Beck Pushes Cahn’s ‘Shemitah’ Bullshit

The Worldnetdaily has been relentlessly pimping Jonathan Cahn’s new book about Biblical prophecy and the “shemitah” year and how it all means Something Very Very Important for America. Now Glenn Beck has joined in the fun, pushing this nonsense even more.

The Shemittah is a Sabbath year on the Jewish calendar during which fields are to be left fallow, no agriculture is to take place, and debts are to be forgiven. It began last month and, according to Cahn’s new book, these requirements are going to be imposed upon America in the coming year by God whether we like it or not.

Beck is, of course, entirely convinced that this is true, telling his staff that because America made an “Abrahamic covenant with God” upon the nation’s founding, we are being held to the obligations of the Shemitah year and “it is wiping us out” because “God is warning us.”

“I don’t think it ends the way we want it to end,” Beck said. “But we’ve entered a new period. I can feel it. We’ve entered a new period. And so it begins.”

Begins? No, you’ve been pushing stupid bullshit like this for a very long time. And so it continues.

Well, there goes the deficit problem! If nothing else, the government won’t have to pay all those military-industrial corporations the billions that we owe them, right?

But we’re gonna get really hungry …

John, you’re overlooking a much larger part of the total US debt: the private portion. All of those mortgages? POOF!!! Likewise auto loans, credit cards, etc. etc. The whole “wealth inequality” problem gets a major revision.

Who knew that Beck would be pushing the greatest redistribution in Western history?

Is Beck really advocating that all debts be forgiven every seven years? All credit card debt, loans, mortgages, etc? I don’t think a capitalist society can function if debts must be cancelled every seven years.

@2: yeah, I was thinking mortgage myself. If God wants to ‘warn me’ or ‘wipe me out’ by eliminating my mortgage payment, I’m all for it.

Ignoring the fact that America did not of course make a covenant with any god why would you be held to this rule and not the ones about animal sacrifice or how to treat mildew?

jamesredekop: It gets worse. The Shmitta (Sabbath of the land) is peanuts compared to the Yovel (Jubilee), which happens every 50 years (or possibly 49, depending on how you think the Yovel and Shmitta interact). The Yovel has not only the same rules as the Shmitta, but also requires that all debts be remitted—not just personal ones— and all land return to its “original owner”, whoever that is.

There are clumsy halachic workarounds for the Shmitta (esoteric agricultural practices to meet the requirements on fields, and a deed of transfer known as a prosbul to keep debts from remission), but the Yovel is so extremely nonworkable that there’s serious doubt as to whether it was ever actually practiced.

On a more positive and less ridiculous note, the Yovel concept inspired the “Rolling Jubilee” movement a few years back, buying debt for pennies on the dollar and voiding it. So, um, yeah, I guess Glenn Beck likes the OWS economic-justice progressives now.

These Newfound Fundies™ keep going on about not being bound by the OT & its laws – except when it boosts their book sales or affording them the opportunity to tear the hair after being told OT laws cannot be placed on public property.

The Shemittah is a Sabbath year on the Jewish calendar during which fields are to be left fallow, no agriculture is to take place, and debts are to be forgiven.

If we didn’t farm any fields for a year, world food prices would sky rocket, many people would go hungry, some would die of starvation, and there would be food riots everywhere. World food reserves right now are…74 days.

Farming is high capital and low to modest profits. Farmers that didn’t pay on their loans for a year would be in huge trouble, as would their banks and the communities around them.

The Shemittah is some old and probably imaginary ritual practice that would be an incredible disaster in the modern world. It isn’t going to happen.

Beck just makes stuff up as he goes along. And can and will contradict himself from day to day.

I’m not sure why Beck is pushing some book about the Jewish calendar.

According to his own religion, the Mormons are…The Real Jews. The Mormon word for non-Mormons is gentile. According to their theology, they are The One True Religion and the religion with a Covenant With God. God and Jesus are Mormons!!!

I’m not sure how the Old Jews fit in. They call them gentiles to. I guess they must be Fake Jews or ex-Jews or something.

According to the Book of Mormon, the Mormons are descendants of Lehi, whom God led out of Jerusalem before Babylon destroyed the city to punish them for becoming decadent. Lehi’s son Nephi continued the true line of the Jews, while Lehi’s apostate son Laman was cursed with “dark skin” and his descendants became what we call the native Americans. (Lamanites who came back to the True Faith were uncursed and turned white again.)

If it began last month, how is it that the fields aren’t actually fallow and the debts haven’t actually been forgiven? Is God laying down on the job again?

And if this is occurring because of a covenant made with God at America’s founding, shouldn’t it have been happening every seven years since 1776? I seem to have missed any mention of such a thing in the history books. Okay, maybe 1970, but that’s it.

Raven (#9) – no, no. Do it. Fallow your fields. Our farmers will be rich!!!

    Shemittah? Shedittah!

  • bmiller

Of course, if it doesn’t rain this year, the fields WILL be fallow in California. Maybe the drought is the Lawd at work!

How is it that the end times which are always right now seem to get delayed until the next kook. Paul was convinced they’d already started 1900 years ago. I guess god takes his time getting around to smiting. The main thing Shemittah would accomplish is turning us all into vegans since we sure can’t let the animals eat the stores of grains, so now Beck is pushing the vegan lifestyle in addition to the end of debt – wow, what a leftie he’s become.

I’d actually like to see fundies call for the poor to be forgiven their debts.
