Indian Govt. Official Blames Atheists for Flooding

We’re used to Christian wingnuts in this country declaring that every natural disaster is the fault of gays or abortion or whatever their current bugaboo du jour is. But in India, an actual government minister is blaming deadly flooding last year on atheists shitting — literally — near a shrine.

India’s water resources minister, Uma Bharti, recently said the underlying cause of the catastrophic floods that hit North India in 2013 was atheists defecating near the holy shrine at Kedarnath, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites, that draw thousands of devotees each year.

The natural disaster, which was dubbed as ‘Himalayan Tsunami’ by the media, killed more than 6,000 people, most of whom lived in the state of Uttarakhand. Landslides and flash floods that accompanied the heavy downpour also happened to devastate Kedarnath, an ancient pilgrimage site for Hindus. Not only did thousands of pilgrims lose their lives during the catastrophe, the entire town surrounding the temple found itself submerged underwater for weeks.

While discussing details about the temple’s reconstruction, Bharti told scientists at Dehradun’s Himalayan Institute of Glaciology and Forest Research that the floods were a result of God’s wrath after atheists defecated near the holy shrine for years.

Bharti, like the newly elected prime minister of India, is a Hindu nationalist. Any time you see any religious adherent followed by “nationalist” you should be very concerned.

Well, at least their god has better aim than Yahweh. Shit near a temple, get flooded near the temple. Simple sanitation service…if perhaps a bit too exuberant.

Had it been Yahweh, he would have flooded Tibet.

There is a church down the street from me. Should I be worried when I go to the bathroom now?

Look, when the toilet is “wherever you are”, and there’s 800M people, then pretty much by definition a clog is going to be big.

Plus, they ate all that Indian food.

So seems god took his own good time getting the ‘ump with the lavatorial arrangements, so what was he up to during all those years that atheists were shitting near a shrine…busy elsewhere?

The whole tale stinks higher then the shrine at midday!

Maybe God just wants you to put indoor plumbing at the shrine.

Maybe God is an atheist as well and flushed after relieving herself near the shrine.

Back in the 60s I often used the term “powerful shit” but this wasn’t what I had in mind.

Narendra Modi is aware of the problem. One of the planks in his winning platform was installing millions of toilets. Somehow I think there will still be floods, but there will be way fewer parasites.

Funny, I keep reading the headline as “Indiana Govt. Official Blames Atheists for Flooding.”

I find it more incredible to read it’s an Indian official since the US is a far more primitive society than India. Or so I thought.

A group, in this case atheists, show up, overload the local plumbing and the sewers back up.

I must ask? What is the minimum safe distance at which my thunder poops can summon the wrath of god and kill 6000 people?

Further proof that the problem isn’t Islam, Hinduism or Christianity. It’s ignorance, fear bigotry and leaders who either subscribe to them or seek to exploit them

See also avowedly atheist Marxist dictatorships and aggressive secularists like al-Sisi who justify censorship, torture extrjudicial kilings and detention without trial on the grounds that they have to stop religious extremists imposing – censorship, torture, extra judicial killings and detention without trial

“… al-Sisi who justify censorship, torture extrjudicial kilings and detention without trial on the grounds that they have to stop religious extremists imposing – censorship, torture, extra judicial killings and detention without trial…”

Just for shits-and-giggles, re-read the quote above, but replace ‘al-Sisi’ with ‘Obama’ or ‘Bush’.

So thousands of devotees* visit the shrine every year, nada. A handful of curious atheists* visit the shrine — massive flooding (due to blocked drains). Seems perfectly logical to me. @@

(Or could it be your predecessors did bugger-all to improve and maintain infrastructure, whilst lining their pockets, blaming any kind of failure on everyone else but themselves? Nice to see, after all the hoopla and promises of elections, it’s still ‘business as usual’ in India).
