Bigots: Satan Behind Opposition to Totalitarian Ugandan Law

Bryan Fischer had Ugandan evangelist Troy Smith on his radio show and Smith told Fischer that the only reason anyone could possibly oppose the Ugandan law that puts gay people in prison for life is because they’re being controlled by Satan. Because that’s totally reasonable.

Fischer, never the one to pass up an opportunity to talk about gay people, asked Smith about his views on Uganda’s draconian Anti-Homosexuality Act, a law that Fischer said “honors God’s standard of sexuality.”

Smith said he shared Fischer’s support for the law, adding that the anti-gay law’s opponents are motivated by the Devil: “I believe that not only did Heaven notice but Hell noticed when they made that stance and that dedication and I think they were strategically zeroed-in on to say, ‘You’re really serious about this? We’re going to take you to task.’ I’m talking about the forces of darkness, of course, using human agents here.”

Those dingbats think Satan is behind everything when in fact it is the Patriarchy.

From my personal experience, the “blinded by Satan” assertion is a well-established attribute within conservative Christianity. It’s not merely expressed by those we consider extreme even within conservative Christianity.

I’ve been accused of such several times. In all instances I was making a case where I perceived the other party realized they had no rational rebuttal. But being Bible-believing Christians, they certainly were not going to adapt to a defensible position and therefore, the “you’re blinded by Satan” claim.

    @ Michael Heath

Yes, it’s a debate-ending tactic. Short-hand for “This is going in an uncomfortable direction, so shut up!” c.f. “The Bible says..” or “My pastor told me…”

And if it isn’t “you’re blinded by Satan,” it’s “that’s what the lame stream media wants you to believe, sheeple.”

Makes sense to me. I’ve always felt that Satan was a good guy ever since Ricardo Montalban quoted him at the end of that Star Trek episode.

That guy is making awful arguments. But I am concerned that I only think that b/c Satan made me think that.

Fischer: “‘You’re really serious about this? We’re going to take you to task.”

I’m betting ‘taking to task’ (ie getting a good talking to) is going to be PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS in the next show, any takers?

MH (#2) – I prefer to be Blinded by Science.

Chiroptera #5 – who knew that Captain Ahab was really Satan? :)

You have to hand it to him, he’s discovered an excellent strategy for driving young people away from the church. Sometimes the best thing we can do is just let our opponents speak. Their mouth does our recruiting for us.

Gosh, it couldn’t possibly be that people oppose these laws because they’re inhumane. Nope, not at all. Must be someone else’s fault that they’re not popular. Can we blame it on the gays? Possibly. Liberals? That sounds good. How about Satan? Yay! We’ve got a winner!
