Lively: Gay Marriage Totally Different if America Does It

As many other nations have legalized same-sex marriage with none of the horrible results that the bigots claim will happen here, they have to come up with an explanation for that. Scott Lively says it will be totally different when America does it because we’re supposed to be a Christian nation.

In a later segment, Lively warned that while other nations may have already legalized gay marriage, it will be different when America does so because “we’re the only nation established on the Bible.” As such, America will face a massive “calamity” and wholesale collapse of our national infrastructure if gay marriage ever becomes legalized throughout the country, he said.

“When the United States, in its official policy, establishes homosexual sodomy as a basis for marriage under the Constitution,” Lively warned, “that’s a whole new ballgame and I’m predicting that we’re going to see some kind of calamity and judgement is going to occur … We’re going to suffer the consequences of this and we’re going to see a rapid meltdown of the infrastructure of the country, especially anything related to the Christian infrastructure of America.”

“When they pass this, if God doesn’t intervene, they’re going to come out of the gate,” he continued, “the entire leftist block is going to declare complete victory for their entire agenda and they’re going to shift to the last part of their stage of their conquest, which is punishing dissenters. You haven’t seen anything yet.”

You know what we’re doing to do when same-sex marriage is legalized nationwide and God doesn’t destroy us? Laugh at you. A lot.

we’re going to see a rapid meltdown of the infrastructure of the country, especially anything related to the Christian infrastructure of America.

Christian churches have been building meltable roads and bridges? Who knew?

It seems to escaped his notice that England is a nation that is explicitly a Christian nation, with an Established Church (CoE of course), and with Christian Bishops ex-officio as part of the legislature and our Head of State is also Head of the Church.

In England we’ve had Civil Partnerships since 2004 (which were same-sex marriages in all but name), and same-sex marriages since March 2014.

The legislation isn’t perfect, but it’s ridiculous to suggest that England isn’t officially a Christian nation which has same-sex marriages.

““we’re the only nation established on the Bible.”

Not the Vatican? Lemme guess, Shitely hates the Catholic church for not being homophobic enough.

“establishes homosexual sodomy as a basis for marriage under the Constitution,”

Lolwhut? Pieces of shit like Shitely obsessively avoid the truth; the basis for gay marriage is gay monogamy. Gay people can already have sex.

” “the entire leftist block is going to declare complete victory for their entire agenda”

Universal health care, transgender rights, lets-not-invade-countries-for-the-fuck-of-it, progressive taxation, better schools, religious freedom for all, maybe even a universal basic income. The horrors!

“and they’re going to shift to the last part of their stage of their conquest, which is punishing dissenters”

Considering that the first part of Shitely’s “conquest” is punishing dissenters by pushing anti-LGBT anti-speech laws in Uganda and Russia, this piece of fucking shit should shut up.

Here is a list of nations where Christianity is in some way recognised as the national religion. The United States is not on that list and yet is ‘the only nation established on the Bible’ – I think someone will have to explain to me how that works.

  • Taz

    You haven’t seen anything yet.

No, Scott, we haven’t – in spite of the dire predictions you and your fellow religious fanatics constantly spew.

Scott Lively says it will be totally different when America does it because we’re supposed to be a Christian nation.

Unlike those others, we have put the Cross in the forefront of our national symbols: the flag, the Great Seal, etc.

What the fuck is the “Christian infrastructure” of this country? It certainly sounds like something that should be melted down or otherwise done away with.

  • whheydt

Somebody needs to sit him down and make him read the Treaty of Tripoli.

    Alrighty then.

    1) Our nation is not “established on the bible.” If the bible ceased to exist tomorrow morning, not one element of our government would lose relevance or credibility. You won’t find the bible quoted anywhere in official structural documents, and to the extent that you can cherry-pick laws like “don’t murder people” in both places, you can find them in a million other places as well.

    2) Homosexual sex is not the basis for gay marriage any more than heterosexual sex is the basis for straight marriage. Sex is going to occur or not occur independent of marriage; the basis is government recognition of a couple that is going to act as a unit for tax laws and various other things.

    3) Hasn’t Lively watched Last Week Tonight? John Oliver had that whole segment about how our nation’s infrastructure is on a steady decline, mainly because it’s like having to do dishes; problems keep piling up because nobody wants to put in the effort to fix them.

“Christian infrastructure” (whatever that means, do religions own roads now?) isn’t at any greater risk than any other infrastructure, and marriage isn’t going to cause a problem that already exists and has existed for decades.

I thought we were already laughing at Lively and the other bigots. A lot.

Along with Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Finland, all of which also have state churches. But of course, America is the only Christian nation in the whole world.

They just can’t keep their minds out of the gutter, can they? They’re thinking about gay sex way more than gay people.

None of those are Real Christians®.

    @9

Our nation is not “established on the bible.”

Sure it is. Remember that time when Jesus was going on about how everyone should be free to their own beliefs, and your religious beliefs/preferences shouldn’t be a basis for punishment/reward?

… Or that time when he argued in favor of the freedom of the people to disagree and criticize the rules, policies and persons of those in power?

  • puppygod

“Christian infrastructure” (whatever that means, do religions own roads now?) …

    Crossroads, obviously.

    Ok, I’ll take my coat.

  • RickR

Lemme guess, Shitely hates the Catholic church for not being homophobic enough.

Don’t be silly. He hates the Catholic church because they’re a bunch of idol-worshipping papists and the Pope is the antichrist.

  • kantalope

I pictured christian infrastructure to be pews, folding chairs, and church steps….stuff like that, So right after the supreme court makes its ruling all those folding chairs are just gonna break in half. Oh, the horrors.

Paul Durant @2: ditto Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Argentina (the Catholic Church is not the “state religion” but is singled out by the Constitution for support).

  • Markita Lynda—threadrupt

Canada has had same-sex marriage in some provinces since 2003 and nationwide since 2005. We also have the same Queen as the formal head of government and the head of the Anglican Church. Oddly enough, the only thing that has changed is that slightly more couples have married.

  • llewelly

Perhaps next time the constant, mostly Republican obstruction of infrastructure maintenance funds results in a major bridge collpase, these jerks will try to blame gay marriage.

  • shadow

In the OP, the case against the florist is listed as in Oregon. IIRC: This happened in Yakima, Washington.

  • vmanis1

Markita Lynda #20: Just a clarification. While the Queen is Canada’s head of state, and perhaps is the official head of the Anglican Church of Canada (I don’t know this), no church has any official role in Canada’s political or governmental life. Thus while a number of CofE divines (and a few non-CofE ones) have seats in the UK House of Lords, the Canadian Senate has nobody appointed from a religious position. The Anglican Church of Canada is in no way an established church, and its governance does not require passage of bills in the Parliament of Canada.

I think God just takes America more seriously than every other nation that has ever existed. That’s why we’re allowed to explode stuff whenever and wherever we want to.

  • samgardner

establishes homosexual sodomy as a basis for marriage under the Constitution,

I take it that means they’re okay with straight sodomy now? About time…
