The Myth of the Islamic Prayer Rug at the Border

Once a myth enters right wing lore, it never dies. It will be repeated over and over again no matter how thoroughly it’s been debunked because they know their target audience ultimately doesn’t really care much about what is true. That’s why they’re still claiming that an Islamic prayer rug was found at the border, proving that terrorists are sneaking in, most recently at the Values Voters Summit.

In a speech to the Values Voter Summit, Dewhurst followed Cruz by attacking abortion rights and immigration reform. Dewhurst said President Obama “literally opened up the red carpet” for a “tsunami of unaccompanied children” with an immigration law signed in 2008, the year before Obama became president.

“If we don’t stop the bad guys at the border, they’re going to be in your hometown tomorrow,” he said.

He later claimed that prayer rugs found in Texas are proof that ISIS members may be crossing the southern border to “mobilize terrorist Islam against the United States.”

That “Islamic prayer rug” was, in fact, an Adidas soccer jersey. Seriously, do they think that devout Muslims are in the habit of throwing prayer rugs away?

Is one of the premises that there couldn’t possibly be any Muslims in Texas near the border unless they came in from the Mexico side?

Also found along Texas border: an old couch – proof that Latin Immigrants are lazy.

“If we don’t stop the bad guys at the border, they’re going to be in your hometown tomorrow,”

The 9/11 bad guys all entered legally. They don’t need mexican coyotes, and frankly I can’t imagine some super-secret terrorist organization trusting a mexican cartel. Imagine (from the terrorist’s perspective) the risk of blackmail you’re taking in doing that.

If it supports what they want to believe, that’s truthiness enough.*

Of course the real problem with this story is the assumption the only reason a Muslim would sneak into the US is to blow up something. They seem to think no Muslim will sneak into the country for the same reason anyone else sneaks into the US, which is to work at a crappy, low paying job that is still better than whatever work they could find back home.

Remember when a soccer jersey at the border would get them frothing at the mouth about immoral, soccer-loving illegal immigrants? Those were the days.

It’s worth reminding these not-anti-Muslim bigots that every one of these “proofs of ISIS” are, at the most generous, proofs of Muslims, 99% of which are not terrorists. Using their reasoning, I could argue that my neighborhood is being invaded by gangs because I found a pair of basketball sneakers on the street.

Muslims, 99% of which are not terrorists – scienceavenger@7

OK, I realise that “99%” is not always meant literally, but there are around 1.6 billion Muslims in the world (admittedly, this includes children, not sure what the firgure for adults would be). Do you think there are anywhere near 16 million terrorists among them?

I suppose it was found near a “FEMA concentration camp” that was actually an abandoned railroad station.

@9 Jesus, pedant much? I just didn’t feel like messing with decimals, but since what I really had in mind was “Muslims sympathetic to Talibanish viewpoints”, perhaps that makes it better? I just yanked the figure out of my ass to illustrate a much more worthy point anyway, so I think we should argue about this some more.

Personally I’m far more terrified of an army of soccer fans sneaking in, and ending our sporting way of life: no more scoring, no more deep strategy, and replacing brain-damaging collisions with childish wailing and flopping about over what your average MMA fighter would consider a nice scratch.

    AAAAAUUUUUGGGGHHHHH!

I’m still wondering how people like Dewhurst think that ISIS members magically transport themselves across the Atlantic, why they would stop first in Mexico, and why they would bother doing so when they are already at war right on their own turf.

This is almost literally boogyman under the bed stuff.
