”

Why ask if you can quote someone if you’re only going to paraphrase them?

Obi-Wan: You can’t win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

Help me Glenn Beck you’re my only… no I can’t even type it without cracking up

  • dingojack

Mr Bek opined*: “If I may quote Obi Wan… ”

I suspect he was going for JarJar Binks** but he got confused by all the bright shiny things.

    * Yep, rhymes with ‘whined’

** Still above Glennie’s pay-grade, but less glaringly

  • Moggie

He’s aiming rather high with Obi Wan. At best he’s a Jawa, scavenging any old crap he can find and selling it on to the gullible. Utini!

  • zmidponk

Nah, I think he’s more like Wesley Crusher.

In other words, doesn’t even belong in the same universe.
