County GOP: No Premarital Sex or Porn for Candidates

Here’s a story I find amusing. The Laurens County Republican party in South Carolina is forcing candidates to sign a pledge that they won’t have premarital sex or look at pornography. Because good luck finding a way to enforce that or know if someone is doing it.

Last Tuesday, the LCGOP unanimously adopted a resolution that would ask all candidates who want to get on the primary ballot to sign a pledge with 28 principles, because the party “does not want to associate with candidates who do not act and speak in a manner that is consistent with the SC Republican Party Platform.”

Among the principles, according to Vic MacDonald & Larry Franklin of the Clinton Chronicle, is standard fare like opposition to abortion and upholding gun rights, as well as “a compassionate and moral approach to Teen Pregnancy” and “a high regard for United States Sovereignty.”

But then they get even more specific. From the Chronicle:

You must favor, and live up to, abstinence before marriage.

You must be faithful to your spouse. Your spouse cannot be a person of the same gender, and you are not allowed to favor any government action that would allow for civil unions of people of the same sex.

You cannot now, from the moment you sign this pledge, look at pornography.

I think they should force them all to get transvaginal or anal ultrasounds too. I mean, they think that’s okay for women who want an abortion, so it’s only fair.

"You're right: I wasn't very tactful or understanding in my response."

    Evidently, they hate our freedom.

I wonder who is in charge of determining what counts as porn, and how they can do so without violating the terms of the pledge. Or is it all right to be a porn loving party member if you don’t run for office?

  • reddiaperbaby1942

Well, this should reduce the number of Republican candidates to zero, and the Democrat will be elected by default. So it’s a really good idea.

Furthermore, if the GOP candidate is found to have violated any of these principles, he or she will automatically be disqualified.

Somehow I get the feeling they didn’t properly think this through. But I like it.

This story ran in March 2012.

Yup. This is competely consistent for the party of “small government.”

The people who made up this cockamamie pledge have serious skeletons in their closet. Not even a question any more.

  • D. C. Sessions

Will they tell the public that the same principles apply to anyone considering voting for them?

Here is the SCGOP platform (30-page PDF). You’ll notice that in the table of contents, page 30 is followed by page 29.

You must be faithful to your spouse.

Well, there goes Newt Gingrich’s plan to run for a seat on the county’s legislature.

Remember, according to Jesus remarriage after divorce is adultery (unless the divorce was because of adultery itself), so candidates should not have remarried.

This is what got me kicked out of the Party. I signed the pledge, then saw myself in the mirror. The image was quite pornographic.

You must be faithful to your spouse. … You cannot now, from the moment you sign this pledge, look at pornography.

Does the pledge include some fine print saying, “… until after the election”, or are these candidates stuck on the straight and narrow path for life?

You must be faithful to your spouse.

You mean like former Governor Sanford, who was forced to resign after people found out what “Hiking the Appalachian Trail meant”. (The porn movie Appalachian Trails was a big hit in South Carolina.)

Mark Sanford wins special election for Congress – USA Today

    www. usatoday. com/…sanford…congress-election…/2140591/

May 7, 2013 – Disgraced ex-South Carolina Mark Sanford defeated Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch to win a vacant seat in the U.S. House.

Sanford went on to be elected to the US House from…South Carolina.

The hypocrisy is stunning. Fundie xians aren’t moral, they are just hypocrites.

That list of rules they have is meaningless and they all know it. All they have to do is repent. Xianity has a Get Out of Hell Free card and they use it often.

Just good old fashioned window dressing to scam the shallow electorate into thinki9ng ‘what wholesome folks these GOP chappies really are!’

So I expect the whole nonsense will be based on ‘self regulation’ cos Conservatives love that idiom…it means that they can say one load of pink and fluffy in public and get down ‘n’ dirty in private!

  • grumpyoldfart

That’s a good way to weed out the difficult candidates. Only the really submissive and easily controlled will sign the pledge. With that pledge the party leaders can be sure its candidates know how to take orders – no matter how humiliating those orders might be.

If I were an impish Democratic candidate in that state, I’d start doing ads and pushing PR to the news media stating “local Republican party trying to stem tide of GOP porn-perusing candidates”.

    News at 11.

How to tell if South Carolina purity pledge is not empty political posturing: includes abstinence from hiking the Appalachian Trail.

    Modusoperandi @11:

Evidently that happens a lot on the right. Jerry Falwell advocated that people soap up the chrome of the bathroom fixtures to avoid seeing ones own genitals and having our prurient interests piqued.
