Son Declares Duck Dynasty Patriarch a Prophet

There are a few basic rules I think we should all accept: Anyone who declares themselves to be an alpha male isn’t one (and there isn’t such a thing anyway); anyone who declares themselves to be humble isn’t; and anyone who says they or someone they love is a prophet, they’re completely full of shit. Like the Duck Dynasty guy.

The son of “Duck Commander” Phil Robertson compared his father to John the Baptist at the Family Research Council’s “Watchmen on the Wall 2014″ event earlier this week.

“My dad has the heart and mindset of a prophet and is most compared to John the Baptist … for speaking the truth in a culture that isn’t prepared to hear truth,” Alan Robertson said.

“That doesn’t change my dad’s view at all. Prophets tend not to care about their public image. They tend to talk about their judgment as if it’s real and they speak what God gives them to speak…so he is, in that sense, a 21st century prophet.”

Robertson characterized his father as having a “peel-the-paint message of the good news and a reminder of what our country was founded on and why.”…

He then said that his father is a “culture-changer,” like the biblical prophets Elijah and Jonah, and the message he took from the controversy surrounding his father’s comments was “to learn from these prophets. I want to encourage you guys to tell the truth. As a family, we’re going to do that.”

No, he isn’t a prophet. He’s a bigot. And the bigots are losing this battle. Hell, they’ve already lost it. You aren’t changing the culture, the culture is changing without you. Just like it did with George Wallace and so many others.

In that sense, I am a 21st century prophet. I mean, I don’t believe in god but as I understand it a person can only speak what God gives them to speak. If God didn’t want me to speak this way he could always give me something else to say. And my judgement is really, really real. Really awesome.

Also, I am the humblest motherfucker around.

Another basic rule: anyone who says they hate drama either causes or enables drama.

  • jameshanley

I wonder if they’re familiar with Luke 18:22-23?

“Another basic rule: anyone who says they hate drama either causes or enables drama.”

    True that.

Prophets tend not to care about their public image.

Says the guy who belongs to a family that changed their entire image in order to sell themselves as something they’re not to the public.

the duck dynasty guy is about close to a prophet as a druggie is to being a psyhic.

  • gmacs

Sure he’s a prophet. He doesn’t really talk to god, as there isn’t one, but he acts like the others throughout history. He pits himself against the prevailing views, while surrounding himself with a gaggle of sycophants, advocating the marriage of child brides, and railing against homosexuals.

Sounds like Paul, Mohamed, Moses, et al. to me.

$$$ Profit $$$. When daddy dies the spawn will go back to appearing as the oblivious yuppies they really are.

I’ve got a big platter, does anyone know where Salome is?

I think this one applies more in this case.

The show Duck Dynasty follows the Robertson family which is a wealthy family in West Monroe Louisiana. This is probably 3-4 hours from where I live.

The show, of course, portrays them as very eccentric. But photos from before the show exist, document that they look pretty much exactly like every other upper middle class to wealthy southern family in that area does. Clean cut, preppy, playing golf, following sports and making yearly trips to Destin. The big difference between a wealthy family there and a wealthy family in the midwest or northeast is that maybe the kids get nice trucks instead of sports cars.

The beards and the eccentricness is all an act for the TV show, which has made them quite a bit more money.

Maybe they realize this and they’re laughing all the way to the bank, but people don’t watch the show because they admire the people on it, they watch it to laugh at the freaks.

I guess they aren’t worried because those aren’t even real people on the show, they’re wearing costumes and pretending to be that stupid. In their normal lives they don’t even wear beards.

Something nobody has mentioned yet: in proclaiming his daddy a “prophet,” he is endorsing his earlier homophobic comments. Will he be driven off the show like his father was?

Disclaimer: I don’t follow “Duck Dynasty,” so I may be wrong in my impression that the father was kicked off, but the show continues.

By declaring his father a prophet, the son demonstrates that he himself is not.

And, for that matter, I’m pretty skeptical about the father, too.

  • thebookofdave

his father is a “culture-changer,” like the biblical prophets Elijah and Jonah

I can hardly wait for his father to be next to change our culture by being swallowed by a fish. Then I can finally retake my rightful place as the exemplar of humbleness. The rest of you guys are doing it wrong.

  • Kermit Sansoo

Ed, sure there are alpha males. Just because authoritarians from the left side of the bell curve (and pop culture) have risible and simplistic handles on various concepts doesn’t mean that we have to reduce our own vocabulary.

  • busterggi

I’ll never understand why frauds like the Ducks have any fans. Are all these Christofascists dumber than Honey Boo-Boo’s family?

  • caseloweraz

From what I know about John the Baptist, he lived alone in the desert & was probably celibate.

This describes the Duck Dynasty guy to a T, amirite?

The Bible has Jesus contrasting public attitudes toward himself with how John was regarded (Matthew 11:18):

“For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

“My dad has the heart and mindset of a prophet and is most compared to John the Baptist … for speaking the truth in a culture that isn’t prepared to hear truth,” Alan Robertson said.

Anyone else picturing ol’ Phil’s head on a platter? He’d better watch out for dancing girls.

    @busterggi

Are all these Christofascists dumber than Honey Boo-Boo’s family?

You really had to ask that question? H.L. Mencken had the answer for you:

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

  • coffeehound

…..his father is a “culture-changer,” like the biblical prophets Elijah and Jonah

Sure. Like Tamagochi or pet rocks.

“My dad has the heart and mindset of a prophet and is most compared to John the Baptist … for speaking the truth in a culture that isn’t prepared to hear truth,” Alan Robertson said.

Yeah…….sometimes that’s just a dipshit being ignored, but I can see how you might get it confused.

Kermit Sansoo seems to have gotten lost from someplace else.

  • Numenaster

@timgueguen, no, he’s just responding to a minor inaccuracy in the OP.

Also, speaking as a dancer with a great veil routine, I would only accept payment in severed heads if they were gold plated. Salome got robbed.

    Maybe he meant “profit”

I think Mr. Robertson is every bit of a prophet just like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Rick Warren, Alex Jones, Ted Nugent, or Sarah Palin.
