Liberty Counsel Uses MLK to Justify Discrimination

In a display of intellectual chutzpah that leaves one breathless, Liberty Counsel sent out a press release on Martin Luther King Day invoking the memory of Dr. King to justify anti-gay discrimination. In fact, it says those who refuse to serve gay people in their businesses are the heir to the legacy of King.

As we remember today the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are inspired by his courage to combat injustice that had become imbedded in our culture and our law.

Writing from a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. King said, “I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that ‘an unjust law is no law at all.’”

“Marriage as the union of one man and one woman was not created by government or religion. It is rooted in natural law,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. “Same-sex marriage is contrary to the natural created order of God Almighty. Laws deconstructing natural marriage and which compel people to affirm sinful sexual behavior or unions are unjust.”…

Today, the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is being lived out by bakers, photographers, florists, ministers, county clerks, and owners of wedding venues who have lost their businesses, been forced to pay exorbitant fines, been threatened with jail, and made to choose between the natural created order of marriage between one man and one woman and judges who side with same-sex couples.

On Planet Wingnuttia, the legacy of a man who spent his life fighting against discrimination is embodied by those who want to engage in discrimination. Up is down, black is white, war is peace. And Mat Staver is a fucking idiot.

For consistency shouldn’t that be “Mat Staver is a fucking genius”?

(I can’t believe I wrote that even as an oxymoron)

LC: …and made to choose between the natural created order of marriage between one man and one woman and judges who side with same-sex couples.

This should be struck down on the basis of ignorance of natural history (along with the other reason.)

Laws deconstructing natural marriage and which compel people to affirm sinful sexual behavior or unions are unjust

Nobody’s compelling you to affirm anything. They are compelling you to obey the frakking law. By all means scream your bigoted non-affirmation to the sky while your public accommodation serves all residents equally.

“Holy crap, that’s a real D’Souza, I don’t even know how to respond”

    Thanks, erichoug!

(erichoug @ 20 “Dinesh D’Souza IS Martin Luther King, Jr.” yesterday.)

    Laws deconstructing natural marriage….

I suppose that it is possible that a person who knows the English language can use that phrase correctly in a cogent, well-written essay; however, there is nothing in that press release that suggests the write knows what “deconstruct” means.

I’m with Liberty Council. Like them, I disobey unjust laws and refuse (no matter the penalties!) to get Gay Married.

“Same-sex marriage is contrary to the natural created order of God Almighty”

But perfectly consistent with the concept of equal protection under the Constitution, which is the only law that counts in this country.

“”…and which compel people to affirm sinful sexual behavior…”

It’s always about the buttsecks with these douchebags. They’re fucking obsessed with it.

    @wreck

Or, they’re obsessed with fucking. Works either way.

Same-sex marriage is contrary to the natural created order of God Almighty

[Insert the dozens of examples of homosexual behavior in God’s other creations.]

contrary to the natural created order of God Almighty

Yeah, and 45 years ago these same religionists were telling us that it was contrary to the natural created order of God Almighty for the “races” to intermarry … indeed, read what the Virginia judge who tried and sentenced Mildred and Richard Loving said in his decision:

Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And, but for the interference with his arrangement, there would be no cause for such marriage. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.

Funny how God’s natural created order seems to change over time.

The best part is that in no way is marriage “natural” in the sense they use it. Most animals just bang and go their seperate ways. Even humans aren’t natural monoamorists for life. Those of us who enter into a marriage contract are willfully suppressing our natural urges to seek out new partners after spending enough time to have and raise a child to an acceptably self-sufficient age for long-term benefit.

    @ ArtK #8

I don’t recall being that obsessed with fucking even when I was a hormone addled teenager. And that was my own personal fucking, not other peoples’. I don’t get the abnormal level of interest in who’s doing what to who and how in the privacy of their own bedroom (or kitchen or laundry room or wherever the mood strikes). I just figure it’s none of my fucking business and don’t understand why these twits think it should be any of theirs. Just seems really creepy.

I must admit I’m a little jaded when it comes to things like this, reading them here just about every day, but wow, this one is spectacular. My mouth was hanging open in astonishment by the end of that remarkable first sentence. Bravo.

  • weatherwax

And he’s totally clueless that immediately following “Marriage as the union of one man and one woman was not created by government or religion. It is rooted in natural law,”

is “Same-sex marriage is contrary to the natural created order of God Almighty.”

But Is suppose that goes with the “I’m not religious, I just have a close relationship with god” trope they’re always spouting.

@8. Art K : “Insert the dozens of examples of homosexual behavior in God’s other creations.”

Or insert a few choice biblical verses about King David and his lover Jonathon like, say, :

    1 Samuel 18:1

When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan become deeply attached to David, and loved him with his whole being.

    1 Samuel 18:4

Jonathan stripped himself of the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with all the clothes he was wearing, even his sword, his bow, and his belt.

    1 Samuel 20:11

Jonathan said to David, ‘Come on, let’s go out into the field.’ So they both went out into the field.

    1 Samuel 20:41

    They kissed each other.

    1 Samuel 20:42

Jonathan said to David, ‘Go in peace, for we have sworn in the name of Yahweh that Yahweh will bond you and me and your descendants and my descendants forever.’

Hmm.. it sounds to me like God is fine with equal marriage from that doesn’t it?

    See :

And the brick testaments King David & Jonathon story generally.

    WTH is natural marriage?

  • cptdoom

Laws deconstructing natural marriage and which compel people to affirm sinful sexual behavior or unions are unjust.

Wait, according to the wingnuts, isn’t “natural marriage” also supposed to be “to death we do part”? So why haven’t they raised a stink about laws requiring them to recognized remarriage after divorce? Because too many of their friends are doing it?
