Graham Gives ISIS an Altar Call

Franklin Graham went on Fox News with Greta Van Susteren and delivered the usual empty criticisms of President Obama, saying the exact same thing the president said but criticizing him for not saying it. Oh, and he gave an altar call for ISIS members to have their come-to-Jesus moment.

“I’m baffled by this White House,” Graham told Van Susteren on Tuesday night. “It seems they want to try to believe a lie — that everything’s OK when it’s not OK. What they (ISIS) did was evil, it was wrong, it was a sin against God,” Graham said of the recent beheadings of 21 Coptic Christians.

Yeah, that’s pretty much exactly what Obama says too. He called ISIS a “brutal, vicious death cult that, in the name of religion, carries out unspeakable acts of barbarism.” What more does he want?

However, Graham wanted to speak directly to members of the terrorist organization and offered them a simple message: “God loves you and God is willing to forgive you, but you’ve got to be willing to confess your sin to Him and ask Him for forgiveness and by faith invite His Son Jesus Christ into your heart. If you do that, God will forgive you for what you have done and God will heal your heart and He’ll invite you to be with Him for eternity in heaven.”

Thanks Franklin, I bet that’ll do the trick. I’m sure every member of ISIS that happened to be watching Fox News while you were on immediately converted to Christianity. The good news for them is they will have to change very little about their ideology, they can go right on hating women and gay people and members of other religions.

    What more does he want?

A president who isn’t uppity, furrin, moolsin, commie, Gay, or rational. In other words, him.

  • John Pieret

If you do that, God will forgive you for what you have done and God will heal your heart and He’ll invite you to be with Him for eternity in heaven.

Yeah, but will he give them 72 virgins? Otherwise the deal is off!

  • blf

Only 72? With all the inflation in the last 1400 or so years since the original deal, I would have though that number would be considerably higher.

  • yazikus

I rather despise Graham and wish people would stop taking him seriously. His pathetic little bubble he lives in has actually led him to believe he can convert ISIS members by appealing to them on fox news. Unbelievable.

…Graham … offered them a simple message: “God loves you and God is willing to forgive you, but you’ve got to be willing to confess your sin to Him and ask Him for forgiveness and by faith invite His Son Jesus Christ into your heart. If you do that, God will forgive you for what you have done and God will heal your heart and He’ll invite you to be with Him for eternity in heaven.”

I notice he didn’t say they had to be willing to stop killing people.

    Obama…called ISIS a “brutal, vicious death cult…”

Did he call it “ISIS” or ISIL?” I’ve always heard him calling it “ISIL,” which, as fellow FTBer Kaveh Mousavi clarified, is the most accurate English translation of their name: Islamic State of Iraq and THE LEVANT. So why the fuck are you, and the rest of the MSM, still using the wrong acronym, when most of our own highest officials are using the right one?

  • http://motherwell.livejournal.com/ Raging Bee

yazikus: I’m sure he doesn’t really believe any of that, or even care enough to think about it. It’s just the routine that’s part of his career, and he’ll keep on doing it as long as it sells tickets or ad-time or whatever.

    Raging Bee,

I’ve been interested to see how different media outlets refer to it. From what I understand, the current thing they are calling themselves is IS, and earlier statements have been made as ISIS or ISIL, so they are all sort of correct. Most news outlets seem to preface it with “The self-titled” “The group calling itself” or something like that.

  • cmotdibbler

Maybe Franklin should go in person to mediate.

  • blf

A much better acronym-ish name than either ISIS or ISIL is Da`ish or Daesh, which is based on the Arabic name, and which they absolutely hate since its pronunciation is very similar to several words with meanings along the lines of “those who commit [various monstrous acts]”.

According to Kaveh, the most reliable source because he knows the language, the group called itself by a name that translates to ISIL. So either he’s wrong, or the media are wrong to say the group is “self-titled” or “calls itself” ISIS. And quite frankly, I’m inclined to trust Kaveh more than the MSM.

The “ISIS” bit probably came from geographically-challenged Westerners who had no idea what “the Levant” means, and just lazily called it “Syria” instead.

    Agreed. And also about Kaveh.

Franklin knows his audience well. When he says of the ISIS killers, “God loves you and God is willing to forgive you,” he is actually speaking directly to his selfish flock. He is reminding them that no matter what they do, as long as they keep chucking money on the collection plate, they will all get pie in the sky when they die.

  • mudpuddles

So, cut people’s heads off, burn people alive, torture and rape women and children, and god will take you into heaven if you repent and decide to love jesus.

But, live your life entirely peacefully in a same sex relationship, and you’re FUCKED.

    Christianity is so special.

ISIS does not stand for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and it is not an acronym created by people who don’t know what The Levant is. It stands for Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. The Arabic Bilad al-Sham means “the country of Syria.” “Sham” itself is related, somehow (I am not an Arabic speaker) to either “left”, “left hand” or “the land of the left hand”, because it was named by western Saudis, and facing east, the land to the left of them was Syria, the land to the right was Yemen (which apparently means, “the right”, or “the right hand”). *Note that I got this information from the web and it may be total bull*

The way I understand it is that the name ISIS is actually using outdated terminology that was very specific to one place in the Arab world, and that ISIL uses the more common name.

Now, of course, the group has chosen to ditch the last two letters of its acronym and stick with IS. I get the sense that Obama and others keep using the old name because an “Islamic State” is a more frightening idea due to its possible breadth and influence. It could exist as equally in the minds of highly fundamentalist Sunni Muslims living in the West as it does to residents of Fallujah. Due to the fact that they have declared themselves a caliphate, ALL true Muslims are obligated (by their holy text) to declare their allegiance to it, and either move there to fight the holy jihad, or try to fight their jihad where they are, in the name of IS. Notably, Boko Haram declared their allegiance. If these two groups, and more, continue to interlink, and find ways to inspire Muslims elsewhere to join them, the Islamic State could become something like a North African and Middle-Eastern analogue of the Catholic Church in Europe during the Inquisition, with all sorts of official and unofficial power in places that are not Rome. Their verve for killing heretics, apostates and infidels is certainly comparable, although the reason they do it is different. Catholic executioners were going about “saving” their victims’ souls by extracting confessions and repentances; IS is simply following Sharia law (with the added bonus of striking fear and revulsion in their enemies by demonstrating how devout they are and how far they’re willing to go to achieve their aims). Of course, there is certainly a far greater chance that the vast majority of people living in lands they wish to include in their “caliphate” will reject them and everything they stand for, than there is that IS will grow to enormous proportions, I am just exploring what “IS getting what they want” looks like.

I hypothesize that Obama is underplaying the scale of the possible threat by saying ISIL (rather than the fear-mongering we got from Bush II about al-Qaeda), while simultaneously trying to irritate IS by refusing to let them define their own nature (I doubt it’s working). But like that article from the Atlantic showed, the fact that they have land and are actually operating as a kind of modern caliphate is key to the problem. Since their land is small and restricted to Iraq and Syria, keeping their movement bottled up there while simultaneously assisting the people of those countries in shrinking IS territory seems to be the best of bad responses (especially since Syria is such a bloody mess right now).

IS could become far scarier if allowed to spread, but right now, millions are suffering under its rule, and I expect that it wouldn’t take much Western support to help the oppressed overthrow IS. Unfortunately, there will always be those who, under the guise of piety, want to impose their vision of Islam (in this case) on everyone they can reach. In nations devastated by war, it’s not hard for groups like this to form without drawing the attention of the authorities, and to grow until they are able to wage asymmetric warfare (against poorly-equipped, poorly-paid and poorly-trained national armies) successfully enough to stake out territory. A long-term solution to the problem is growing a government and a political culture which successfully provide education, health care and economic assistance to all citizens. As far as I can tell this is the only way to both create stability and ensure that everyone gets the human rights that most of us in the West enjoy. Somehow we managed to create a culture where it is hard for the majority in agreement about something to force a disagreeing minority to conform or suffer. Somehow we recognize that only individuals should have rights, and that all individuals should have the same ones. By some fluke, we lead the charmed life now (at least in relation to theocracies, true monarchies, dictatorships and oligarchies), while allying ourselves with corrupt and violent totalitarian leaders of Asian, Latin American and African countries so that we get whatever resource they have to improve our lives. And most of the time when we try to help the people living under an oppressive regime overthrow it (for selfish reasons usually) we either are not able to, or actually make things worse.

Sorry for the rambling post only tangentially related to the subject of Ed’s blog post, but I have been thinking about this for awhile and needed to put my thoughts down.

    Has no one seen Archer…?

I’m morally convinced that the intel guy who started briefing people about this group was a fan.
