Dobson: America Becoming Sodom and Gommorah

James Dobson, the increasingly irrelevant founder of Focus on the Family and chief screecher of the Christian right, says — stop me if you’ve heard this one before — that America is becoming “depraved” and is going the way of Sodom and Gomorrah. Because of gay people, of course.

In his October 2014 newsletter, a copy of which is available online, he wrote about the Old Testament account of Abraham’s nephew, Lot, “who chose to take his family into the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.”

“The men living there had become desperately depraved, burning with lust for each other. Jehovah told Abraham that their sin was so grievous that the Lord decided to rain utter destruction upon them. Abraham pleaded with the Lord on behalf of the people, but the patriarch could not find even ten righteous men in either of the cities to justify mercy,” he wrote.

“Why have I chosen to recount this biblical story from so long ago? Because I am convinced that America and other Western nations are sliding in the same direction,” he warned. “We have not yet reached the depravity of Sodom and Gomorrah, but that appears to be where we are headed.”

Dobson added, “Judge Robert Bork, the brilliant jurist who was shamefully denied a seat on the Supreme Court, wrote a book about this danger 18 years ago. It was titled, ‘Slouching Towards Gomorrah.’ I think he had it right.”

“Many influential men and women of the judiciary are leading us toward perdition.”

Except this Biblical story is just that, a story. It’s the same thing that goes on today, when a disaster happens and the wingnuts immediately blame it on God punishing us for The Gay or abortion or removing him from schools or whatever else they were already against. And it’s no more credible just because it’s in the Bible than it is today when screamed by a street preacher.

    Not just Sodom but Sodom AND Gommorah – talk about American exceptionalism!

    Although anyone with an education in what the bible says knows that these supposed cities weren’t destroyed for gayness, rather it was hostility & unhospitality towards strangers but you can’t expect an evangelical theologian to know that.

    Bork? Of whom Ted Kennedy said, “Robert Bork’s America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens’ doors in midnight raids, schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution, writers and artists could be censored at the whim of the Government, and the doors of the Federal courts would be shut on the fingers of millions of citizens.” Yes, that would be Dobson’s Ideal America.

    The same Dobson who is unaware of the scriptural story of Sodom and Gomorrah, preferring the one he has made up in his head and whom many of his followers believe is an ordained minister. He rarely corrects them. This is also the James Dobson who believes in beating your dog into submission and men taking showers with their young sons so the boys can see who has the bigger penis (and therefore the Authority).

    I wonder if Dobson realizes that its highly unlikely that anyone other than a Christian fundamentalist like him is going to take him seriously, which means that most of the world won’t listen to him.

    Actually, I agree with Dobson. The disagreement is that he doesn’t understand the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. It’s not simply about lust and teh gay, but about the mistreatment of strangers and vulnerable people. Something that Dobson is just fine with. Of course, Lot doesn’t come out smelling like a rose, since he offers his daughters up instead.

    He really lost me by putting “Robert Bork” and “brilliant jurist” in the same sentence.

    But he’s right! As a nation we’ve become hostile to visitors and travelers. Maybe we’ve been misunderstanding Dobson, and he’s just really anti-Customs and Border Protection and in favor of strong Homeland Security reform.

    The sin of Sodom was being a GOP/Tea Partier and being like James Dobson. Not helping the poor and needy or even caring about them and doing detestable things.

    Getting past the “It was in the bible” they were just a pair of villages. If you want to do proper biblical metaphors to compare the United States with stick to Babylon! At least you could see Nebuchadnezzar’s empire on a map. (Persia works even better but for some reason the writers of that part of the Bible liked it.)

    Well, in addition to offering up his daughters to the townsfolk, he also had ‘sexual relations’ with them (although the Bible excuses him because he was drunk and the author(s) of the Bible claim that the daughters ‘wanted it’). Father of the year material to be sure. And one off God’s righteous.

    The title is also a blatant ripoff of W.B. Yeats, so Bork did not ‘get it right’ so much as ‘steal good material.’

    Old Nebby destroyed Jerusalem and sent the Hebrews into exile in Babylon. When his Babylonian Empire was overthrown by Cyrus the Great of Persia, Cyrus allowed the Hebrews to return.

    It has long bothered me. Sodom got its own activity named after it. I figure it as a consolation prize. God wipes you out, but the people, possibly contemplating the good times, name a behavior after the city. My question is; what sort of imaginative behavior is named after Gommorah?

    So there you have it; Biblical precedent for blaming the slutty girls who get drunk. So that’s ok. Perfectly moral; Lot “the righteous” did it.

    @15 My memory is that the process of turning Hebrew folklore into a written text pretty much started in the Persian period, possibly among the priests who served as puppet rulers of Jerusalem. So they would have had reasons to take a pro Persian line
