Chopra Denies HIV Causes AIDS

Two of the people I hate more than almost anyone else on the planet, Deepak Chopra and Tony Robbins, had a conversation in which Chopra claimed that HIV is not the cause of AIDS. So what does cause it? Negative thoughts, apparently. Because people who think positively never get diseases, amirite?

Chopra: HIV may be a precipitating agent in a susceptible host. The material agent is never the cause of the disease. It may be the final factor in inducing the full-blown syndrome in somebody who’s already susceptible.

Robbins: But what made them susceptible?

Chopra: Their own interpretations of the whole reality they’re participating in.

Robbins: Could that be translated into their thoughts, their feelings, their beliefs, their lifestyle?

Chopra: Absolutely. . .

And yet AIDS did not exist until a few decades ago. Was there no one who had a bad “interpretation of the whole reality they’re participating in” prior to that? Seriously, fuck you Chopra, you lying fraud. And fuck you too, Tony Robbins. If negative thoughts caused AIDS, I would have caught it years ago from how much I absolutely despise both of you. My “interpretation of the whole reality” is that you are loathsome con men getting rich by fleecing stupid, desperate people.

Actually, we’re only here because diseases thought of people. True story.

I can feel my T cell count decreasing just reading the names Deepak Chopra and Tony Robbins on the same page.

    Those two ARE the disease.

“Chopra: Their own interpretations of the whole reality they’re participating in.”

Duuuuuuuude! That’s like sooooooo gnarly! Pass the bong, man.

Deepak is on my “stay the fuck away from me” list. I was just treated to 15 minutes of this guy’s blathering on a radio program on NPR.

First, I have no idea what any of his mumbo-jumbo means (cosmic consciousness, WTF?).

Second, shame on you NPR, Climate One and moderator Greg Dalton for giving this woo-meister a platform as if he’s worthy of being heard.

Yeesh, 15 minutes of that guy and I need a bath. In bleach.

Chopra: HIV may be a precipitating agent in a susceptible host. The material agent is never the cause of the disease. It may be the final factor in inducing the full-blown syndrome in somebody who’s already susceptible.

Right…HIV doesn’t “cause” cause AIDS, it’s just a “factor” or a “precipitating agent” (how is that different from a “cause” again?) for someone who is already “susceptible” in some way he doesn’t specify. Sounds like he’s trying to deny that HIV causes AIDS, while still admitting it does.

Robbins: Could that be translated into their thoughts, their feelings, their beliefs, their lifestyle?

Could that be translated into blaming gays for having the wrong thoughts, feelings and “lifestyle” like we did in the early ’80s?

If negative thoughts cause AIDS, then pretty much every human being is infected.

I’m just glad people stopped believing in smallpox.

So one has to stay positive in order to avoid being positive, being negative causes one to become positive, and being positive cannot be due to being positive.

    Deepity deep.

  • Trebuchet

The continued support of Chopra by PBS makes me very sad indeed.

  • cptdoom

So apparently all the toxic chemicals needed to treat AIDS, which have some pretty nasty side effects of their own, only produce happy, good thoughts, which is why the HIV dies. I’ll have to tell my friend who still gets nasty GI attacks from his meds that those are really just good thoughts manifesting themselves.

I had no idea. No wonder NPR lets him on air.

Just who in hell could listen to that drek for an hour? What a smarmy, condescending creep.

    So what does cause it?

    Quantum.

So now I find out what today’s pictoraltheology is all about.

And maybe happy thoughts will negate the last 40 years of diabetes.

I work with someone who is anti-vaxxer, contrail-wary. raw-food vegan, student of bible-code. He has just affirmed to me that he doesn’t believe in germ theory either. He’s also a fan of Chopra.

Fortunately I think he’s past the age to reproduce.

  • A. Noyd

How does the sick fuck explain infants with AIDS then? Do just the naturally cynical babies get it, or do they need a proxy to think and feel the wrong things for them?

I wish, Ed, you’d tell us how you REALLY feel about Chopra and Robbins.

    A Nyod @17

Because, as the good doctor says, “The cosmos arises and subsides in essential potentiality.”

Also we should remember that “The unexplainable is only possible in the flow of reality.”

Finally, and most importantly, “Each of us is the womb of dimensionless excellence.”

There, that should make everything clear.

  • marcus

Akira MacKenzie@ 20 Thank you so much for clarifying! So it is quantum reverberations in the universal field of possibilities that generates what we perceive as “reality”. Got it!

  • http://www.pixelated-reality.com Alareth

I’m sorry but that conversation cannot possibly be true. At no point in that exchange did Chopra say “quantum”

  • colnago80

Over at Jerry Coyne’s blog, he put up a post taking Chopra to task for his statements in that interview. Apparently, he responded and denied that he denied that HIV is the cause of AIDS. Boy, did the commentors ream the fuck out of him.

had3 – don’t you mean that your mind experiences subjective possibilities empowering eternal stillness to influence positive boundaries that transcend unbridled reality whenever you read about Chopped-liver? :)
