Evangelist Wants Christians to Emulate Hitler, Stalin

Burt Ferias, founder of something called Holy Fire Ministries, has a column in Charisma News calling for Christians to become extremists and follow in the footsteps of Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin by using kids to push their totalitarian agenda.

In 1933 Hitler said, “If I can separate the youth of Germany from their parents I will conquer this nation.” He started a movement called “The Brown Shirts” in which 100,000 youth stood in Berlin with their right hand raised and screaming. “Hitler, we are yours!” Imagine our youth pledging that kind of allegiance to King Jesus!

It is rumored that, around that same time period, the Communist leader Joseph Stalin made the following statement concerning youth: “If we can effectively kill the national pride and patriotism of just one generation, we will have won that country. Therefore, there must be continued propaganda abroad to undermine the loyalty of the citizens in general and the teenagers in particular. By making readily available drugs of various kinds, by giving a teenager alcohol, by praising his wildness, by strangling him with sex literature and by advertising to his and her psycho-political preparation, create the necessary attitude of chaos, idleness and worthlessness.” If demonically inspired men can affect our youth this way, imagine what divine inspiration will do!

Sin has wasted our youth. We’ve not given them something worthy to live for, and something worthy to die for. To do anything below what they were created to do will bore them. That is the reason many of our young people turn to drugs, alcohol, immorality and other sensual thrills. That is why they need to be awakened to their ultimate purpose in Jesus Christ.

In revolutionary countries youth are trained in combat and weapons. They are taught principles of Communism and the tenets of militant Islam. They give themselves wholeheartedly to the goal of world domination. Someone once said that Satan is preparing his army, but the church is entertaining her children. We need a radical departure from the standard method of training young men and women for ministry. We need a touch of wholesome extremism to launch a counterculture JESUS revolution!

Yeah, that’s not too creepy or anything.

    Sin has wasted our youth.

Thank God. That’s what youth is for.

Funny, iznit, that all the hits I came up with while searching for this quote come back to Burt Ferias and none to, y’know, Hitler.

“Imagine our youth pledging that kind of allegiance to King Jesus!”

KING Jesus? Oh, that must be what all those Christians are talking about when they say the USA was based on the Bible. You know, king, as in 3 separate branches of government.

On the bright side, at least somebody from the Christian right is finally admitting to being fascist.

KING Jesus? Oh, that must be what all those Christians are talking about when they say the USA was based on the Bible. You know, king, as in 3 separate branches of government.

That would be the Holy Trinity, and King Jesus is the executive branch.

As you might expect, Ferias’ grasp of history is suspect. The Brown Shirts wasn’t a youth organization, it was Hitler’s band of thugs used to beat up and kill those who opposed Hitler or those he didn’t like. Ferias was probably thinking of the Hitler Youth but couldn’t be bothered to check. The Stalin “quote” has been also attributed to Vladimir Lenin, Lavrentiy Beria and/or Beria’s alleged book Brain-Washing: A Synthesis of the Russian Textbook on Psychopolitics. WikiQuote doesn’t think much of it:

Odd that godless, demonic Stalin seems to think about all those things the same way as a right wing preacher. Especially the part about idleness. If there’s one thing Communism thrives on, it’s everyone being idle.

Makes more sense when you realize the quote was entirely fabricated.

So… World Youth Day (*), the Christianist boot camps, the massive concerts with Christian music, the prayer rallies, revival services, and so on just aren’t enough?

(*) Yes, I realise, too Roman Catholic, too ecumenical, not terrifyingly willing to emulate Hitler enough.

    John Pieret@6,

The quote is from Brain-Washing: A Synthesis of the Russian Textbook on Psychopolitics, which was published in 1955 by the Church of Scientology, and although attributed by them to Beria, probably written by L. Ron Hubbard (it mentions “dianetics”, which we can be pretty certain Beria would not have done). Ferias gives himself an out by saying it is “rumored” that Stalin said it. Well, so it is: Ferias just rumored it!

The only large-scale effort to indoctrinate children in the U.S. that I’m aware of is done by the religious institutions located here. Perhaps there’s some that don’t indoctrinate children, but I don’t know of any so if they exist, I’m confident they’re an outlier result.

When I use the term indoctrinate here I’m referring to religious people dishonestly referring to their beliefs as objectively true facts. And then relentlessly repeating those false* assertions in speeches, written form, songs, and rhetorical phrases across all forms of communication. E.g. on the last:

    a) John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    b) “Allah akbar!”.

*Provocative Christian assertions aren’t necessarily false because empirical evidence convincingly falsifies them, but more insidiously, because they’re framed as if they were true in spite of the lack of even compelling evidence and frequently – such assertions are also irrational.

And then there’s describing the Christian god as a savior when their own dogma instead leads to only one logical conclusion regarding his nature. The biblical god is the ultimate extortionist and not a savior since the threat comes from that same god.

Ed, I don’t read this the same way. I read it as implicitly deploring those totalitarian methods and arguing that they should be countered by lessons in the ideals of Jesus.

The end of that quote is:

Someone once said that Satan is preparing his army, but the church is entertaining her children. We need a radical departure from the standard method of training young men and women for ministry. We need a touch of wholesome extremism to launch a counterculture JESUS revolution!

Ferias advocates “wholesome extremism” to create a “counterculture” set against what he sees as the culture of unbridled sex and rampant drug use — in a word, dissipation. It’s fairly standard Christian messaging, IMO.

Do you remember who it was that called for “creative extremism”? No, not Barry Goldwater; it was Martin Luther King, Jr.

I don’t agree with Ferias’s messaging; I just don’t read it as bad in the same way you seem to.

As others have said, that Stalin quote sounds so fake that it reads like a villain’s monologue for telegraphing to the audience/reader “I AM EVIL” as written by a crap writer, and not something any real person would say.

It is not like this is a shock or completely unexpected, what is a shock and unexpected is that actually admitting that xtian ambition runs to emulating the mind and crowd control that Hitler exerted so well and that Stalin and Pol pot emulated later, in a public forum in the 21st century.

It does tend to reveal that the game is up for the evangelical sunbeam club and they know it, so gloves off and a last concerted all guns blazing, last ditch attempt and assault on society to impose their delusional theocratic fantasy is well under way.

The troops are mobilizing for the end times…brave little soldiers marching as to war as a final crusade against incredible odds what with te ghey and atheists and liberals, along with those pesky judges manning the siege engines.

The game is about over, the momentum is well past the tipping point and they are aware of slipping backwards into the tar pit of historical morons.

But what is an xtian if they cannot pretend martyrdom is their right as fully paid up members of ‘ignorant-b-uz’

But fear does that when the desperation bites the ass, and they are afraid and desperate, and their ass is being bit, of that there can be no doubt.

This is the second Huxley quote I’ve used today, I must be a fan.

“You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religion. . . . Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, quite intelligent enough.”

    @16ish, caseloweraz:

I read it as implicitly deploring those totalitarian methods and arguing that they should be countered by lessons in the ideals of Jesus.

Yes, they think Jesus is wholesome; but he’s specifically asking for “wholesome extremism“. There seems a distinct phatic resonance to Barry Goldwater’s 1964 remark:

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!

Contrariwise, the full column also disavows violence:

    @-1, Burt Ferias

The Jesus Revolution is not one that will be fought with earthly weapons of destruction or with guns, knives, bullets and bombs

Nohow, that seems an incidental codicil, which as this message is passed from listener to listener almost certainly may end up being tossed aside in the future — as an element of “moderation” to be discarded.
