Russian Patriarch Again Supports Blasphemy Laws

Patriarch Kiril, the supreme leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, is unsurprisingly criticizing the publishing of cartoons that are viewed as blasphemous by some Muslims. Kiril was the main force pushing for harsh anti-blasphemy laws in Russia, so this is expected.

“By saying no to terrorism, killings and violence we now say no to the wish of some groups of people to mock people’s religious feelings, the patriarch said after a liturgy he served in the cathedral of Christ the Savior on Sunday, which was St. Tatiana’s Day in Russia (the All-Russian Students Day) commenting on the publication of cartoons of Prophet Muhammad by the French weekly Charlie Hebdo.

The patriarch said the publication led to terrorist attacks in France, in which innocent people were killed. At the same time, he criticized attempts to justify the journalist behavior with freedom of speech.

“How could they join people who sympathize with victims of terrorism and the protection and justification of horrible blasphemy in one protest!” he said.

Patriarch Kirill said freedom ends “where human ugliness, tasteless, immorality, and destruction of the moral nature of man begins.”

The patriarch also said that “our people were not tempted by the dangerous ideas, which allege that any profanity can be committed in the name of human choice.”

Authoritarianism is quite tempting, especially to those who hold the authority. In Russia, it’s Kiril himself who would have the power to silence his enemies and it is power that he badly wants (and has already received). Just another example of religious totalitarianism.

“our people were not tempted by the dangerous ideas…

Well, obviously you’re afraid they would be, otherwise you would have no reason to support blasphemy laws.

Yes we all know about organized religion, and it still surprises the Hades out of all of us when the practitioners can project the guilt with such effortless panache complete with shiny eyes, a bushy tail and all the arrogance of utter cluelessness…the term irony really does not encroach on their world does it?

Authoritarian, who worships an authoritarian who hates criticism, hates criticism. Wonder if there is a connection.

““How could they join people who sympathize with victims of terrorism and the protection and justification of horrible blasphemy in one protest!” he said. – Patriarch Kirill.

Really easily indeed when the victims of terrorism were the same cartoonists (& their janitor and two cops guarding them) who had iconoclastically blasphemed – in fact against everyone not just the Muslims.

Patriarch Kirill said freedom ends “where human ugliness, tasteless, immorality, and destruction of the moral nature of man begins.”

No, that’s ass backwards, Patriarch Kirill. That’s where freedom begins NOT ends. Also maybe its a translation error, typo, maybe a native Russian speakers poor english but its ‘tastelessness’ not ‘tasteless’ I think y’mean.

An individuals freedom ends when it denies another human individuals freedom i.e. your freedom to swing your fist ends at my nose.

There is a lot that is “ugly, tasteless, immoral and destructive to human nature” in the world – including an awful lot in almost all organised religions incl. yours Patriach Kirill. However, the way to oppose things that you consider unethical, tasteless etc .. isn’t by blasphemy laws and restricting freedoms unnecessarily.

Putin is a gangster and Krill is his authoritarian partner in crime. The two have a deal: Krill supports Putin’s massive criminal enterprise and Putin let’s Krill have more power and prestige.

Spot on. that was what all the ‘Pussy Riot ‘ debacle was about, the judiciary played footsie with the Russian Orthodox church and Putin was the master puppeteer.

Seems he needs the religious vote to continue his tinpot dictatorship and the Russian Orthodox were only to happy to sell their charms at a price…

It became rather keystone coppish when the Church was justifiably hammered by most western news agencies for bullying young girls with draconian revenge, after all they initiated the charges, all of a sudden they started hand wringing and whining to the judiciary but it was to late. Putin was in no mood to lose face, besides the Church got what they wanted he had fulfilled his part of the bargain, but the global publicity and fall out for the Church was not as anticipated.

Still making a complete prat of themselves is not a new development when it comes to religion and Church influence. it is just they never learn, they get the red mist of righteous indignation then pretend that god wants them to smite the assumed aggressor, it is an old story and it never ends well.

And Kirill is not the most astute of bunnies…thick as a brick maybe but not the sharpest tool in the box.

Remember that image that did the rounds on t’inta’nets about a couple of years back, he is seen playing head honcho surrounded by his minions at a conference table discussing thangs ecclesiastical, and where his western made very expensive watch was visible in the first release photo, after which it was extremely quickly and mysteriously photo-shopped out and existing copies of the original were withdrawn from publication.

Maybe there are a few sites with that original photo, but most have dissipated into the ether, not much different from the RCC with regards to the modus operandi …the nut does not fall far from that tree after all.

Seems someone got embarrassed by the ostentatious display of wealth, health and fuck you paupers….got a thing or two to learn from the US TV evangelists then?

So freedom ends where religion begins? Got it.

Sounds like the deal the Tsars had with the patriarchs of their times. And now, as then, it’s a win-win for church and state, and a lose-lose for the rest of Russia.
