ADL Condemns Perkins for Holocaust Comparisons

The Anti-Defamation League is condemning the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins for making an offensive and ludicrous comparison between forbidding discrimination against gay people and the Holocaust that killed millions of Jews and many other groups.

Tony Perkins’ invocation of the Holocaust in his statement referring to a judge’s finding that a baker unlawfully discriminated against gay customers is offensive and inappropriate.

There is no comparison between contemporary American political issues and the actions of Hitler’s regime during the Holocaust. Such inappropriate analogies only serve to trivialize the Holocaust and are deeply offensive to Jews and other survivors, as well as those Americans who fought valiantly against the Nazis in World War II.

We urge Perkins to apologize and to refrain from using Holocaust imagery to make his point.

Perkins said that because some states will not allow Christian-owned businesses to discriminate against gay people, the government would soon “start rolling out the boxcars to start hauling off Christians.” Of course, Christian right leaders make similar comparisons literally on a daily basis.

Don’t let those Liberbulls intimidate you, Tony! This is exactly how it went don in Nazi Germany! First they ask you to apologize, then it’s concentration camps!

Including, obviously, gay people. If there’s an analogy with Nazism to be made Perkins isn’t on the side he thinks he is.

First they came for the fascists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a fascist.

Then they came for the racists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a racist.

Then they came for the misogynists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a mysogynist.

Then they came for the homophobes — and there was no one left to speak for me.

As a friend of mine said about the obsessive need for the religious right to fantasize about being persecuted, particularly Holocaust fantasizes, “These people’s chief injury is the oppressive lack of persecution.”

The historical ignorance of these people is just stunning. By the conservative estimates I’ve seen, ~10,000 gay people were brutally murdered in the camps, not including whatever percentage of the 6 million Jews who happened to be gay. The only reason there weren’t more was because it was a concealable trait. The Nazis’ ideologies didn’t pop out of nowhere; they were amplifications of existing prejudices, and Mr. Perkins is most definitely a modern carrier, so to speak.

It’s all Holocaust appropriation and fatwa envy with these guys.

Well, the ADF are still ignorant buffoons, but kudos to them for calling out ridiculous bullshit like this. Maybe Perkins can get his gang to snipe back at ADF, and we can watch the American evangelical movement eat itself. If this happens, invest heavily in popcorn futures.

and finally, there was peace and quiet and happy people, just getting on with their lives.

I, for one, am looking forward to being able to order lampshades made from the skin of Christians at IKEA. Let the oppressive regime of the uber gays begin.

  • dingojack

lorn – human skin lampshades? At IKEA?!?

    Not very fabulous.

Perkins must be shaking in his boots…

The audience that he spouts such mendacious trash at….is not likely to be the same audience that would be bothered about, or even be aware of, the Anti-Defamation League unless they were ruling in their favour…all other statements are ignored as per tradition.

At least that would be the Perkins calculation.

And in that you get a clue as to why these ass foaming gutter rats can and do spout such claptrap…they know the audience intended to receive their gobbets of ‘wisdom’ rarely is ever check or listen to the counter argument.

And the main media ignores their trash let alone challenge it, cos the main media comprises an awful lot of jeebus fans, and the main media preach their version to an awful lot of jeebus fans and they have no intentions of rising the lava in politicians and the various theocratic themed administrations in the country.

The calculation being all xtians are bro’s under the skin whatever their insanity.

    Christian soap …

Made with real Christians washed in the blood of the redeemer. New and improved … fortified with creationists true-believers and the holy spirit. Strong enough for a heathen, but gentle enough for the lamb of God…

Christian soap … salvation for the unwashed masses.

@7, Artor: What’s an “ADF”? And why are they ignorant buffoons?
