God Shows Terrible Aim Again

American wingnuts are not the only ones who blame all kinds of routine natural events to the anger of God over this or that — usually gay people, of course. After a drag artist won the Eurovision singing competition, Orthodox Christian religious leaders say that caused flooding that killed dozens of people.

Conchita Wurst is responsible for flooding that left over 50 people dead earlier this month, church leaders in the Balkans have claimed.

The Austrian drag artist, whose real name is Thomas Neuwirth, seized international attention after winning Eurovision 2014 with his hit Rise Like a Phoenix.

However, several church leaders have now claimed the recent devastating flooding across the Balkans, which was the worst in a century and left over 50 people dead, was “divine punishment” for Conchita’s victory.

“This [flood] is not a coincidence, but a warning,” Patriarch Amfilohije of Montenegro said, according to e.novine.com. “God sent the rains as a reminder that people should not join the wild side.”

Patriarch Irinej, the spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Serbs, reportedly said the floods were “divine punishment for their vices” and that “God is thus washing Serbia of its sins”.

It’s incredible to me that they never stop to think that this says about this god they worship that he gets angry at one person and decides to kill 50 other people who had nothing to do with it and displace 150,000 people from their homes with a flood. If a human being did that, we’d rightly consider them hopelessly immoral and barbaric.

Why do you think they’re so afraid of their god getting offended? They believe that they are more likely to receive ‘divine punishment than the offender is for not killing said offender themselves – used to be SOP for believers to do so.

Since, by definition, everything God does is moral and good, He can’t possibly be immoral or barbaric. [/sarcasm]

Funny how god never seems to be angered by dictators, ethnic cleansers, thought controllers, concentration camp guards, banksters, child raping priests, corrupt politians, fascists, racists…..there is no end to this list.

Near four years ago, God decided it was time to punish San Francisco for its many sins. He smote them with fire! Of course, this actually took the form of a gas explosion in San Bruno, but that’s close to San Francisco! Idiots were quick to learn the wrong lesson.

I think this calls into to question the whole Sodom and Gomorrah episode. Could it be that they were two perfectly fine towns wiped out when a myopic god wanted to stop pool in River City?

Did they really just use the phrase “wild side?” Is he a Lou Reed fan?

  • dingojack

Well, that’ll teach Patriarch Irinej not to phone-in to vote for Conchita Wurst to win Eurovision. (But, to be fair, he thought he was voting for a woman).

No, no, NO! You keep making the mistake of assuming that whilst the great magic sky faerie’s spacial aim is wonky, its/her/their/his temporal aim is Ok.

    It’s not.

It/She/They/He are as bad at time as at location.

Clearly, the floods are punishment for the will-eventually-be-recent scandals at the Japanese Mars Base.

(At least the correct stellar system and species is being punished, that is considerably more accurate than usual.)

That’s nothing compared to what they said when women started wearing trousers.

  • marcus

@3 Well, duh. I’m pretty sure it says somewhere in the Babble, “it is better that a million people die (or in this case 50) than to suffer one transvestite musical performance.”

I’d say they got off light.

That’s nothing compared to what they said when women started wearing trousers.

Yeah, in that case the great sky faerie’s tantrum created the Horsehead Nebula. Amazingly, it/they/she/he eventually realized that was a miss, and so shot again. Exactly what happened is not clear, but a common hypothesis is that shot is responsible for zucchini.

When I took a physical geography course in the early ’80s, the unit on water systems and flooding never mentioned anything about award-winning Austrian drag queens. Must be a more recent field of research.

So if we kill all the homosexuals, can they promise that ALL NATURAL DISASTERS will stop?

No rational person, christian (i know, I know) or otherwise, believes this.

In my head that sentence came out in the voice of Hedley Lamarr and was followed by, “…rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers, and Methodists!”

It’s about damn time. Those Serbians have had it too good for too long. Why, it’s been almost fifteen whole years since they were butchering each other.

Orthodox priests dislike bearded men in dresses?

Maybe we should take up a collection to get Yahweh some smiting lessons. The old boy seems to have quite a duck hook.

Ironically, the catastrophic flooding caused by the Banqiao Dam failure in 1975 (worst dam failure in history) was God’s punishment for Metal Machine Music. True story.

Better still, if we all just stop believing in him, he will grow small and weak like the Great God Om.

Childish. immature. ignorant, goat herding mutha’ fuckers without a clue…no wonder logic and analytical thinking is banned, or at least severely discouraged in most religions seeing as fictitious superheroes, especially the xtian one, suffer unimaginable grief when exposed to it just like kryptonite affects Superman.

A drag artist? He had a cordless mic or a really long cord?

    Oh, wait, you meant….

Far be it from me to defend our locally-grown band of lunatics, but last I heard while some priests did mention the whole ‘wrath of God’ thing Irinej actually spoke out against that notion. All his statements were generic ‘unity, solidarity, compassion, great tragedy, &c &c’ stuff.

I read the linked source in the Telegraph article and it doesn’t mention either Irinej or Amfilohije saying anything of the sort. It does mention Amfilohije being unhappy with the whole Conchita thing[1] but only as an aside. It was actually a condemnation of the violence in the Ukraine that the main speech was about, especially the people burned alive by Right Sector in Odessa.

We are in a situation that’s horrible enough as-is. I don’t think we require further kicking by way of inventing more terrible things just now.

[1] Not a big surprise there. The traditional churches are just that. Traditional. And traditionally they’ve had the monopoly on bearded men in dresses.

Actually…. people DO do that. Maybe not on that scale, but people fairly regularly go out and get revenge for slights that are real or imagined on those who had nothing to do with the original wrong. We (as in, society) usually call them insane.

  • dingojack

samgardner – Well yes, usually we regard them as insane….

Austria has at least 230 years of history of drag performance, and even double drag, going back to Mozart (Cherubino) and and R. Strauss (Oktavian). There are many other “trouser” or “travesti” roles in opera, very many from Vienna. Die Hexe in Haensel und Gretl. This is old news in Austria.

  • robnyny

Not to mention the men who performed as women.

  • matty1

I thought it was temporal aim, my idea though was that he meant to hit Austria and got areas that were in the Austrian Empire prior to WWI. After all, what’s a century when you’re eternal?

The idea of punishments for future sins though raises worrying possibilities. Maybe the first world war was punishment for the second and the second for… well you get the idea. God could be causing himself lot of extra work by nor concentrating on what time looks like to us mortals.
