RBG Not ‘100% Sober’ During State of the Union

There are so many reasons to adore Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Here’s another. In an interview with CNN (along with Justice Scalia), she admitted that she was somewhat tipsy during the State of the Union speech this year, and in previous years as well.

Finally they got to the State of the Union. Earlier in the evening, Scalia had expressed his disdain for the event that he stopped attending years ago. And Ginsburg admitted, that once again, she fell asleep, “as I often do.”

“The audience for the most part is awake because they are bobbing up and down and we sit there, stone faced,” she said. “But we’re not, at least I was not 100% sober,” she said to big applause. She blamed a fine wine Justice Kennedy had brought to dinner before hand.

“I vowed this year — just sparkling water—stay away from the wine — but the dinner was so delicious it needed wine.”

My hatred for the State of the Union speech is well known. I would need to be drunk, at the very least, to attend.

I wonder how hard I would have to look to find people condemning her for not respecting the institution. And how much harder to find the same people showing contempt for it, or praising other people who did while they were tehre

Take a drink every time the President issues an empty platitude. Keep a phone handy to call 911 as soon as the alcohol poisoning sets in, about 5 minutes into the speech.

That was my first thought when I heard this story. My second was “You mean they aren’t all drunk”?

Well, good on’er for being a little bit tipsy and for admitting it. I wonder whether Mr. Boehner hasn’t ever downed some wine beforehand.

This brings to mind Thurber’s famous “If Grant Had Been Drinking at Appomattox.”

To be fair, the halftime show is generally pretty good. And, while I don’t, some people tune in just for the big ads.

are you suggesting the SOTU address is a very carefully worded marketing campaign where one side of the chamber jumps up and down, clapping their hands while balancing beach balls on their noses, while the other sits silently with their arms folded, making faces for the camera and getting their own carefully worded speeches ready to placate the uneducated masses with typically uninformed bullshit talking points before the nation returns back its normal self of watching american idol and giving platforms to genetic failings like kardashian????

I think part of the reason is that while an intellectual heavyweight, she’s a physical lightweight — just over 100 lbs according to a 2013 WaPo piece. Two glasses of wine an hour before would have her BAC circa 0.073 or so — possibly a shade higher, if it was an unusually strong vintage.

To be fair, I doubt Boehner has ever been 100% sober when he’s been on the floor of Congress.

Eh, I don’t know. There’s a difference between “understanding why someone would be drunk at the SOTU” and “applauding someone for being drunk at the SOTU.” Ginsburg looked pretty foolish to me.

  • caseloweraz

Maybe I missed something. Who admitted to being drunk at the SOTU, again?

    “A little tipsy” ≠ drunk.

And keep in mind that the Founding Fathers were tipsy about 70% of their waking hours. I’m sure John Jay wrote his share of the Federalist Papers while tipsy.

    “A little tipsy” ≠ drunk.

Justice Ginsburg’s words reportedly were that she “wasn’t one hundred percent sober”. Blowing an 0.07 is just short of the DWI threshold in most states, and definitely well into DUI “tipsy” territory.
