Robertson: Halloween, Satan, Something Something Abortion

You can always count on Pat Robertson to string together a bunch of subjects with a single common thread. That thread, of course, is the devil, who is behind everything Robertson doesn’t like, from Halloween to abortion to homosexuality.

“Just say, ‘I am free. On this Halloween I gave a black eye to Satan,’” he told viewers while promoting a booklet he wrote called “Angels, Demons and the End Times.” (Robertson had also just responded to a CBN story about an abusive Satanist household.)

Robertson told viewers that Satan is behind not only Halloween, but also abortion rights: “The Devil has tried to destroy people, he wants to kill babies. Why do you think we’ve got such an incredible culture of death in our country? Why do you think that we’ve killed over 50 million unborn babies? Who do you think is behind all that? This isn’t just human, it is demonic. Satan wants to destroy our babies. He wants to destroy our babies just like Pharaoh sent the word to destroy the Hebrew babies, and it’s the same thing all the way through.”

Okey dokey.

    Pharaoh? Really?

When I think of Exodus, there’s only one instance that springs to mind of a massacre of people’s children. And the victims absolutely weren’t the Hebrews.

  • eric

Why do you think that we’ve killed over 50 million unborn babies?

Um…yeah the live birth rate in the US is around 4 million/year.

  • mkoormtbaalt

Robertson is on to something when he talks about a culture of death in the United States. We have a majority of this nation who believe in Jesus Christ as a personal lord and savior, a savior who could only rescue the world through his own death. The only way to salvation is through acceptance of Him and you do not receive this blessing until you die. Worse than that, those who believe in Christianity believe that basically everything we do is in preparation for the End Times, when the world will be destroyed.

  • lofgren

What does the live birth rate have to do with anything?

  • eric

@4: 50 million abortions is an absurd number. Either he got that from rectal extraction, or he’s talking total since Roe vs. Wade.

Wait, don’t the souls of those babies go directly back to Heaven? So….Satan reaps exactly NONE of their souls? If Satan’s goal is to lure/trap/trick souls into spending eternity in Hell, then this is an awful plan! Also, if they feel no pain, he does not even get the joy of seeing them suffer. Again: bad plan.

Exodus 1:22 Pharoah ordered all the sons born to the Hebrews to be drowned. The girls got to live. That’s why Moses ended up in the bulrushes. But…maybe girls don’t count in Pat’s world.

Has the devil ever succeeded in getting someone damned to Hell who would have gone to Heaven if it hadn’t been for the devil?

If so, then the devil is able to thwart the hopes and intentions of an all-powerful God who wants all to be saved. We run into all sorts of internal contradictions re the omnis, with salvation sometimes coming down to a matter of luck (“Whew, Satan was busy elsewhere, that was close!”).

If not — then what’s the bloody point?

  • Randomfactor

All those “babies” went straight to heaven, or Robertson’s god is a bigger dick than he is himself.

So why would the devil be helping them get there? Surely he can see there aren’t any blastocysts reaching the gates of Dis.

Depending on the flavor of Christianity, if those babies were un-baptized then they go straight to Limbo. That’s one of the areas that can cause fights to break out between theologians and popcorn to break out among atheists. Almost as much fun as counting angels dancing on pinheads… like Robertson.

    @ Sastra (#8)

Try adding a little predestination into the mix. Satan gets the ones that God doesn’t want and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it.

    @ eric

I assume he is talking cumulative since Roe v. Wade in 1973. That 50 million number gets tossed out all the time by the I-get-to-choose-for-everyone-elseers in my area. I asked one why the ones prior to Roe didn’t count. “What, isn’t 50 million enough for you?” is what i got back. He didn’t seem to understand that 60 million or 70 million would be better for his “argument” since shock value seemed to be his goal.

If the devil wanted to kill babies, would be need safe legal abortions to do it?

“Why do you think we’ve got such an incredible culture of death in our country?

Because 80% of our population worships a corpse on a stick is my guess.

Patty is against the culture of death in the US — That’s why he’s against the death penalty, right?

What that you say, he’s pro-death penalty?!?

    Go Figure!

    NO.

Ca. 40% of all pregnancies end in spontaneous abortions!!! (Which makes god the world’s leading abortionist.)

  • tfkreference

Not to mention that the devil doesn’t kill anyone in the bible (correction welcome). God, however…

  • lorn

Ah …. but that’s the difference … Jehovah also kills ‘babies’ … namely the first born, young or old … and he did it as a form of persuasion.

Of course even this atrocity pales besides the big event, the flood, where everyone but those few on a boat, died. If the mythology, the mythology written by God, is to be believed.

    @ 17

“Not to mention that the devil doesn’t kill anyone in the bible (correction welcome). ”

    IIRC, Job’s children.

Two possible flaws in my “correction”. First, some people argue that the bad guy in Job isn’t the devil but another divine being in heaven, or wherever the hell god lives. Second, all the kids get replaced.

  • tfkreference

I stand corrected; thank you. In addition to the qualifications that you note, RationalWiki points out that the killing was part of the bet and condoned – if not ordered – by God (I’d go to the primary source, but reading Job once is enough in a lifetime).

  • lofgren

@4: 50 million abortions is an absurd number. Either he got that from rectal extraction, or he’s talking total since Roe vs. Wade.

Doesn’t seem that absurd. Assuming a similar rate for abortions, you’d get to 50 million in twelve and a half years. We’ve had legal abortion for over 40 years at the national level. Fifty million seems kinda low.

  • Anri

If I were Pat, I’d really wanna doublecheck my source before talking about killing children in RE: biblical Egypt.

Firstborn and all that, just sayin’.

  • dugglebogey

Isn’t it scary how he uses the word “human” as a bad thing?

  • freehand

If blastocysts are unborn babies, are children ungrown adults, and my neighbor an uneducated academic?

    And Robertson an undead corpse?

    @18 lorn:

Also, according to the babble, every time pharoah decided to let the isrealites go, god ‘hardens his heart’ so pharoah changes his mind — because god made him!!
