Franks: Obama Wouldn’t Care if Terrorists Take Texas

Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona is mounting a serious challenge to Louis Gohmert for the title of the dumbest man in Congress. Discussing the appalling situation of the woman in Sudan being put to death for marrying a Christian on Tony Perkins’ radio show, Franks made this staggeringly stupid statement:

The Arizona Republican of course managed to blame President Obama for the situation, telling FRC president Tony Perkins that the administration isn’t helping the woman, who is married to a U.S. citizen.

“I wonder if this administration would worry if Al Qaeda took Texas,” he said. “He might say it’s none of our business. It’s just really starting to be something that frightens me terribly and I think it is indicative of why this administration has been so soft on trying to protect religious freedom here.”

When Perkins joked that Al Qaeda would have a tough time “taking Texas,” Franks responded that Texans “might not get much help from the federal government, from this administration anyway.”

Really, Trent? It frightens you terribly that Obama might just let Al Qaeda take over Texas? You might want to stop listening to the voices in your head. They’re clearly morons. Your move, Gohmert.

Now don’t you go misunderestimating Louis like that. He’s bound to come back strong.

Me, I have days when I wouldn’t care if Al Qaeda took Texas either, as long as they promised not to release Rick Perry, Gohmert, and all those other bright sparks.

    colnago in 5…4…3…

    to agree.

“Discussing the appalling situation of the woman in Sudan being put to death for marrying a Christian on Tony Perkins’ radio show…”

Were they discussing it on Tony’s show, or was the woman married on Tony’s show, or was she ‘put to death’* on Tony’s show, (or perhaps ‘put to death’ because she married a christiaan on Tony’s show)…? [/pedant] :)

OK I’ll say it, if the Al-Queda overran Texas, apart from some superficialities, what would be the difference?

    * pretty desperate way to get ratings in all cases, but live execution on Radio and TV, sounds like perfect Texan fare, a real ratings winner.

What I love about Right Wing Watch is that they give us a glimpse into what these loons say when they think only their fellow travelers are listening.

  • countryboy

Frankly, I wouldn’t mind giving Texas back to Mexico

  • Al Dente

    countryboy @5

If Franks is a typical Arizona inhabitant then the Mexicans can have that place as well.

  • JustaTech

“if Al Qaeda took Texas”; how could you tell?

    (I kid, I kid.)

  • steve84

Since when do Texans want anything to do with the evil federal government? It wants to be its own country. The will have to do with the National Guard and their so-called “State Defense Force”.

  • AndrewD

@5 and @6 What has Mexico and the Mexicans done to you to deserve such a fate?

  • noastronomer

I gotta say that I did, briefly, consider the advantages of handing Texas over. Then I realized that we’d have to re-number the interstates, so no.

  • abb3w

I suspect the degree of concern would depend in part on whether or not there are any nukes left at Dyess Air Force Base.

  • John Pieret

I’d let Texas go but only if they took Louisiana (the parts not named “New Orleans”), Mississippi and Alabama with them.

  • Alverant

Doesn’t Texas have a lot of guns and people whining about the big bad government? You’d think Texas would be able to take care of itself if an actually oppressive government tried to take over. But hey, the let Perry get away with some theocratic shit.

  • dshetty

Obama Wouldn’t Care if Terrorists Take Texas

Democrats do care that Republicans have taken Texas

  • cptdoom

@Alverant #13 Texas also has the largest military base in the Western world – Ft. Hood. I’m sure all those good American soldiers would sit idly by during an invasion.

  • cptdoom

Oh and if this woman had been condemned for marrying a Hindu, FRC and their fellow travelers wouldn’t give a flaming session of intercourse.

  • D Carter

If you’ve seen the latest Open Carry incident in Ft Worth, you know the terrorists are already taking Texas.

  • Pierce R. Butler

Last time I checked, terrorists took over Texas in 1994.

  • Jared Ragland

    countryboy @5:

We fought one war to steal Texas from Mexico. I’m fairly sure it would also require a war to make them take Texas back.

  • otrame

People, it’s not that I don’t appreciate your…humor. You are all very funny. But honestly, there are many many Texans who are not gunhuggers. We are not all related, genetically or spiritually to Mr. Gohmert. 40% of Texans voted for Obama. We have chance to turn it purple in the next election, if we can get people to VOTE.

Shortly after 9/11 Texas Monthly published an article about how a similar attack could have done more economic damage and killed 100,000 people if it had been done against the Houston Ship Channel, which is the largest concentration of nasty chemicals anywhere in a heavily populated area of the US. The Bush administration’s response was to remove the Air National Guard F-16’s at Ellington in 2004. Now all there is at Ellington are a few NASA T-38’s, the Vomit Comet, and a couple of 747’s that carry NASA test equipment.

W allowed the most important strategic target in Texas to go without air defense.

  • jeroenmetselaar

But wait, what? I though republican Texans *wanted* to secede from the US.

  • http://dontlinkmebro F [i’m not here, i’m gone]

Are these guys still under the impression that Al Qaeda is some kind of state with a military? The only way Al Qaeda could “take” Texas is if enough Texans went Taliban or joined Al Qaeda. Interesting that this is what Franks is worried about.

Franks: “We might not get much help from the Federal Government anyways.”

I thought you guys didn’t want help from the—never mind. Just…never mind.

How do these people keep getting elected?

Good luck to you and all well-meaning Texans!

  • Ichthyic

Franks responded that Texans “might not get much help from the federal government, from this administration anyway.”

well, that would only be by Texas’ own choice…

    http://www.star-telegram.com/2013/09/26/5196364/sebelius-says-texas-losing-79.html

OTOH, that is still only a fraction of the amount of money the federal government DOES pump into Texas every year, whether via FEMA (Wildfires; drought mitigation), aside from regular infrastructure issues like federal highways, courts, and thousands of other things.

this fiction that the “feds” exist outside of the states is just…. ludicrous.

WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK THERE EVEN IS A HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES???

how are people so fucking stupid? how?

  • dingojack

OK I had to check. Over the period 2003-13, Texas received an average of $1.0466 for every dollar received from the Federal Government. The worst year was 2010 at $1.48, the best 2007 at $0.40*. Texas cost the Feds less than it raised as taxes 36.4% of the time.

    Dingo

    ——–

The overall worst was South Carolina with $2.93 as an average (low: 2007 $0.93. high: 2010 $7.88).

The overall best was Minnesota with $0.43 as an average (low: 2007 $0.21. high 2012 $0.56).

As an average, 24 states took more money than it gave (low: 2007 6 states. high 2012 36 states).

On average the federal government paid out $1.03 for each dollar of revenue (low: 2007 $0.46. high: 2012 $1.40)

9 states have cost the Federal Government less than receipts 11 times in 11 years and 5 states have always cost more than revenues. On average they have cost more than receipts 50.8% of the time.
