Gohmert for House Speaker

Rep. Louis Gohmert is launching a mavericky bid to be the next Speaker of the House, challenging incumbent Rep. John Boehner. Consider this my unqualified and enthusiastic endorsement of Gohmert for this position. As hilarious as Boehner has often been, Gohmert would be a comedy goldmine.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) launched a long-shot campaign Sunday for speaker of the House of Representatives, in the latest episode of the conservative rebellion against current Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

House members are set to vote for their next speaker on Tuesday, with Boehner heavily favored to win. Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) said Saturday that he is willing to serve as an alternative to Boehner. In addition, Reps. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) have stated that they will oppose Boehner’s re-election…

The congressman said that if he were elected speaker, he would fight to end “amnesty” for immigrants and Obamacare. He added that he would make sure members got a voice, going so far as to imply Boehner was acting like a “dictator.”

“We will go through regular committee process so everybody, every representative from both parties, will have a chance to participate in the process and not have a dictator running things, deciding who’s the chairman, who gets what committee, what bills come to the floor,” Gohmert said.

Dear God:

If you make this happen, I’ll take back half the mean things I’ve said about you.

Amen.

“As House Speaker, I will to free the position of House Speaker of all the duties and powers of House Speaker.”

Gohmert is one of the few in Congress who actually gets up in front of the House and admits that he thinks foreign policy should largely be focused on supporting Israel, “because the LORD.” His own House of Representatives website proclaims “Most Americans believe that if we as a nation bless Israel, we will be blessed. Therefore, any enemy of Israel is an enemy of the United States. As the first nation to recognize Israel as an independent state when it was re-established in 1948, the United States has known Israel as one of its closest allies.”

Since I’m a closet atheist and a member of a denomination that doesn’t teach pre-millennialism, I try to point out nutjobs like Gohmert to these people so that they will realize they’ve been duped into accepting “popular Christianity” that their own church teaches against. So far, unfortunately, I haven’t managed to make Democrats out of anyone. I have managed to get at least that one point across to my grown sons, and they’re both at this point against our current military policy, so I’ve had a tiny bit of influence.

The chances of Crazy Louie getting enough votes to reach a second ballot (29, I read somewhere), let alone win the election, are vanishingly small. Even so, the possibility that he could accede to a high position in the succession to the Presidency is simultaneously funny and scary. As Rachel Maddow recently pointed out regarding Michelle Bachmann (in a segment Ed cited yesterday), he effect of these cuckoos[1] receiving prominence is not just to serve as a butt for laughter, but also to move the Overton Window sharply to the right. That, alas, is no laughing matter.

[1] My apologies to any readers who are birds (or clocks) for describing this person as a cuckoo.

It’s too bad the current Speaker hasn’t steadfastly refused to allow an immigration bill with enough votes to pass to come to the floor, or held seventy-eight pointless votes to repeal Obamacare.

    Only half??

Surely it’s worth at least 65%?

Personally, I want to see our new Speaker be Ted Yoho. (A pirate’s life for me!)

Who could tell under all the clown makeup Gohmert wears?

Don’t worry. Once Gohmert takes the helm you can be sure he will let it reach the floor, on account of him “not have a dictator running things” and “every representative from both parties, will have a chance to participate in the process”.

Wikipedia: “Uncertain is a city in Harrison County, Texas, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 150.”

I believe this city is in Gohmert’s congressional district.

He wants to end amnesty for Obamacare? I guess that could make sense if he really believes Obama is Kenyan.

  • LightningRose

I’m okay with it so long as, for the next 2 years, Obama and Biden are never in the same place at the same time.

  • Synfandel

Amnesty for immigrants? When did immigrating become an offense?

  • emc2

Since immigrants stopped being white Protestants. There’s been a long history of that. See: Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese Exclusion Act, and the treatment of Irish Catholics or any other non-white Protestant group.

moarscienceplz – if only he could relocate to Arizona, successfully run for the senate, before being busted having a dalliance with a ‘lady of the night’. Then we could get the headline:
