Sorbo Goes on Wiles’ Show

Shitty actor and semi-professional idiot Kevin Sorbo is very busy promoting the DVD of God’s Not Dead and there is apparently no limits at all on the shows he will go on to do that. He went on Rick Wiles’ TruNews radio show, which is about the same as going on a KKK show, and spewed some serious stupid.

Sorbo said he doesn’t understand why atheists are so “filled with just hatred and anger,” saying that he feels sorry for them but also can’t help but laugh at them for spending “so much time ranting and raving about something that they don’t believe in.”

Wiles agreed, saying that he doesn’t “believe in the Tooth Fairy but I don’t spend all my time from trying to stop people from believing in the Tooth Fairy.”

Of course, one could just as well make the same point in response to Sorbo and Wiles, noting that while they don’t believe in atheism, they sure do seem to be spending a lot of time ranting and raving about it.

In the end, both Wiles and Sorbo agreed that the real reason atheists are so angry is because, deep down, they know that God exists.

“The truth is,” Wiles said, “they know he exists and they hate him. That’s what it’s all about.”

“That is exactly what it is,” Sorbo responded. “I know these guys must believe in something, otherwise they wouldn’t get so angry about it and they don’t like the fact that there is a higher power out there that is judging how they live their life.”

Don’t you love being told what you believe and why you believe it by bigots and assholes? Isn’t it wonderful?

Weird that it never occurs to them that it is quite possible to hate a fictional character. Especially someone who plays a fictional character that the audience is supposed to dislike. In the very movie they’re talking about.

  • raven

Sorbo said a lot of other really stupid and vicious things on Wile’s show, especially about atheists.

    1. It’s quite clear he hates atheists.

    2. It was also clear he lies a lot and doesn’t have very good judgement. Not everyone in Hollywood is an Oogedy Boogedy fundie xian. There are going to be a lot of seculars, No Religions, Mainliners, Catholics, and Jews.

The same goes for his potential audience. Fundies are maybe 30% and the Harris poll has all xians at 68%.

    3. Kevin Sorbo has typecast himself as a dumb and vicious fundie xian. He may well spend the rest of his career under their rocks making simple minded xian hate and propaganda films.

HItchen’s Rule. Assertion without proof or data. Standard fundie god babble.

    1. The truth is, Sorbo, Wiles, the Pope, and all xians are atheists. There are thousands of gods. They don’t believe in any of them except the 4 or 5 xian ones (god, jesus, the Spook, satan, Mary).

We just don’t believe in 0.4% more.

    2. And a lot of xians don’t really believe in god. And there is data on this point. It’s not just as assertion or pretend mind reading.

    3. The box checkers. the Ipso Mori poll, the Barna poll.

    4. The tribalists. For a lot of fundies, it is just part of their package of rightwing extremist politics, racism, and assorted fears and hates.

I noticed it myself but so have lots of other people. There are actually academic philosophers studying this, called meta-atheism.

I dont know what you guys are all on about. Hercules hit the nail on the head. I for one am very angry at the god I dont believe exists. He is very astute for noticing. Admit it guys and gals.

Wiles agreed, saying that he doesn’t “believe in the Tooth Fairy but I don’t spend all my time from trying to stop people from believing in the Tooth Fairy.”

Just as soon as the Tooth Fairyists start passing laws denying equal rights to non-Tooth Fairyists, we atheists, agnostics, humanists and secularists of all flavors will start to rail against them too … though we won’t give a shit if they want to continue believing in the Tooth Fairy, though some of us might offer them reasons not to, which they are free to ignore.

Or when Tooth Fairyism leads people to other incorrect beliefs about the real world, beliefs that lead them to advocate for political or social policies that are ineffective or harmful.

    Speak for yourself.

With thousands of gods, anyone can make up their own pantheon.

I’m a big fan of Isis, Gaia, Bast, Sophia, Athena, Frigga, and Thor myself.

Hey Sorbo, – If there were laws passed that required you to allow your children to be forced to worship the Easter Bunny, would you be more or less likely to get upset about it?

Shitty actor and semi-professional idiot Kevin Sorbo…

When religious apologists claim atheists are all nasty arseholes, they can point to this sort of shit as proof. Real nice.

  • Chiroptera

    Shitty actor…

I’ve seen a couple of episodes of Andromeda. True, I didn’t see great feats of thespian ability, but I didn’t think Sorbo was so bad as to call his acting “shitty.” But I haven’t seen any of his other work, so maybe.

    …and semi-professional idiot….

Yeah, he may be making some money off being an idiot. Thems the breaks.

Holms “When religious apologists claim atheists are all nasty arseholes, they can point to this sort of shit as proof.”

To be fair, some will make that claim that even without the quote. They have before. And will again.

    “Real nice.”

Nice doesn’t win football games. Not even in the Nice Football League. And definitely not in the Culture War, where “nice” is “be silent” (at least for “our” side). That’s not nice. That’s stupid.

In any event, even in NiceWorld (one that lacks that quote) they’d still find something to clutch their pearls over. (“Did you know that Christopher Hitchens smoked and drank?” [runs to fainting couch])

  • Kevin Kehres

    @12…your concern is noted.

  • eric

@13 – I generally agree with you about his earlier TV work, but Kull the Conquorer was bad. Overall…there are certainly worse B-movies and worse B-actors (cough Sharknado cough).

Still, acting ability isn’t really the point. Its the fact that he’s now implying some expertise on the subject of atheism because he happened to play an atheist (scripted by a fundie) in a movie. Mr. Sorbo, you’re an actor. Your skill at theology is about the same as George Clooney’s skills as an astronaut or Patrick Dempsy’s skill at surgery.

Raven @3 – some conservative actors have the same persecution complex that non-acting Christians have, that they are going to lose jobs because of their conservatism. Adam Baldwin makes Kevin Sorbo look like a godless communist but he still keeps getting work. But at least Sorbo now has an excuse other than his limited range if he doesn’t get many roles.

What does make me somewhat angry is that Sorbo gets to say these things in settings where no one will challenge him on it. He won’t actually sit down with atheists from all walks of life, listen to what they have to say, and then develop an informed opinion. Instead, he’ll just spout lies and misinformation about atheists in softball interviews with fellow likeminded Christians.

  • Holms

To be fair, some will make that claim that even without the quote. They have before. And will again.

They say it because it is warranted. However, even if they flat out lied, you are simply saying that if we are damned either way, we might as well make the accusation come true and thus genuinely deserve it. I can’t see the point in such reasoning.

  • raven

    That is a hard one.

I thought he didn’t believe in atheists? Why does he hate us so much if he doesn’t believe in us?

  • sinned34

To be fair, I’ve heard a handful of atheists make the same claim about religious people; that deep down they know there really isn’t a god.

Granted, they don’t tend to get the opportunity to make 3rd rate movies and travel around spouting their nonsense unchallenged in interviews. And I’ve even seen them get slapped down by fellow atheists for saying stuff like that. I’ve never heard one Christian admonish another for claiming atheists actually do believe in god in their “heart of hearts”.

    …Maybe Heddle.

Of course being silent would be stupid, but I never suggested that. For that matter, I also didn’t suggest that we be ‘nice’ as such, but simply ‘not abusive’.

    That is a hard one.

    Xian??? Holms???

Er, I guess I’d go with ‘hypocrite’ yeah?

I have more faith in Hercules than I do in Sorbo. Lots of centuries of documentation about the former, seems to me the later is just someone putting on an act.

  • Michael Heath

“That is exactly what it is,” Sorbo responded. “I know these guys must believe in something,

A nice illustration on why I think critical thinkers should abandon the words belief and believe when referring to the type of fact-based conclusions they make.

I think we should also be far more aggressive in criticizing and ridiculing faith. Such thinking can’t withstand any credible scrutiny, it’s a juvenile thinking defect; and yet it infects even liberals in the U.S., e.g., popular media.

  • raven

To be fair, I’ve heard a handful of atheists make the same claim about religious people; that deep down they know there really isn’t a god.

    I’m one!!! Me!!!! Right here!!!!

Actually, it wasn’t me. It was…census xians. Reported by polling firm Ipso Mori and Richard Dawkins.

And it isn’t just a claim. It’s a conclusion from data. For fans of the fact driven life:

    The Torygraph:

    http:// www .telegraph .co. uk/news/religion/9738031/Richard-Dawkins-Census-shows-that-Christianity-in-Britain-is-on-the-way-out.html

Only 32 per cent of the census “Christians” believe in the resurrection of Jesus. Only 35 per cent could pick out the correct answer to “What is the first book of the New Testament?” when given a 4-way choice of Matthew, Genesis, Acts, Psalms. When asked why they had ticked the Christian box, only 28 per cent of those who did so said it was because they believe the teachings of Christianity. The most popular answer to that question was, “I like to think of myself as a good person.” What? You ticked the Christian box because you like to think of yourself as a good person? Are you serious? Do you think atheists, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists don’t think of themselves

The short version. Only 32 per cent of the census “Christians” believe in the resurrection of Jesus.

  • raven

    The TL:DR version of #30.

    1. Only 32 per cent of the census “Christians” believe in the resurrection of Jesus.

Sure this is from the UK. It isn’t goint to be too different in the USA.

    2. Barna, a fundie pollster, found the same thing in the USA. They see 37% of the US population as post-xians.

    3. “Fundie xianity is just right wing extremist politics with a few crosses stuck on for show. The important part is the right wing extremist politics. Makes sense, while god and heaven probably don’t exist, politics definitely does exist and effects us all.”

    My observation repeated many times.

Others have noticed this. I was reading a philosophy anthology and one academic had a long article on what he called meta-atheism. This isn’t as well documented but chances are good that a lot of fundie xians are just tribalists. They could care less about what xianity really teaches, which matters so little they have no idea of anyway.

This was well demonstrated with the child refugees from central America. The ones calling them Ebola ridden, crypto Moslem Jihadists were all…fundie xians.
