Staver: America No Longer ‘Shining City on a Hill’

Mat Staver, the dumbest lawyer in America not named Larry Klayman, is very disappointed that America is starting to treat gay people like human beings with equal rights. Borrowing from Reagan and John Winthrop before him, he says we’re no longer that “shining city on a hill” for the rest of the world to emulate.

Barber: We were deeply involved and had a hand in helping to reverse Croatia’s harmful sex education policies and supported Croatia’s constitutional amendment affirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and Lord willing, this will set a trend in nations around the world.

Staver: Yeah, it will. And it looks like some of the world, a lot of the world, is going the opposite way that America is. America used to be the shining city on the hill, the example for other nations to follow. Now it’s the example of what not to follow. And other nations around the world are affirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman, while America is rejecting it. It’s as ridiculous as rejecting the laws of gravity. But some judges think they have the audacity and the arrogance to do just that.

Quite the opposite is true, of course. We are finally getting around to correcting the enormous injustice that has been done to gay people, which is exactly why Staver is so upset about it. He’s on the side of injustice, just like his mythical god has always been.

Well, we’re looking forward to the day you two Mutts Mats quit the US for one of those new shining cities on a hill. Uganda might just fit the bill. But maybe not Nigeria … what with Ebola and its less than sophisticated medical facilities.

  • busterggi

Wrong, stupid and bigoted – nicely done guys!

  • jnorris

What John Pieret said, I think Mr Staver’s new shining city is in Uganda.

and Lord willing, this will set a trend in nations around the world.

Somehow I don’t think the lord is willing, he’s more asleep at the wheel as his clown car gracefully arcs out into open space after just leaving the edge of a cliff.

“Mat Staver, the dumbest lawyer in America not named Larry Klayman…”

    Wouldn’t that be Orly Taitz?

  • matty1

I don’t know about Staver’s own views but Uganda is surely too unheartlandishly hued for many wing nuts. How about Russia?

But some judges think they have the audacity and the arrogance to do just that.

Um. Whatever “audacity” and “arrogance” are required to rule that marriage statutes as applied are unconstitutional if they exclude persons from marrying based on gender, it’s weird to say that some judges “think” they have that.

The rulings actually exist. They do have those required levels of audacity and arrogance, however minimal they may be.

Makes you realize just how far these folks have gone to confuse “belief” with “evidence”.

    had that discussion before.

Does he wonder why none of the nations continuing to ban same sex marriage are nations that meet acceptable standards of societal health? Yes, if we could only be more like f-ing Croatia. ISIS! Now there’s a group with their shit together, according to the American Right Wing.

  • Pierce R. Butler

Just what did those bastards do to Croatia?

Last I heard, the Catholics still get just about anything they want in that sunny, cursed, country.

  • StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!

Borrowing from Reagan and John Winthrop before him, he says we’re no longer that “shining city on a hill” for the rest of the world to emulate.

Well, for starters, America has never been a city at all – instead its been a whole bunch of disparate and often arguingand fighting colonies then states spanning about a third of the North American continent!

(Yeah, its a metaphor I know. Still.)

Then, secondly, Croatia’s sexed policy? Huh? That’s a new one to me, whatever is he on about? Okay, I’m just an Aussie but really how many folks over in the States even among his own listeners /viewers would be aware of what he’s referring to there?

(As for “Croatia’s constitutional amendment affirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman,..” that’s not atypical sadly many places including to its shame my own nation of Oz have this policy although hopefully not for too much longer given the shift in socio-cultural attitudes and public opinion.)

Thirdly, yeah, what a bigoted warped and ugly medieval mindset these Staver and Barber fools have!

PS. The no spacing visible in preview issue is still here I see. Sigh.)

“Activist judges” in Uganda have in fact struck down the outrageously bigoted Gays (Unlimited Persecution Of) Bill, on technical grounds.

  • raym

    He wasn’t entirely wrong:

America used to be the shining city on the hill, the example for other nations to follow. Now it’s the example of what not to follow.

I’m sure he must be referring to torture, death penalty, lack of universal health care. Yes, that must be it…
