TX Legislator Blames Gay Marriage for Baltimore Riots

And we have another congressman from Texas spouting inane and self-contradictory things. Rep. Bill Flores says that gay marriage is partly to blame for the riots in Baltimore because the breakup of families leads to poverty. And he’s too clueless to recognize that he’s making an argument for marriage equality.

“A lot of these problems are created by the breakdown of the family, which the redefinition of would only accelerate,” Perkins opined.

“You’re exactly right, Tony,” Flores agreed. “Let’s talk about poverty for instance… The single best indicator of whether or not a child is going to be in poverty or not is whether or not they were raised by a two-parent household or a single-parent household. And so the breakdown of the family has contributed to poverty.”

“You look at what’s going on in Baltimore today, you know, you see issues that are raised there,” the congressman continued. “And healthy marriages are the ones between a man and a woman because they can have a healthy family and they can raise children in the way that’s best for their future, not only socially but psychologically, economically, from a health perspective.”

“There’s just nothing like traditional marriage that does that.”

They’re right that marriage is a huge help for avoiding poverty. Two incomes are more likely to provide financial stability than one. Which is why they should let gay people get married. The children being raised by gay people — hundreds of thousands of them — will be more likely to avoid poverty if they have two parents rather than one.

It’s perfectly logical. All bad things are equal to each other, so SSM and uppity n*****rs are the same.

He’s not saying that gay marriage caused the riots. He’s saying they’ll make them worse. Urban (8wink wink*) Americans lack of Traditional Marriages is breaking down families and causing the current riots, while Gay Marriage will break break the marriages that urban Americans don’t have.

Yeah, if there is one thing that characterizes the poorer areas of the inner cities, it’s the high rate of gay marriages.

Therefore, we should force single people to marry!

Hmmm, no, that doesn’t do it. Therefore, we should forbid single people from having kids!

No, still can’t get anti-SSM out of that. Hmmm… Therefore, we should give money to single parents!

Oh gosh no, that didn’t work out at ALL the way I wanted it to. Let me keep trying…

“A lot of these problems are created by the breakdown of the family”

Which has been caused by your right-wing economics, Shitkins. That money you spent on wooing white supremacists had to come from somewhere!

“which the redefinition of would only accelerate”

Fundies like you have a far higher rate of divorce than gay (or non-religious) couples. Should we ban fundie marriage? (not serious here)

“The children being raised by gay people — hundreds of thousands of them — will be more likely to avoid poverty if they have two parents rather than one.”

Which is why the fundies can’t allow that to happen. If everybody sees that gay families are happy and healthy, how will the fundies blame everybody else for the problems created by police brutality and right-wing economics?

So the wingnuts have taught us there are two big reasons we should not allow gay marriage:

    1) Gay people can’t have children

    2) Allowng gay people to marry would result in more children being raised by gays.

    *headdesk*

The riots started on Monday, the oral arguments were on Tuesday. Darwin must have leant out his anti-fundie time machine to gay rights protestors.

If I may remind these fucking idiots a thing or two about ‘traditional marriage’:

    – in most of the last few centuries, children were frequently raised without one or the other parent due to variously: war (WWI created a lot of single moms) pandemic (the influenza pandemic created a lot of orphans) disease (chicken pox, smallpox, infection, yadda yadda many many orphans) childbirth (2% of childbirths resulted in the mother’s death prior to 1900) — the ideal of the “nuclear family” of a mom and dad and two happy bouncing babies – is a complete fabrication and only became a possible ideal in the 1950s. Even as recently as the 1800s (not counting the US Civil War) families were pieced together out of whoever was still alive.

My ancestors on my father’s side came over to the US on a “coffin ship” during the potato famines that hit Norway (it was worse for the Irish but it wasn’t great for the rest of Europe!) Half of the family that got on the boat didn’t get off alive. For many families during the influenza or WWI, more than half the family was wiped out (patterns of immunity) That was the experience for most of humanity, forever – until the 1950s. When the plagues swept Europe, families reconstituted themselves out of what was left; aunts raised nephews as if they were mothers, fosterlings were sent to be raised by uncles. Etc.

The whole idea of a neat reproductive process around a happy m/f couple and a neat little passle of kids – is complete bullshit. It always has been. And you can bet that among those historical families that reconstituted themselves, there were plenty of gays, doing thier part to raise kids that were close kin and needed parenting. The idea that gays have not always played a responsible role in family life is pernicious, wrong, and ignorant.

PS – maybe we can blame stupid fucking Texans on gay marriage, too?

  • John Pieret

maybe we can blame stupid fucking Texans on gay marriage, too?

‘Fraid not. They existed long before gay rights was a gleam in Justice Kennedy’s eye.

The single best indicator of whether or not a child is going to be in poverty or not is whether or not they were raised by a two-parent household or a single-parent household. And so the breakdown of the family has contributed to poverty.

The single best indicator that a child is “going to be in poverty” is the child being born into poverty.

If by “a child being in poverty” these chucklefucks meant, during childhood, that’s a fucking tautology. If they meant, in later life, of course they can’t acknowledge the true primary indicator. It screws up the Conservative narrative of America (land of Opportunity, work hard and you’ll be successful, etc.)

Heck, why is he only talking about all the damage gay marriage has done to Baltimore? What about Canada? Almost 10 years of gay marriage there, and now it’s nothing but rioting from coast to coast.
