Wingnut: Obamacare Just Like North Korea

I’d never heard of Rep. David Brat of Virginia before, but he apparently wants a spot in the House Stupidity Caucus, which is of course led by Louis Gohmert and Steve King now that Michele Bachmann is retired. In a radio interview, he claimed that Obamacare is just like North Korea:

Brat said that Obamacare, which Larson inaccurately referred to as “a health care system run by government,” will move America away from a free market system. He pointed to the two Koreas as an example of the dangers of such policies: “Look at every country in the world. Look at North Korea and South Korea. It’s the same culture, it’s the same people, look at a map at night, one of the countries is not lit, there’s no lights, and the bottom free-market country, all Koreans, is lit up. So you make your bet on which country you want to be, you want to go free market.”

“We have poverty on the rise because we’re moving away from free markets,” he said.

Uh, congressman…I don’t know how to break this to you, but South Korea has universal healthcare and has had for almost 40 years now. And yet somehow that hasn’t destroyed the free market and turned out all the lights. Don’t you hate it when those pesky little facts disprove your cartoonish narrative of how the world works?

You know what—time and time again we have seen that, however great free markets might be at doing some things, they suck at providing health care, education, infrastructure and amenities (utilities, highways, parks, libraries…) and other hallmarks of a civilized society.

This is the teanut who defeated Eric Canto

  • colnago80

Brat is the tea party candidate who sent former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to the showers in the Rethuglican primary.

I sure hope you mean you forgot who Dave Brat was, because for a while he was all the pundits could talk about. It’s pretty impossible to follow poltics and not have heard of him.

I suspect this guy’s knowledge of South Korea is limited to a couple episodes of MASH, and a Margaret Cho routine he accidentally caught while look for something on TV with lots of guns in it.

Dr. David Brat was a professor of economics at Randolph-Macon College

Dr. David Brat doesn’t know how to use Google or what Wikipedia is. Most grade schoolers can do better.

I’m not seeing that Randolph-Macon College is any sort of place to actually get an education here.

Really, then I guess by that logic that Northwestern, which has Holocaust denier

Arthur Butz on their faculty is no sort of place to actually get an education. And Lehigh Un., which has evolution denier Michael Behe on their faculty, is no place to actually get an education.

Judging a college by the presence of one nutcase on their faculty is rather unfair, IMHO. We might add that judging Harvard Law School on the basis that E. W. Jackson and Tom Cotton received their law degrees there isn’t entirely fair.

It’s not so much that he can’t use Google, it’s that he never thought it was necessary. Korea is a powerful economy and, therefore, it must match his ideological beliefs about economies. To him, it would be like Googling whether breathing is a good idea.

    Wikipedia:

Education in South Korea is provided by both public schools and private schools. Both types of schools receive funding from the government, although the amount that the private schools receive is less than the amount of the state schools.[3]

Higher education is a serious matter and highly valued in South Korea and its culture more generally. In 2010, the country spent 7.6% of its GDP on all levels of education – significantly more than the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) average of 6.3%

South Korea, not only has Universal Health Care but it has…free public schools!!!

In fact, the government puts a lot of money into their school systems, regarding them as critical to the success of South Korea. It is 7.6% of GDP.

Not looking too Loonytarian here at all.

Ok, I see. Dr. David Brat doesn’t like to be confused by facts. If I was him, I wouldn’t like them either.

Arthur Butz on their faculty is no sort of place to actually get an education.

At least Arthur Butz the Holocaust Denier hasn’t been elected to the US congress.

You have a point but it isn’t quite the same. Dr. David Brat is an economist who apparently doesn’t know much about…economics.

    @John Pieret:

Whether breathing is a good idea depends entirely on whether Obama has come out in favor of it.

  • raven

As we all know, Dr. David Brat’s comparison is flawed.

Obamacare is more like such dysfunctional hells as Canada, Australia, the UK, and most of Western Europe. All of which have…Universal Health Care.

Although even that stretches the point. Obamacare is a minor tweak to our mixed, mostly private health care system to get affordable health care to a few more percentage points of our population. The big socialist part is…Medicare for old people.

Brat said that Obamacare, which Larson inaccurately referred to as “a health care system run by government,” will move America away from a free market system.

Did he say this before or after denouncing the reduction in Medicare costs implemented by the ACA?

    Re raven @ #11

I don’t think that it is fair to blame the ignorance of the folks in Brat’s district on Randolph-Macon College. AFAIK, the college is a reputable institution, unlike some other Virginia “colleges’ like Liberty and Regent, which are little better then diploma mills.

His constituents will be delighted with that interview. He told them exactly what they were told they wanted to hear.
