Black Pastors Will Go to Jail to Keep Discriminating

That group of black right-wing pastors here in Michigan are highly upset over the possibility that sexual orientation could be added to the state’s anti-discrimination laws and they held a press conference at the capitol to throw a fit over it. My friend Todd Heywood was there and has a report.

Pastors and Christian leaders gathered on the steps of the state capitol Wednesday morning to demand the state legislature refuse to amend Michigan’s civil rights act to include the LGBT community.

“The homosexual movement is an anti-freedom movement,” declared Stacy Swimp, a right wing advocate and minister in Flint and Jackson…

Pastor Tim Berlin of Warren told the crowd, inclusion of the LGBT community in the civil rights act was “a dangerous slippery slope to an unknown destination.”

Bridgeport minister R.B. Ouellette said the group did not seek “to deny anyone their rights,” adding, “Our rights are being threatened.”

Yeah, that’s the same argument made by racists in 1964 in opposition to all anti-discrimination laws.

Swimp said if the amendment is passed, Christians will disobey the law.

“We must be ready to go to jail if we resist,” he told those gathered.

At least Swimp won’t feel out of place there, since he spent time in prison for a conviction on charges of assault with intent to murder.

“a dangerous slippery slope to an unknown destination.”

Yeah, just imagine how many other minorities’ civil rights the government might protect, once they protect the right of gays and lesbians. What’s next, civil rights for Chinese? Muslims. Why, why…this might lead to everyone being treated equal!!!

Way to pull the ladder up behind you pastor.

So he’s planning to be jailed for refusing to marry same-sex couples? Or will it be for driving the gays from his church?

I’m not seeing the transcendent courage on display here.

Swimp said if the amendment is passed, Christians will disobey the law.

I forget the part of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus said “Blessed are those who will will disobey the law to deny their fellow humans equal rights.” Maybe I can find it in Lester Maddox’s Commentaries on the Bible.

@4 – I think it comes right after “If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, drone-bomb them.”

I wonder if any of the lamestream media outlets who may have reported on this non-event mentioned that Swimp is an ex-con?

    Re eric @ #5

Nah, Yeshua ben Yusef of Nazareth actually said that if anyone slaps your face, nuke ’em.

I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against “outsiders coming in.” I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every Southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty-five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. Frequently we share staff, educational and financial resources with our affiliates. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct-action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here. I am here because I have organizational ties here. I am here because of the faggots.

Well, the destination is a decent and just society. If you cannot comprehend what that would look like, well, that is what makes you an indecent person.

Well, at least he’s willing to say that he should go to jail if he breaks the law. Most of the post-Hobby Lobby crowd seems to think that they should be allowed to be assholes in the name of their religion and pay no penalty, legal or social, for it.

  • roggg

What in the fuck do they think “freedom” means? “Rights”?

  • cptdoom

And once again I imagine the hissy fit to end all hissy fits these good “Christians” would have if a gay or lesbian denied them any service whatsoever.

    .

Baboons could marry horses and have monkey rodeos. Now I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d like to see that.
