Every year in June my friends at Equality Michigan put on the Motor City Pride event. Unfortunately, this year’s rally was marked by a brutal attack by as many as 8 men on one gay man near the rally site, which was caught on video.
The beating of a gay man was caught on tape at Detroit’s Motor City Pride, a gay and lesbian friendly event, held over the weekend.
The video shows 20-year-old Christin Howard, a gay man, fighting off attackers Sunday along Detroit’s Riverwalk as the gay pride festival happened in nearby Hart Plaza.
Howard says five to eight men attacked him. At one point, all the young men joined in on the attack as Christin was on the ground, helpless.
Howard says the attack was unprovoked and that he was getting a picture taken with a friend when the young men started circling, commenting on his long hair, calling him homophobic slurs and threatening violence.
“Then somebody said they had a gun,” said Christin.
It’s incredibly sad and infuriating that we still live in a society where this sort of thing happens.
