Republican voters in Anne Arundel County, Maryland have officially nominated a Christian Reconstructionist, secessionist and neo-Confederate as their candidate for the county council. It was a narrow victory, only 38 votes, which is why it wasn’t certified until now even though the vote was taken a couple weeks ago. The Annapolis Capital Gazette is not impressed.
Anyone who thinks we’re being unfair can go to the website of the Institute on the Constitution (www.theamericanview.com), the Pasadena-based organization founded by Peroutka, and start reading his columns.
There’s the recent one in which the lawyer and former Constitution Party presidential candidate asks “whether the people of Maryland may be justified in reaching the conclusion that what we call our ‘General Assembly’ is no longer a valid legislative body.” That’s because it has transgressed against God’s laws by passing the rain tax, legislation legitimizing same-sex marriage, a measure to protect the transgendered from discrimination, a gun-control bill, and so on…
There’s the one in which he declares “God’s word — the Bible — is the ultimate lawbook and the ultimate guide for all actions of civil government at all levels” — including, presumably, the County Council…
If this isn’t enough, peruse the website of the League of the South (dixienet.org), an organization of which Peroutka, by his statement, is a proud member. The current president declares on the website that “The League of the South is a Southern Nationalist organization whose ultimate goal is a free and independent Southern republic.”
Peroutka told voters the truth when he stressed that he was against taxes and stormwater fees. He didn’t stress that he’s also a theocrat and secessionist who thinks it would be great if local officials refused to uphold state laws.
Peroutka’s views are hardly a secret, but they voted for him anyway.
