Allen West’s Amazing Flip-Flop on Impeachment

Add Allen West to the chorus of Republicans falsely claiming that that whole impeachment thing is coming from Democrats. What makes this one especially amusing is that West has been sending out fundraising emails for months asking people to send him money to advance the cause of impeachment. But now he’s telling his followers not to fall for the impeachment trap:

You just have to hand it to the Democrats. They are not incompetent – evil, yes — but not incompetent. They’ve now successfully made the word “impeachment” verboten in America. In fact, they’ve managed to turn it into political heyday as they celebrate fundraising records based on generating fear among their base over something that’s not happening…

Do not take the bait from Obama and the Democrats, even though we all know his unilateral negotiations with a terrorist organization to release five senior members of the Taliban truly represent a high crime and misdemeanor.

But here’s what he’s been saying for months:

West’s warning about the dangers of impeachment stand in stark contrast to what he’s been saying on the issue for months. In June, following the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, West called on the House of Representatives to “draft articles of impeachment as no one is above the law in America.”

While he now claims impeachment is “not happening,” fundraising emails he recently sent to his followers struck a decidedly different note. For example, on July 10, after fellow Fox News contributor Sarah Palin joined the conservative calls for impeachment, West sent out an email soliciting “emergency contribution[s]” to help his PAC distribute a survey asking people whether the House should impeach the president. According to West, Palin’s support for impeachment was evidence “This movement is far from over….it’s gaining speed!” He also described impeachment as a “growing movement” and a “huge grassroots movement.”

On June 28, West asked for “emergency donation[s]” to his PAC, telling subscribers, “the time has come to hold [Obama] accountable.” West pointed to House Speaker John Boehner’s lawsuit targeting the president as the “initial steps that I believe will lead to impeachment.”

In a June 19 email to subscribers with the subject line, “Breaking- Enough votes to impeach Obama?”, West touted comments from Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) claiming the House “probably” had enough votes to impeach the president. Once again asking for an “emergency donation,” West explained, “Now – more than ever – we need to get the Guardian Fund’s impeachment survey into the hands of every conservative in America.”

Hey, whatever works, right? Consistency and reality matter not.

The next step: asking for “emergency donation[s]” to his PAC, telling subscribers, “the time has come to quash all the Democratic rumors that Republicans want to impeach the President!”

  • tsig

Well they were for impeachment before they were against impeachment.

I doubt if any of his supporters will notice since their head has been up his ass so long.

  • Chiroptera

I think this is all a plot by the Democrats to make is seem that the Republicans don’t really want to impeach Obama when he really should be impeached.

  • Loqi

What they say about impeachment is irrelevant. “Impeachment” is a buzzword. They don’t know how to use it in a sentence. They just know that if they that magic word, people send them money.

What a devious plot by Obama. He should be impeached over this.

  • cynix

Three amazing things. (1) His devoted followers will believe his latest BS. (2) they will forget his earlier support for impeachment and (3) Allan West will believe both 1 and 2.

The man is an embarrassment to evolution.

All this impeachment nonsense is just a distraction from the IRS scandal, which was itself a distraction from Benghazi. Also, BENGHAZI!!!!!1111

    (And socialism!!)

Isn’t this just rank sociopathy? I’m really beginning to think that this is all that’s going on with these people. Breathtaking lack of shame and inability to set longterm strategies are two of the components of sociopathy.

  • Artor

Well, once you’ve run everyone who is remotely sane from your party, you can get away with blatantly self-contradictory bullshit like this with the confidence that the deluded idiots who remain will never notice.

we all know his unilateral negotiations with a terrorist organization to release five senior members of the Taliban truly represent a high crime and misdemeanor.

A high crime and misdemeanor? What?

  • anubisprime

Quite a funny spectacle watching the chronically halfwitted…try and talk themselves out from under another one of their massive strokes of halfwittedness!…just like crashing the whole government when they managed to nearly bankrupt America, stroke of pure malevolent genius that one considering the global economy.

  • dugglebogey

He apparently doesn’t know the meaning of the words “unilateral” or “misdemeanor.”

  • howardhershey

To say he flip-flops is an understatement. He spins.

  • coffeehound

    Modus @5,

What a devious plot by Obama. He should be impeached over this.

*eye squint* Hmm. Just what a Democrat WOULD say.

As long as the money is flowing these people will never change, only when reality comes crashing down do they see any of it. I wonder though is it possible that people like this could be held accountable, financially speaking?

I know false advertisement is illegal.

It would be interesting if in this case the supporters of impeachment went after him for their donations, because of his recent statements.

    TCC @ 10,

You know, the thing he did that was similar to what Bush did that time when it was called heroic…..or the thing that Ollie North did……or the thing that Reagan did but didn’t remember….or the things done by Richard Secord, Dick Cheney, Doug Feith, Elliot Abrams, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Scooter Libby, ( you got a week or so?)…..

  • illdoittomorrow

    Dugglebogey, @ 12:

He doesn’t seem to get “heyday’, either, among other things. It’s almost as if he doesn’t understand language or how to use it.

  • grumpyoldfart

You Americans are funny little buggers sometimes.

  • Ichthyic

A high crime and misdemeanor? What?

US Constitution, Art. II Sec. 4, “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors”.

that’s where it comes from, though this particular elected official really hasn’t got a clue based on how he misused the phrase.

  • Ichthyic

…and if you’re curious where the phrase used in the constitution came from….

At this point it should be obvious that West – like Palin, Santorum. Jones, Coulter et al – is simply working a grift. They are consciously and deliberately telling the rubes whatever lies will open up the cheque book.

Curiously though, many people to whom this IS obvious will absolutely reject the idea that Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are doing the exact same thing.

  • dingojack

In fact, they’ve managed to turn it into political heyday as they celebrate fundraising records based on generating fear among their base over something that’s not happening…

That’s gotta be worth at least a nomination for a Bryan Fischer Award.

  • Ichthyic

    Elizabeth Warren is a grifter.

    that’s a new one.

    run along Ian.

TCC: A high crime and misdemeanor? What?

    (Emphasis added.)

    Easy-peasy for a president who’s both a Marxist and a Muslim simultaneously.

Iangould: Curiously though, many people to whom this IS obvious will absolutely reject the idea that Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are doing the exact same thing.

Not exactly: the things Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are warning us about are actually happening or impending.
