Christian Interrupts Muslim Prayer Service at National Cathedral

The National Cathedral in Washington, DC, which is officially Episcopalian, frequently hosts interfaith events and they decided to invite some Muslims to hold a prayer service there in the interests of ecumenicalism. Predictably, the Christian right is furious about it and one of them tried to crash it and was removed from the building.

A woman who proclaimed the name of Jesus Christ during the first-ever Islamic Jumaa prayer gathering at Washington’s National Cathedral was ejected from the building on Friday.

“Jesus Christ died on that cross over there,” the unidentified woman declared as she stood in the front of the room. “He is the reason why we are to worship only Him. Jesus Christ is our lord and savior!”

A man nearby immediately approached her and attempted to reach for her arm, but she pulled away.

“We have built, and allowed you here in mosques across this country,” she continued. “Why can’t you worship in your mosque, and leave our churches alone?”

But this isn’t about “our churches,” it’s about this particular church that invited them. And you’re a rude jerk. But of course, the comments at the Christian News Network were almost universally on her side:

Glad to see at least one person in Washington DC is not ashamed to stand for Jesus in the face of Satan’s own, who had the audacity to hold a prayer to their false God in a cathedral…

Praise God for that woman who wasn’t ashamed to stand up for the Lord Jesus Christ in a place that was once a house of Christian worship before satan gained a firm foothold…

n a funny way, this Muslim did not desecrate a house of God, he was not bringing his pagan moon god Allah into a temple where the Holy Spirit dwells. The pastor, the leaders of the Church and every member in agreement are not serving God anyway, they are at best apostate and in actuality they are atheists, this is a temple dedicated to Satan. So, I guess it is appropriate that a disciple and minister of hell are coming together in a building dedicated to hell.

It was refreshing that one person said ‘get the devil out of here,’ and sad that she was not joined by the many there posing as Christians,

“It demonstrates an appreciation of one another’s prayer traditions and is a powerful symbolic gesture toward a deeper relationship between the two Abrahamic traditions.”

Abraham would spit on the idea that Islam would be associated with God. These deceived souls are trying to make a marriage between Jesus and Lucifer…

The national cathedral is a catholic church therefore governed by satan, as is the vatican and all other faiths who reject Jesus Christ. There is only one savior and His name is above all others.

It’s Episcopalian, you idiot.

Well, at least s/he’s ecumenical … s/he hates everyone not from his/her sect!

Well, at least she didn’t refer to the Raping Children Church as the Whore of Babylon. Nice to know that he/she is an equal opportunity bigot.

“Abraham would spit on the idea that Islam would be associated with God.”

But he’d be just fine with the idea that Christianity would, right? I mean, he was a “Judeo-Christian” guy, like all Jews. The good ones, I mean.

If there was any individual behind the Abraham stories, which I doubt he would probably have been very confused by all three religions that claim his blessing and probably conclude that he had far more in common with the ‘pagans’ of his time who at least understood the importance of things like a sacrificial altar and burnt offering.

    Similar story here:

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/mennonite-central-committee-concert-postponed-because-of-ideological-clash-1.2836410

Mennonite Central Committee Canada is postponing their biggest event of the year after a clash in ideological values between a group that was scheduled to perform in the show and the church that was supposed to host it.

Former prime minister Joe Clark was scheduled to speak at what was to be MCC’s 50th anniversary benefit concert, and Buffalo Gals drum group was to perform.

But officials at Immanuel Pentecostal Church were not comfortable knowing that a ceremonial smudging was to be part of the Buffalo Gals drum group performance. They said it clashed with their Christian values, and the show was cancelled.

I do think the church in this case has every right to decide what to allow in their own facility, but this is still a disappointing move. Especially considering recent events in the city of Winnipeg.

I haven’t checked yet, but I’m sure a quick search will turn up at least half a dozen stories about how this is another example of Christian Persecution in this Fallen Nation, rather than a crank having to be ejected from a religious service because she was making an ass of herself in public.

“Jesus Christ died on that cross over there,” the unidentified woman declared as she stood in the front of the room.

    1. I doubt very much it was “that cross over there.”

    2. So take down the cross. There — problem solved.

Ed Brayton: It’s Episcopalian, you idiot.

I’m sure this person would consider the Episcopalians to be run by satan as well. Along with most mainline Protestant churches.

This has happened before. Someone invited a Hindu holy man to give the opening prayer for congress. A bunch of Jerry Falwell type xians disrupted it and were hauled out.

It’s all very fundie Who do we hate!!! Everybody!!! Rah, Rah, Rah, jesus.

PS This was no suprise. fundie Xians never, ever miss a chance to demonstrate the total moral and intellectual bankruptcy of their cults.

Jul 13, 2007 – Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at a Hindu temple in Reno, Nev. … Police officers arrested them and charged them disrupting Congress, a misdemeanor. The male protester said “we are Christians and patriots” before …

    FYI.

It’s happened before. It will happen again.

    Two thoughts:

    1. What part of “National cathedral” doesn’t she understand? In a nation whose constitution prohibits any particular state religion, inviting any established faith to perform a service at its National Cathedral diminishes no other faith.

    2. (the standard role-reversal) If a Muslim had interrupted a Christian service in a mosque, imagine the outrage from fundamentalist Christians.

“We have built, and allowed you here in mosques across this country,”

You have built mosques across this country? Really? Where?

Frankly, your complaint would make a lot more sense had the federal government decided to build a national mosque and then chosen to hold an islamic service in the cathedral. But since the fed decided instead to build one multi-purpose building and make grand claims about it being non-sectarian/ecumenical, you are stuck with it actually being non-sectarian and ecumenical.

  • dingojack

Awww – if you can’t have an open forum in the ‘national cathedral’, perhaps you shouldn’t have any services at all.

I’m sure the religious right would be down with that, right*?!?

Catholic, Episcopalian, Methodist, Lutheran, same difference … they all worship the moon goddess Semiramis, right?

Only the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist churches follow the original teachings of Jesus Christ. Except for those apostates over there.

I’m sure this person would consider the Episcopalians to be run by satan as well.

Episcopalian – at least High Church – is just Catholic lite. All the religion but only 1/3 the guilt.

The pastor at my Catholic church when I was a child used to tell a funny story about attending Mass while on a vacation and not being sure if it were a Catholic or Episcopalian church – until the end of the service, when the plate was passed a second time for donations, and he knew it was Catholic.

As for this idiot, we probably shouldn’t tell her that that Pentagon has a dedicated room for Muslim prayers. That’s right, there be brown people worshiping a “false god” in the military. Be afraid, very afraid.

But since the fed decided instead to build one multi-purpose building and make grand claims about it being non-sectarian/ecumenical,

Despite its common name, the National Cathedral was built with private funds and is almost entirely privately maintained. I believe they have a federal grant for matching funds for preservation from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, but that’s the only federal money that’s ever been spent on the building.

  • whheydt

I would hazard a guess that those complaining saw “cathedral” and immediately thought “Catholic”, without knowing that Episcopalians *also* have cathedrals. They also overlooked the use of “cathedral” for any large, spectacular church, e.g. the “Crystal Cathedral” in Orange County…though that has been sold to the Catholic Church since Schuller’s church went bankrupt.

Yes, yes … the God Allah was selected from among a selection of local and tribal Gods in Mecca by Mohammed. Apparently it was nearly random and the choice made mainly on the criteria that the name sounded ‘right’. Then the idols were smashed and Allah was proclaimed the one and only. Yes, Allah was associated with the moon, and yes, Mohammed effectively raised a minor local deity to all-powerful status by making that particular selection.

Of course if you are looking for a markedly different story the Christian God you will be disappointed. The Jewish God, and so the God Jesus worshiped as a devout Jew, and so the Christian God, was originally a minor Jordanian mountain God also associated with the moon, Yahweh. This local tribal God was raised up by man to become their name for the one all-powerful God.

In both cases we see small familial/tribal Gods created by man, become local/regional deities, and then being raised up out of the pack of hundreds of other deities by man to status as all-powerful deities worthy of global influence.

Of course, the religious theorists within both Islam and Christianity have subsequently proclaimed that Allah and Yahweh (now simply called God even as the term Allah has become the word for God) are indeed the same all-powerful God. Evidently the lady involved , and a whole lot of other people, didn’t get the memo.

It’s owned by the Episcopal Church. The actual name is “Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington” which explains the nickname.
