‘Pro-Life’ Group: No Ebola Vaccine if Stem Cells are Used

A “pro-life” group called Children of God for Life is throwing a fit because Ebola vaccines currently being developed use cells derived from embryonic stem cells. Because it’s totally “pro-life” to let living people die of Ebola when it won’t save a single little blastocyst.

Children of God for Life announced today that several Ebola vaccines in development for use worldwide are made using aborted fetal cell lines despite the fact that moral alternatives are reported as equally effective.

Glaxo SmithKline (GSK) and NIAID are jointly developed their ChAd3 vector for delivering the Ebola virus gene using HEK-293 (human embryonic kidney) cells. Likewise, NewLink Genetics of Iowa used HEK-293 cells for their VSV-EBOV Ebola vaccine in Canada, while Johnson and Johnson/Crucell developed theirs using PER C6 cells, derived from retinal tissue of an 18 week gestation aborted baby…

“It is completely irresponsible of this Administration to put these problem vaccines on fast-track for approval and ignore the fact that a massive number of people may very well refuse them. Why not fast track a product that everyone can use in good conscience?” asked Vinnedge.

No, what’s irresponsible is shutting down stem cell research in the name of saving “babies” (the cells are actually derived from blastocysts that will never become babies) when that research could save the lives of actual people. That’s the exact opposite of “pro-life.”

These are not stem cell lines.

HEK 293 cells are human embyronic kidney. Per C6 cells embryonic retinal. They are derived from embryonic tissue though, it the names are correct.

and ignore the fact that a massive number of people may very well refuse them.

That massive number of people will probably turn out to be like the massive number of people in Washington DC to overthrow the government. Instead of a few million, it will end up being a few dozen.

Who most likely are anti-vaxxers anyway and wouldn’t use a government funded vaccine because it’s all part of the conspiracy.

R.e.: the horribly mis-named Children of God – head in the sand much?

“It is completely irresponsible of this Administration to put these problem vaccines on fast-track for approval …

If we had to go back and redo these vaccines, it might delay them by 5 or 10 years. It will delay them by a few years at the least.

If we need an Ebola vaccine, it means what we are doing now has failed. At that point, tens of thousands or millions of people are at risk.

Now just who is being irresponsible here? An administration fast tracking an urgently needed vaccine for a disease that kills 50-70% of its victims or the Children of God for Whining a Lot who are trying to delay it?

I’ve never heard of this “Children of God” group. Astroturf? Who’s funding them?

  • Artor

Yep. I can totally see those principled Xians who are freaking the fuck out over ebola refusing to take a vaccine that might have some tangential connection to a baby that never would have been born. Because paranoid Xians are SO concerned with principled stands when their own lives are at risk.

Yep, the right to life begins at conception and ends at birth.

Yep, the right to life begins at conception and ends at birth.

Actually, it begins whenever it’s convenient and ends as soon as anyone needs or should have medical attention.

  • garnetstar

Yeah, I’d like to see how long these dolts hold to their principles if there ever was an actual Ebola outbreak in which they had a chance of being exposed.

These people would be the first in line, and shoving others out of the way, to get vaccinated.

It is completely irresponsible of this Administration to put these problem vaccines on fast-track for approval and ignore the fact that a massive number of people may very well refuse them

Why? Wouldn’t the “marketplace” take care of that? Why would you trust the government to do it anyway? Look at what the government (ala Michael Loftus) did to New Orleans. Oh, the for-profit drug companies haven’t had any program to develop an Ebola vaccine because, until recently, only a few hundred people have died from it? I’m sure you can hold out until they get around to it … assuming they don’t use stem cells too as the cheapest, fastest way to develop a vaccine.

  • dhall

If they object, then they don’t have to get the vaccine if and when it becomes available and necessary. They could just become martyrs for their beliefs if it ever gets to that point.

@2, peterh: I assume you’re referring to this group: http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Children_of_God

And other vaccines, including the vast majority of those made for the flu, use chicken embryos. Think of all of those baby chickens who were killed!

    @11

No, this is the group in the article – http://www.cogforlife.org/

The other “Children of God” was a cult that has been known as The Family International since, I think, 2004.

These groups of doofi should be encouraged in their ‘principled’ stand.

They should be immediately removed from any and all vaccination lists and to round it all off nicely be removed to a protected and guarded enclave where they can all praise jeebus to their hearts content, they can even take Beck to cheer them up and Robertson to provide the entertainment.

They must be allowed to keep themselves pure and never ever be able rejoin their original communities cos otherwise the ‘bhabi jeebus will be a howlin’, you know it makes sense.

Mean while this little gift from their loving god ravishes vast areas of a continent, indiscriminately slaughtering thousands and potentially if only vaguely, threatens to bless their very own churches with its presence, but I suspect they assume they are well protected with prayers, not the CDC of course, but send money just in case… so no panic on the Titanic then!

If they’re against using stem cells then let’s drop ebola in their sacramental wine. Perhaps we can either wipe them out or turn them into hypocrites–but either way–free thinkers win!
