Boehner Blows Kisses At a Reporter?

I‘ve been covering politics for a very long time but I’ve never seen anything quite like this. A reporter during a press conference asked a serious and perfectly reasonable question of House Speaker John Boehner about what he plans to do with a DHS funding bill. Here’s the question:

With respect to you Mr. Speaker, your answers about what you are going to do are the same as yesterday. Mitch McConnell has said exactly what he is going to do, you know exactly what you are going to get–it’s going to be a clean DHS funding bill. Are you going to put it on the floor? Are you gonna kill it? Are you going to let them vote on it? Have you even had this discussion?

Boehner’s response: He blew kisses at the reporter. Seriously. Here’s the video:

Is Boehner cracking up? This is absolutely bizarre behavior.

If a Democrat did it someone would claim it was evidence they’re working for the Illuminati.

  • Doc Bill

There was a funny moment at one of the press conferences. Boehner was stonewalling as usual and answered every question with, “The House has done its job, now we’re waiting on the Senate.” After about ten of these one reporter quipped, “Are you waiting for the Senate?” Everybody laughed as Boehner made an exit.

What an ineffectual dimwit is Boehner.

  • John Pieret

    Is Boehner cracking up?

After having spent … what? … six years trying to herd clinically insane teabaggers, could you blame him?

  • raven

Is Boehner cracking up? This is absolutely bizarre behavior.

This was probably a requirement for the job in the first place.

Doc Bill “What an ineffectual dimwit is Boehner.”

    Yeah, ineffectual as a fox!

Can you even imagine what would happen if Obama did this? Wow.

I’m baffled by the current Made Up Crisis, the defunding of the Homeland Security as part of a hostage situation with immigration rules.

    1. I’m no fan of DHS. They spend too much time reading my (boring) email and looking at my collection of Grumpy Cat pictures in the cloud.

    2. However, they do something worthwhile. Right wing/xian terrorism has been a problem in the USA for decades. There have been a few cases of Moslem terrorism as well.

    3. So since crime and terrorism in the USA are real problems, how does it make sense to defund DHS?

    4. What happens if the Tea Party/GOP defunds Homeland Security and there are one or more terrorist attacks? Say one at a shopping mall that kills 20 people or maybe Timothy McVeigh’s Zombie clone blows up a federal building somewhere.

I’m getting the impression that the Tea Party/GOP are America hating nihilists who really don’t care as long as the 1% ultra-rich and Koches get more money

    Raven @7:

What happens if the Tea Party/GOP defunds Homeland Security and there are one or more terrorist attacks?

Easy. They’ll do what they always do. Blame Obama.

  • raven

Can you even imagine what would happen if Obama did this?

    Sure. Easy.

The right wing noise machine would just say it proves Obama is a Kenyan born Moslem terrorist who is just like Hitler.

Their thoughts have worn a groove so deep they can’t have more than one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/den.wilson d.c.wilson

Even under ideal conditions, Boehner could never be an effective leader. Stuck with the job of trying to organize the tea party lunatics and morons in the House, it’s no wonder he’s cracking up. All he can do is blame Obama and the Senate democrats for his own failures. Even the normally sycophantic Beltway media is getting tired of that excuse.

  • Trebuchet

Slightly off topic, Boner’s buddy Netanyahoo made a speech this morning and said a) his visit to Congress meant no disrespect to the President or his office; and b) had no political purpose. Pants on Fire!

  • raven

What happens if the Tea Party/GOP defunds Homeland Security and there are one or more terrorist attacks?

Easy. They’ll do what they always do. Blame Obama.

    1. Undoubtedly. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are actually hoping someone flies another plane into a skyscraper. So they can blame…Obama. These are not nice people. They are hate in meat suits.

    2. The question is, can they make that claim stick? After all, they are the ones that will defund DHS and it is very public.

    3. What they are doing is playing Russian Roulette with other American’s lives. Just another example of why xianity is not a source of morality.

  • http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User:Modusoperandi Modusoperandi

What? He’s not failing! His entire job is to make sure nothing moves and to blame Obama for the gridlock. He only stumbles at the latter.

  • pocketnerd

What I’m getting from this is Boehner can’t say ANYTHING without crossing either the GOP’s plutocratic masters or their useful idiots in the Tea Party, so he decided to make a clever gesture that says “I’m not going to answer that, and I’m being cutesy about it.” (Whether the gesture was clever or cutesy I leave as an exercise to the reader.)

  • raven

OK, I see what the House Tea Party is doing.

They are taking DHS hostage. And using that to terrorize the President, the congress, and…the American people. It’s even working. I’m getting a bit nervous myself.

Will Obama give in to the terrorists? Can he even afford to?

I would just try to arrange to keep critical DHS activities functioning, perhaps based on something in the constitution about defense. And then start making public speeches about Russian Roulette, hostages, and terrorists.

And if something bad happens, he has already shown where the blame lies and warned everyone.

  • Chiroptera

raven, #9: However, they do something worthwhile.

I’ll say. The Coast Guard is now a part of Homeland Security, and in the area where I grew up, the Coast Guard’s search and rescue operations were a very big and important part of our communities.

  • moarscienceplz

Hmmm, it appears that spray-tan might cause unusual behaviors in some people. Or, maybe it’s due to repeated exposure to Republican politicians.

  • http://www.facebook.com/den.wilson d.c.wilson

    2. The question is, can they make that claim stick?

Of they course they will, because our “liberal media” will spend every Sunday morning pontificating on how things would have been better if only Obama would have “reached across the aisle” more often.

  • Michael Heath

    Ed reports:

Boehner’s response [to a set of valid questions]: He blew kisses at the reporter.

I viewed this as a narcissistic form of punting. Speaker Boehner appeared particularly pleased after his response.

  • pocketnerd

    Thus Spake ZaraRaven, #12:

    1. Undoubtedly. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are actually hoping someone flies another plane into a skyscraper. So they can blame…Obama. These are not nice people. They are hate in meat suits.

Of course. Another terror attack would be just what the RNC needs to scare the country to the right (again). 9/11 was a massive boon to the plutocratic-reactionary agenda, and I’m sure they’re carefully prepared to make the most of the “next time,” if there is one.

The ideal situation for the next election cycle, of course, would be a gay Muslim terrorist setting off a “dirty bomb,” preferably in October or late September — just long enough for the Nightly McNews to tell Americans who to blame, who to hate, and how to vote in the next election to Keep America Safe. However, my guess is by summer 2016, the current crop of Republican presidential hopefuls will be so conspicuously lackluster and out-of-touch that the Elephant Echo Chamber will be desperate for anything they can spin as a terrorist attack. (As long as it’s not another barrel-stroking white guy shooting up a place, of course.)

    2. The question is, can they make that claim stick? After all, they are the ones that will defund DHS and it is very public.

Yyyyeeeah… take a look at Facebook some time. Otherwise sane and rational people can be convinced of anything their media bubble screams at them, particularly if it’s something they’ve already got a vested interest in believing.

  • freemage

I think Boehner is trying to emulate the casual humor of Obama’s ACA reminder–you remember, the one that got Dinesh D’souza to reveal once again what a classist, racist boor he is? There’s also a .gif popular right now of Obama just looking dumbfounded at the inanity of a reporter’s question about our preparations for nuclear war with Russia. This kind of lightly humorous touch scores well with audiences, particularly younger ones tired of the Same Old Bullshit.

Thing is, much like so many other things, the Right really doesn’t ‘get’ why these things work. So he’s emulating it without actually making the connection between the absurdity of the comment and the glibness of the response. Instead, he’s using it to try and deflect a bog-standard policy question, and comes off as flippant and dismissive (which, of course, he is).

  • teawithbertrand

This whole debacle has been fascinating to watch. Apparently, the House GOP hates Latino brown people so much that they’re willing to defund the agency charged with protecting us from (among others) the Middle Eastern brown people (who they also hate, but not as much) over Obama’s efforts to make the lives of the former a little less miserable. It really borders on the surreal.

  • http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User:Modusoperandi Modusoperandi

teawithbertrand “It really borders on the surreal.”

Yes, but the surrealists crossed the border illegally and are currently picking our vegetables and trimming our hedges.

What, you mean the terrorist lip smack?

  • eric

I imagine it probably gets very tedius not-answering questions in the same way. Boehner lost patience and did something silly, but this is not much different from an athlete losing it and behaving like an idiot during an interview.

    @16:

I’ll say. The Coast Guard is now a part of Homeland Security

Also Secret Service, Citizenship and Immigration (DHS is the group that handles your visa now), Customs and Border, and FEMA. I don’t have numbers in front of me but offhand, I’d say about 80-90% of the DHS budget goes to organizations that pre-existed the department itself and that most people thought were good and necessary before 2004. They really don’t do much new, the purpose was really to try and get these pre-existing organizations to work in a coordinated fashion. I.e., get Coast Guard to coordinate border ops with land-based CBP, get immigration services and customs/border services sharing information on who is coming into the country, stuff like that.

Raven, DHS wouldn’t likely lead investigations into terrorist activity. Forget DHS agents flashing badges as they go about investigating crimes like you see on the TV, the agency most likely to be in charge of doing that is (still and always) the FBI. DHS has “badge flashers” – border agents, Goast Guard, Secret Service, and TSA. But the public is already familiar with their missions: there really aren’t any new DHS special agents roaming about the countryside fighting crime (like you might see them do on TV).

  • http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User:Modusoperandi Modusoperandi

eric, I was a “badge flasher”. DHS gave me the first bit and took it away for the second.

  • raven

I’m getting a bit nervous myself.

I should clarify this. I’m reallynot that afraid of being a casualty of a terrorist attack.

I’m afraid of the Tea Party nihilists and christofascists. And the people who elected them.

Elect Tea Party haters. They defund DHS. A terrorist attack kills some people. The right wing noise machine blames Obama. Repeat as needed.

It’s senseless. It’s evil. It is a manufactured crisis and wholly unnecesary. And the fault rests with the voters. Without them, Ted Yoho, Darrel Issa, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, and the rest of the clowns would just be loons posting nonsense on Facebook.

I’m afraid I might be living in a failing empire. It wasn’t much fun for the late Romans in the 4th century CE or the late Soviet Russians.

PS So they defund immigration and the Border Patrol. Then tons of drugs and millions of people run over our open borders. Seems like an own goal to me. Again.

  • grumpyoldfart

    Is Boehner cracking up?

His backers certainly hope so. They need a submissive idiot representing them; someone who knows how to take orders without asking questions.

  • anubisprime

About the gridlock Boehner and his band of happy clappy Uruk-hai that like to inflict uncertainty and chaos…

They do not do history do they…and they certainly do not pay heed to recent history, even if it is more accessible via collective memory.

It did not work out well for them in the last couple of years vis a vis public opinion. Well they failed abysmally to get the national ovation they expected anyways…

It is like they have ‘faith’ in a tactic that displays no intention of granting their wish.

Bit like Robbie the Bruce and that damned spider…’if at first you don’t succeed’ and all that jazz.

Thing is the spider eventually cracked it, the same result is not quite as certain for the GOP and their delaying shenanigans.

    As for chief Orc Boehner…simples…

A politician with no answers resorts to flying by the seat of his pants, in Boehner’s case not only were his pants at half mast but his tricksy repartee deserted him totally, the man ‘corpsed’, as the Thespians would say, what remaining brain cells still spluttering could conjure up was to blow a kiss to a reporter…the dingbat obviously panicked…dumb fucks do stupid things when they panic.

  • Donnie

The thing is, even if DHS does not get funded, 80% of DHS employees will still be working. The issue is that those working will not get paid for their hours worked until a budget is passed. Then, all 100% of the DHS employees will get back pay because figuring out the payroll splits would take an enormous effort in-and-off itself.

The fact that 20% of DHS employees will get a paid vacation instead of doing what they want and provide support to the 80% of DHS emergency designated employees is what pisses everyone else off. Simply for politics.

  • magistramarla

    Donnie @30,

You just said exactly what I was logging in to say. Those unpaid employees are going to be plenty pissed when they don’t see the paychecks that they need to pay their bills and feed their families. That anger might well be taken out on the flying public (myself included – I’m in Europe right now), as well as others that the DHS employees are tasked with protecting and serving. I truly dread going through those security lines if this mess isn’t resolved by the time we return to the US.

  • John Pieret

80% of DHS employees will still be working

And, of course, disgruntled agents worrying about how they will be able to pay their mortgages are just the people we want making sure bombs don’t get on planes and drug cartel murderers don’t cross the border.

  • eric

It will be an own goal, especially since CBP is the one thing in DHS that the conservatives typically want bumped up in terms of budget. They want more guns gates and guards. There may be some disagreements within the GOP over how much money to give to various parts of DHS (with the far right wanting serious budget cuts), but I think those are pretty insignificant on the whole; this debate is really over how much power the tea party types are going to have in Boehner’s Congress, what they can negotiate for, what the GOP can do in terms of negotiation with Obama, and so on. DHS just happens to be the bill they’re going to use to hash some of this out. Its the battlefield, not the prize. :)

As I remember it a few years ago Boehner mumble ‘cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs’ when asks to comment.

My conclusion was that he, at some level, understands that a whole lot of his job is Kabuki and that the finer points of his speech and behavior are largely irrelevant. People are going to fulfill their expectations and see and hear what they expect to see and hear. So he has some fun with it.
