Trump: Obama a Bad Person for Saying ISIL

Certified moron Donald Trump is very upset that President Obama usually uses the term ISIL rather than ISIS. This is apparently proof that Obama is “not a good person” even though it’s an accurate term. Like me, Right Wing Watch is reminded of Pam Geller, who used that term herself and then criticized Obama for doing it.

Donald Trump is furious that President Obama refers to the so-called Islamic State as “ISIL,” or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The last word in the group’s acronym, “al-Sham,” is roughly translated as Greater Syria, or the Levant, as Pamela Geller — the anti-Muslim blogger who used “ISIL” until Obama used the same acronym and then decided it was somehow a bad thing — helpfully explains in this map.

“The only one that says ‘ISIL’ is Obama,” Trump said. “He’s the only one. He talks about ‘ISIL,’ everyone else says ‘ISIS.’ He’s got a little reason because there’s a little part of the region — but he’s the only one. Just not a good person and perhaps — go ahead, you can hear it, if you believe it. I don’t know if he has the interest of the country, he probably does, but as I said, I think the whole group, led by the leader, led by the leader, is grossly, grossly, incompetent, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Seriously, isn’t it time for Trump to just shut the fuck up now? As the old line goes, you could eat alphabet soup and shit a more coherent position than this.

    Certified moron Donald Trump …

Oh yeah? Let’s see the certificate — the LONG FORM certificate, please!

The only one that says ‘The Art of the Deal’ is Trump. Just not a good person.

As I said in the recent comment thread on Joyner, “moron” is just too pale a word. “Certified moron” is a bit better, but still fails to capture the reality.

Actually, ISIL, ISIS, or just IS are all used to describe this batch of terrorists.

  • Larry

    Sure, Trump. Whatever.

What? It’s a perfectly coherent position. “Obama bad”.

  • Saad: Openly Feminist Gamer

Yup, Trump is a dumbass. ISIL is a better term than ISIS, because the SH in DAESH stands for Shām (which is the whole of the Levant, not just Syria).

    Shouldn’t we call them Frankenberger?

  • kantalope

As I recall ISIL was the first/earliest acronym in use and Obama would have been one of the first to get this kinda info. So the first name he heard stuck. It is like if someone is first introduced to you as Jonathon…good luck switching over to Jon at a later point.

It’s probably not going to happen, as ISIS has pretty clearly won the day against ISIL, but it would be nice to read about the Egyptian goddess and not think of irrelevant associations with murderous 21st c. fanatics. For that reason alone, I wish Obama’s usage would catch on.

  • blf

They are frequently known as daesh (especially among Arabic speakers), and some governments — such as France — use that name. The daesh (which can be spelled in several different ways) hate that name, and reportedly punish people caught using the name. (And, apparently, and I didn’t know this until I was doing some fact-checking, John Kerry has also used the name daesh.)

If Obama did call them ISIS, they would attack him for that by claiming he was downplaying the threat by implying they only have interests in Iraq and Syria and not a wider area, the Levant, which includes Israel.

This is the poisonous legacy of George Orwell. People think that endless bickering over word choices is going to save the world. A politician flubs a line in a speech – quick let’s cover it for the next week like it is part of a grand conspiracy that reaches to high heaven.

  • lorn

… “is grossly, grossly, incompetent, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

That from a guy who has a whole lot of personal and professional experience with gross incompetence.

  • brucegee1962

I don’t think Orwell would approve this kind of nit-picking. What he predicted, though, was exactly the sort of thing the Bush administration did all the time — masking the truth by pretty words, like “extraordinary rendition” to cover up government-sponsored kidnapping.

  • Synfandel

The intelligence community picks a term and uses it long before the press starts discussing a threat. I’m sure they were using “ISIL” before the press decided that “ISIS” had a better ring, and they stuck with their choice. The ‘correct’ term, of course, is in Arabic. The intelligence community was tracking “Usama bin Laden” (or “UBL”) long before “Osama bin Laden” came to the public’s attention.

k_machine @ 12 That’s kinda like hatin’ on Machiavelli because he called it as he saw it.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that way!

  • StevoR

@ ^ Lady Mondegreen : Indeed not! There’s a lot of people named Isis after the Egyptian goddess and even a petition here :

Whether Obama called them anything, everything or nothing they’d criticise him – becoz Obama!

Agreed and which is very good reason to use it. I like to call them Daesh (IS-IL/S) with the acronym broken up and in brackets to show the confusion and their own indecision in what to call themselves. I think we can also refer to them by lots of ruder and more appropriate names too! Evil fucking Jihadist shitstains for example.

  • dcsohl

Nick@7: Wait, you want to call them Frankenberger? I think that makes you a bad person since clearly Schicklgruber is the right term.

    I’m still saying reavers.
