Ohio Sheriff’s Deputies Sent Hundreds of Racist Texts

Well here’s an entirely unshocking story in light of recent events, I’m sure you’ll agree. Several deputies in the Montomgery County Sheriff’s Department in Ohio have been sending racists texts to one another for a long time, including at least one who is in the internal affairs department.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department revealed this week that five deputies were under investigation for allegedly sending racist text messages while on duty.

In a statement on Tuesday, Sheriff Phil Plummer said that two of the five deputies — Sheriff’s Capt. Thomas J. Flanders and Detective Michael J. Sollenberger — had been placed on indefinite paid administrative leave starting on Dec. 1.

According to WDTN, Flanders is in charge of the Montgomery County Jail, and Sollenberger works with the internal affairs unit and is a member of the SWAT team. The three other deputies had not been identified by name, and had not been suspended…

WKEF reported that it had obtained “hundreds of pages of text messages.” One read: “What do apples and black people have in common? They both hang from trees.”

“I hate N*ggers. That is all,” another text message said.

“Very simply put, they’re N*ggers, son,” one deputy wrote.

As I said, one of them is part of internal affairs, where his job is to investigate other officers for possible wrongdoing. Talk about the fox guarding the chicken coop. The police should never be allowed to investigate themselves, it should always be done by an independent body.

Not only was one of the guys part of Internal Affairs, he was part of the freaking SWAT team. Definitely no conflict of interest there…nope.

Probably a matter of degree. I suppose a police force should be able to handle some simple complaints itself, through their internal affairs.

A complaint like “Officer Ed cursed in front of children while rescueing their kitten from the drainage” does not merit bringing in an outside organisation. Someone should just politely tell the concerned citizen to fuck off and have a nice day. At what point a case becomes so serious that an independent body is needed to investigate I am not exactly sure. Probably when more than one officer is involved, or senior officers are involved, or any crime is committed by an officer that could result not just in suspension/termination but also a jail sentence.

The Sheriff’s department in the case Ed refers to does seem to have done the right thing by going after their own officers and making it public. Almost refreshing, unless I am missing something.

The rule here in Ontario is significant injury or death involving the police or an allegation of rape by a police officer. Note that the SIU does not require a civilian report in the cases of injury or death involving the police, an investigation is opened automatically.

Do you really think the Sheriff’s department is doing the right thing. Two senior officers are on PAID leave (read: vacation) and three others have had no sanctions whatsoever. And there are HUNDREDS of pages of these communications. They should be fired immediately and have to sue to get their jobs back. People like this should not be in positions of power.

Not 100% sure of course, but it looks like it from reading the linked article.

No. In cases like this there are procedures that must be adhered to.
