More Lies About ‘No-Go’ Zones at NRA Convention

Last weekend was the annual convention of the NRA, which featured a predictable parade of right wing cranks and liars. One speaker claimed to have witnessed the “no-go zone” in Dearborn, Michigan first hand in a fantastic tale that is almost certainly a total lie.

Author Steve Tarani said during a presentation in Nashville on Sunday that he has witnessed the alleged “no-go zones” — areas where police cannot enter — while shadowing a friend who serves on the Detroit Metro SWAT Police on a drive in Dearborn, MI. He described pulling up to one of the alleged Muslim-controlled areas:

The street signs suddenly went from English to Arabic. There wasn’t a single English word on any shop or any street sign. And in fact, these little yellow signs were posted all along the edges. Jeremy said to me, ‘this is it. We don’t go past this line.’ And I said to Jeremy, ‘what do you mean? You guys are Detroit Metro. You’re the SWAT team. You can go anywhere you want. What if you get a call over there?’ He said ‘this is it, it’s hazardous for our team if we go past this line.’

I have seen it with my own eyes, witnessed it in the backseat of a car and it is for real. No-go zones exist in the United States.

Dearborn, Michigan is not the only place that these settlements exist. They are spread out over the country in various cities. There’s an estimate of over 5,000 known terrorist cells in the United States. However our most persistent and significant threat, right now, to us here today this morning, is the homegrown violent extremists.

Oh, bullshit. The claim that Dearborn is a Muslim no-go zone must come as quite a shock to the 60% of that city’s residents who aren’t fucking Muslim. And if a SWAT team really avoids a city because those big bad Muslims will get them, maybe it’s time to get a new SWAT team. This is just a flat-out lie. I’ve walked down the streets of Dearborn many times. The city is full of liquor stores, for crying out loud. It isn’t any different from any other town of similar size except that it’s about 40% Muslim. So sick of this stupid fucking lie.

And that is one of the reasons I let my NRA membership elapse many years ago.

    Sure, but you’re Muslin.

The city is full of liquor stores, for crying out loud.

    Sure, but it’s halal liquor.

Then where are the pictures so the rest of us can see it with our own eyes? No pics, no proof.

  • dingojack

They should decree the only place one can renew a NRA membership is in downtown Detroit. Those ‘big brave NRA-types’ would be too terrified to even approach with 100 miles of the city-limits for fear of the ‘evull Mooslim Cooties (EMC) infecting them, and their membership would dry up in one go!

He said with tongue in cheek and trying not to laugh with his fingers crossed behind his back while looking at the homegrown violent extremists that made up his audience.

    Irony never so well demonstrated!

Modus, please don’t call Ed a Muslin. You attack the very fabric of our society when you do that.

  • Goomba

But I thought conservatives wanted “religious freedom”. What happened to conservatives wanting to protect people’s relgious right to keep people out of thier esrablishments and homes? Why is the NRA persecuting Musliums?

  • dugglebogey

Using fear to sell guns to paranoid people. There must not be any fish left in the barrels.

  • flex

I hate to correct you Dingo, but the NRA types in the suburbs of Detroit (and I live here and know a few) won’t go to downtown Detroit for different racist reasons.

It’s still not a bad idea though.

A SWAT team too scared to enter a part of their proper jurisdiction? Really? A SWAT TEAM?! That’s ridiculous even by gun-nut-fever-dream standards.

If there’s even a milligram of truth to this, it’s probably that the SWAT team have been ordered to stay out because their presence in such neighborhoods, without good cause, is just an unnecessary act of harassment. But the SWAT folks don’t want to admit they were being bigoted bullying assholes, so they spin it into a “no-go zone” story instead.

  • DaveL

And of course, these little yellow signs are visible on Google Street View, right? Right?

  • flex

And of course, these little yellow signs are visible on Google Street View, right? Right?

Oddly enough there are little yellow signs scattered all over the streets of Dearborn, and visible on Google Street View.

    They say, “Bus Stop”

    Clearly a socialist plot.

I did see some signs labeled “One Way”. We know that this is a coded reference to Allah being the only true God and Islam is the One Way to heaven! AmIright?

  • bmiller

Interestingly, though. In reading about Rio and other Brazillian cities, there are countries with neighborhoods which are police no go zones. The drug gangs there are ORGANIZED.

Exactly the kind of thing that has been looming over us since the start of the thread.

  • k_machine

5,000 terrorist cells in the US? The NRA knows the “Big Lie” technique doesn’t actually work, right?

  • observer

Like Ed, I’ve been in Dearborn many times, and I’ve never seen anything like this. I don’t recall anything that even seems like a ghetto. It seems like a very middle class suburb to me.

  • Kermit Sansoo

Enough! I don’t cotton to serious discussions being taken over by frivolous wordplay – no matter how much you clothe it in an intellectual veneer. A good yarn, on the other hand…

  • bmiller

It’s a country of 300 million people. 5,000 terrorist cells doesn’t sound “unrealistic”, especially if one includes many of the social clubs in the Deep South and local NRA chapters?

  • lofgren

Just so we’re 100% clear, the implication here is that white people need to arm themselves to shoot the Muslims that the SWAT teams are too scared to take on, right?

  • Lady Mondegreen

Enough with the chintzy puns. And stop ragging MO.

  • ffakr

    Lamest Terrorists ever.

5000 Terrorist cells in the US? I suppose we could assume there’s an average of 5 people in each.. it’s a cell after all. That’s 25,000 active Jihadist terrorists in the US right now. Could you imagine the havoc they could cause in any or every city in America?

Perhaps Tarani should give a speech about how we shouldn’t worry about Terrorists because there’s about 25000 of them in the US now and they can’t seem to manage to hold up a single 7-11.. let alone carry out a major attack. Maybe Tarani was actually trying to tell the audience that they should stop spending all their money on personal armories.. and maybe spend a few more bucks on their kids or their education.

  • StevoR

@ ^ ffakr : I don’t think Steve Tarani would be in favour of the latter somehow. It would make his crowd far too likely to start questioning his claims and authority more skeptically.

Its a pity there wasn’t a resident from the supposed “No -Go” zone in the crowd to call bullshit on it. (Wonder how the NRA would react to a few Muslim members being present and able to legally and non-violently chime in here?)

@3. scienceavenger : “Then where are the pictures so the rest of us can see it with our own eyes? No pics, no proof.” Exactly, seconded and spot on. You beat me to it – no surprise with the time difference really.

What is slightly surprising is that this Tarani clown feels -correctly – able to make such extraordinary claims without having any actual evidence to prove it and be able to get away with it. Okay, maybe only very slightly surprising given the intellectually not-so -tough crowd he’s playing to.

@8. dugglebogey : “Using fear to sell guns to paranoid people. There must not be any fish left in the barrels.”

Oh, they went through the bottoms of the barrels a long time ago and kept digging. A very long time ago. The fish that were in those barrels are now swimming in iron rich magma oceans somewhere near the Earth’s solid inner core.

Wait. What? I used to live in Dearborn. Dearborn is a separate city, with its own police department and its own SWAT team, and is not at all part of the Detroit Metropolitan Police Department’s patrol area. I think it would be odder for Detroit cops, SWAT team or not, and apparently just cruising around, to push themselves into another jurisdiction for no reason. This makes no sense at all. I think those cops were putting Tarani on and sniggering behind his back at the way it was so easy to fool him. Good times.

  • jnorris

Lady Mondegreen, if we don’t do the chintzy puns, then no one will and the terrorists win.
