Georgia Pastor Declares ‘Santa is Satan’

I find this story highly amusing. A Georgia pastor has angered other Christians by putting up a billboard declaring that Santa is really Satan and that he’s turning your kids into atheists. Why? Because when kids find out there’s no Santa, they might think there’s no Jesus either.

Many Christians in Harlem, Georgia said that they were outraged last week after the Born Again Independent Baptist Church changed its sign to read “Santa is Satan.”

In an interview on Sunday, Pastor Edward Carothers explained to WRDW that he posted the message because “Santa Claus is robbing Christ of his glory.”

“We have come to the point where we have replaced Jesus Christ and his birthday with a fictitious character named ‘Santa’ and we have lifted him up instead of lifting up the savior,” the pastor added. “It’s amazing to me that people would get this upset over a fictitious creature.”

Carothers said that the problem with Santa was that children would grow up and learn that he wasn’t real, and then they would also question Christianity.

“They grow up believing in Santa Claus, they grow up believing in the Tooth Fairy, they grow up believing in the Easter Bunny, they grow up in some homes believing in Jesus Christ,” he said. “Well when they get older they find out the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus ain’t real. So, what about this fourth person called Jesus?”…

“As much as they’re offended by me and my little sign those three letters that were put on my sign so am I offended by Jesus Christ being denied who he is on the day we celebrate his birth,” the pastor opined. “I want them to know that we believe in Jesus and we’re going to lift up and magnify him on his birthday. It’s his birthday. It’s not Santa’s birthday.”

Well you all just go right on being terribly offended by one another. I’ll be over here laughing my ass off.

“It’s amazing to me that people would get this upset over a fictitious creature.” — the history of religion in a nutshell.

A lot of atheists make the same argument: that Santa Claus ends up being a useful device for teaching critical thinking skills. I’ve also run into the virulently anti-santa atheists who insist that the jolly old elf is “God-on-training-wheels” and encourages children to feel comfortable about believing things on faith.

Since I was raised freethinker and celebrated a mostly secular Christmas as a child, I’m more in the first camp. As it is, fundies attacking Santa just makes them look like the Grinches they are (note how in the Suess cartoon the absence of presents and food wasn’t filled with religion, but with humanist love.)

Isn’t it so cute when they ball their little fists up and start arguing whether or not Santa is real and just who he is?

Dyslexia aside, I’m glad to see that at least some of the protestants are returning to their roots.

Properly they should be against the whole Christmas thing though.

So he’s all bent out of shape because he thinks people are honoring a fictitious character that’s not the fictitious character he thinks they should be honoring.

    Got it.

Since Santa is based in part on an actual historical figure, trying to discount today’s figure as merely fictitious is simply not facing up to reality – but, then, fire-breathing preachers of all stripes don’t seem to connect with reality very well.

My guess: He won’t be watching Glenn Beck’s upcoming movie.

Not the your main mistake my dear by the shape of it…

This counts as an own goal in the War on Xmas.

Which isn’t much this year. Even I’m bored with it.

Oh well, soon enough it will be time for the War on Easter.

Well, he’s not entirely wrong. My own teenage deconversion was helped in part by realising that Santa and God weren’t different enough.

Ed, when you’re through laughing you might want to polish up a brand new Bryan Fischer Award. Looks like we have a serious contender here.

    Well, he’s not entirely wrong

Absolutely spot on, of course he is right, that is not really the salient point though, seemingly it is just that he admitted what the real problem was, now that seems unusual.

Maybe the predicament of organized xtian religion has now reached such a stench that the practitioner scammers cannot be bothered to lie about another fictitious character which eclipses their own fictitious invention.

But realizing that some folk will suddenly equate the non-existence of one make-believe character with another make-believe one is obviously the problem.

They do not like folks, especially kids, having a revelation that 2 + 2 = 4 in fact it is to be discouraged, all major religions dislike a secular education, it queers their pitch if cognitive analysis is applied to their fairy story.

One reason they are so dead keen in gaining access to schools and science classes in particular.

But usually they are more circumspect and only mumble about the crass commercialization aspect of the season, and the diminution of the supposed star of the festival, they rarely rails and bitches about Santa being an invention, (because of exactly the comparison not being helpful to their hero) that seems a new desperation and quite telling really…it also demonstrates they have no ‘faith’ in their own story being persuasive enough to convince the populace at large.

They are slowly but irrevocably losing the struggle not to slide into the tarpit of ridiculous beliefs…and they know it so the diplomatic gloves are off.

The real War on Christmas was over long ago. Coca-Cola won. Christ lost, and Jesus is now a Wal-Mart associate. Angry male fundamentalists would have forgotten about this long ago, if the tale had not been reimagined in the form a holiday special cast to bring viewers and advertisers together on the FOX network, in the seasonal spirit of camaraderie and shared values, like contempt for the poor.

Um, pastor, Church Lady called. She wants her schtick back.

At least when it was on SNL it was actually funny. No Schweddy Balls for you!

    He’s guaranteeing his Christmas bonus.

After all this publicity every member will go to church next Sunday just to share the limelight. And quite a few non-members will turn up just to see what the fuss is all about.

Bingo – biggest collection of the year!

I feel compelled to guess what the pastor wants his adherents to pledge:

“I abjure Santa and all his works!”

Definitely does save on the gift budget…..

  • dingojack

And I thought it was alliterative atheists who were the ones (supposedly) banging on about Santa/the Tooth Fairy/the Easter Bunny not being real! Guess that makes the Rev. Bell-end an atheist too then. 😉

So he’s admitting that his church can’t offer a more compelling reason to believe in Jesus than you can for the tooth fairy?

The comments from the other side are just as bad: ”We have a one week old and I don’t want when he gets bigger, Daddy is Santa really Satan and have to explain no it’s just somebody’s crazy idea.”

So would he be okay with me using this reasoning to get any billboard (especially all the religious ones) banned?

  • dingojack

“The comments from the other side are just as bad incoherent: ”We have a one week old and I don’t want when he gets bigger, Daddy is Santa really Satan and have to explain no it’s just somebody’s crazy idea.””

    FIFY.

    Santa = Starter Jesus.

A never seen man who always sees you, and who judges you for your deeds and thoughts. You only get rewards if you also have the correct thoughts and believe in his existence; otherwise Coal/Hell for you.
