Perkins: Americans Will Never Accept Marriage Equality

I am always amused to see Christian right bigots try to convince themselves, and more importantly their followers who donate to their groups, that they’re in the majority on same-sex marriage and always will be. Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council says that Americans will never accept marriage equality.

On yesterday’s edition of “Washington Watch,” Family Research Council President Tony Perkins lamented that same-sex marriage “is being forced upon the American people,” insisting that a majority of Americans will never support marriage equality.

Perkins said that just as reproductive rights debates are still contentious because legal abortion “runs contrary to nature,” gay marriage will similarly never be “resolved” until it is banned throughout the nation.

“I don’t care what they do, how oppressive government becomes in order to force this agenda through, they will never force Americans to accept this, the majority of Americans to accept it. Won’t happen,” he said. “Some may go silent, some may be carried away but they will not resolve this issue, trust me.”

Whistling past the graveyard makes me laugh. You lost, Tony. You’ve already lost. A majority of Americans now supports marriage equality. And the longer it continues and none of those horrible results you predict actually happen, the higher that support goes. This same kind of prediction was made by segregationists in the 40s, 50s and 60s. “Segregation now, segregation forever” was the slogan. But public opinion shifted massively, just as it is on equal rights for gay people. And you’re gonna look just like them in a few years. Hell, you already do.

And the sky will never be blue! And the tide will never come back in! And the sun will never set!

All he has to do is look at Canada. Despite having a majority government, and beliefs that aren’t favourable to gay marriage, Stephen Harper has left the issue alone. He knows that bringing up the issue would not generate good PR.

@2 Man, I wish he was less conniving or more stupid.

My prediction is that in the election of 2040 the conservative candidate (still likely to be the Republican party) will be claiming that it was George Bush Jr. or Ronald Reagan who really kickstarted that whole gay marriage thing. Just like conservatives freed the slaves and marched with Martin Luther King, y’know.

He just needs someone to “unskew” the polls for him …I wonder who could do that? …

  • D. C. Sessions

He’s right, in a tautological sense: just remember to read “Americans” as “Real Americans™.”

“FACE IT LIBERALS YOUVE LOST!!! ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS GET EVERYONE TO AGREE WITH US AND GET TOGETHER AND PASS A CONSTITUTIONAL AMMENDMENT AND WEVE WON!!! PEOPLE ARE ALREADY FLOCKING TO OUR SIDE AS THEY SEE THE DAMAGE SOCALLED “GAY” SOCALLED “MARRIAGE” IS DOES TO AMERICA AND FREEDOM AND AMERICA!!!”

“Mommy, what is grampa talking about?”

“Well, honey, back when I was your age, when a girl loved a girl they couldn’t get married and raise a family.”

    [Kid’s eyes go wide]

    “Like ours?”

Damn, D.C. beat me to it.

True, everyone not on his side is not a True American™, just like every Christian who isn’t an anti-gay bigot isn’t a True Christian™.

Life is easy when you can define away your opponents as Not Real.

But reality will always kick you in the ass sooner or later.

Hell Tony, you’ve already lost among young Republicans. 61% of Millenial Republicans favor gay marriage, as do 43% of Gen X Republicans. 69% of ALL Democrats favor.

Done, and doner. It’s just a matter of time.

Instead of Baghdad Bob, we’ve got Philadelphia Perkins. Or maybe Tucson Tony. Either way, he’s very sure the gays are in retreat!

I swear I’d pay $10 to get a specific percentage estimate from him, as to how many Americans are opposed.

” … some may be carried away but they will not resolve this issue, trust me.”

Well, here’s another weasel hiding in the woodpile. A change in opinion is now translated into people getting “carried away.” Since the time when they finally “return to their senses” can be put off into the indefinite future, the claim that “Americans will never accept gay marriage” becomes unfalsifiable.

Again, I see that Mr I-Paid-Money-To-White-Supremacists Perkins complaining about “oppressive government” when he really means “government won’t oppress the people I tell it to.”

Of course, none of these fundie assclowns could read a poll to save their lives.
